[0033] Russian Revenge

Meet Larisa Korolev, daughter of a Russian artist and Sandra’s best friend besides Cloud. If you are familiar with roleplaying game systems, you can think of her as a good example of the chaotic neutral alignment.

If you aren’t living in Europe, you probably have to read the short abstract of the Wikipedia article about Russia-Ukraine gas disputes to get the joke.

  • Larisa: Argh! I’m telling you, this arrogant bitch Zoey has it in for me!
  • Sandra: I guess you have to put up with it, Larisa. Some people are just jerks.
  • Larisa: No, enough is enough! This calls for revenge! In Russian style!
  • Zoey’s father: Boy, it’s getting colder and colder in here…!

You were right: this comic is PG-rated, what with the use of “bitch.”

I hadn’t heard about this RL conflict. For a moment, I wondered if she was going to bring forth a variant of Russian roulette. Can you do that with paintball?

And now there’s a “Find your Russian beauty” ad at the right. Heh.

Of course, living in America where it was news for a while that an elderly man froze to death in Michigan because he couldn’t pay his gas bills, this takes on an entirely new dimension of creepy.

Even paintball at pointblank would kill someone, so I wouldn’t suggest Russian roulette. However, I think messing with Russians is still a dumb idea. They’re related to Vikings!

Tom Austin, paintballs retain absolutely no capacity to kill anyone, no matter what the range.
People frequently get shot from inches away in competition, usually it is associated with a move known as a bunkering maneuver where a player would run up to the opponents cover, shoot them, and then use that cover for his/herself.
With proper use of safety equipment (goggles) paintball is one of the most injury free sports out there. Things like sprained ankles are the only major things that can happen on a usual basis.

The only serious injuries related to the sport have been from faulty airtanks that were overpressurized, and those are few and isolated.

That being said, Russian Roulet in paintball is impossible do to the loading system.

And here I thought she was waging a Cold War! Because… she made it… cold….

… it was funnier in my head.

hehehe…. i didn’t get that immediately, but nice use of current events ;)
and the art is as good as ever – though i can’t help thinking some of the smaller faces could benefit from extra resolution somehow

    “boy” ….?
What does “her” dad know what we don’t? :D :D :D

(sorry, not sure what happened there, i think it’s some leftover spark from being a reformed former reader of venus envy and the like!)

….also, from deep in the memory banks, VE’s lead character’s femme pseudonym was Zoë … hmm! Though s/he was a redhead and somewhat older.

    (heh heh heh)

“Boy” as in “oh, boy” or “oh man”. Probably best defined as a general usage expletive when minors are present. Thus, you don’t have to be talking to a boy to use it.

By the way, that drawing of “evil Larisa” is great! No wonder you posted it a week in advance

Doesn’t seem much like Chaotic Neutral to me. Then again, I’ve only ever met one person that plays CN right. Everyone else just plays Neutral Evil and calls it Chaotic Neutral.

Maybe – maybe – you shouldn’t be using as many contemporary jokes in it. They’re not bad at all, but the further from the events, the more explaining it takes. And I mean not only distance, but also time. Two years later, this might not be “getable” anymore.

But I like this comics so far. Even though I know almost nothing about the other comics (except for Calvin & Hobbes) and video games referenced.

You know, I didn’t even suspect this was a contemporary event joke (not living in Europe), I figured it was more a thing about Russia’s cold winters (and, you know, how that defeats every army that’s ever invaded them.)

I think it’s even funnier looking at it that way, too.
