  • Richard: Good news, everyone! Mrs. Dean sold the forest back to Mr. Peterson with a huge discount! He made such a big profit that he doesn’t need to sell the forest anymore.
  • Sandra: Woo!
  • Woo: Woo!
  • Kevin Dean: Mom, you gotta do something about the rats in the basement.
  • Tanya Dean: Can’t trap them, raccoon will shoot me! Can’t trap them, raccoon will shoot me!

    Pinky and The Brain?

Gee, Brain, what are we going to do tonight?
The same thing we do every night, Pinky – try to take over the world!

Better phrasing would be “You’ve got to do something -about- the rats”. :3
Love it! I love to see militant nature haters have neurotic breakdowns. x3 And Shadow’s family looks so happy to have him back! <3

Hehe, when I saw the title, the first thing I thought of was Futurama, and how the new season will have the original voice cast again… Good new indeed! =)

PrairieGhost is right. It should be “Mom, you gotta do something about the rats in the basement.”

And all the animals are happy! :D I just LOVED Woo’s face when he shoots Mrs.Dean. I guess everyone else besides Mrs.Dean will have to get rid of those mice.

Mrs.Dean still looks like a witch.

Good news everyone indeed, and nice to see Miss Dean totally harmless now :p.
@John K-Yeh I’m sorry, was that bit of idiocy you said necessary or was that an attempt at you trying to sound clever?

Is no-one else getting the Simpsons reference here? “Can’t trap them, raccoon will shoot me/Can’t sleep, clown will eat me” BTW great strip definitely one of my faves

Yay, a happy ending. If Mr. Peterson were so inclined, he could consider putting a conservation easement on the forest. That would protect it permanently no matter who owned it, and the value of the easement would be tax-deductible, and he’d still own the land Not an exciting potential story arc, but a nice way to protect wildlife habitat in the real world:-).

new guy here, before this story arc, i love this comic, but this arc put me off a bit. Yes Mrs. Dean’s son was bit by accident and a false scare of rabies came up. [side note, rabies is SERIOUS bizness and i can understand her actions, but that's another topic] But in the end, she was punished far worse than was needed. That as well as losing a lot of money in selling off the land, and why did she have to do that? there is no point in that. Foiling the antagionst is admuseing and good, but mentally breaking her to the point real vermin are out of control in her basement is not funny. You can do better than this.

(just trying out some useable critisim instead of mindless praiseing)

Taxil, I agree with you… I didn’t like this arc as much as the previous ones. It looks like it got out of hand a bit too much.

Interesting. She imagined a threat where there was none, and through her actions because of that she brought a real threat on herself.
Personally I found the absurd twist of this one quite amusing. (oh, she’ll come around; she’s a tough lady!)

Had it been me, I would likely have written the story differently. For instance I might have added a few strips in between showing (if that’s the case) that this woman was beyond reasoning with, giving her alternative plans she rejected, etc.
But I’m reading someone else’s comic, so I subscribe to their point of view while I’m at it. Comics aren’t propaganda to me, they’re just a representation of someone else’s brain synapses. I like it when my own view clashes with the author’s, gives me a chance to question my own. What I see in a comic is not always what others see, either.
And on that tangent, “mindless praise” can sometimes be just “honest opinion, different from yours”.

Remember, she wanted to kill every animal in the forest over the rabies scare. Relying on tooth traps, that puts it a little far huh? Mr.North did point out that she makes Elmer Fudd look like an animal rights activist.

Mrs.Dean still looks like a witch.

It would have made for a nice reconciliation if Woo arranged for Shadow to deal with her rat invasion… But then the ending wouldn’t be funny.

[to loopy] i see your point, but it still leaves me with a bad impression in the end. the writer/artist didn’t do the homework where any possable rabies cases have to be reported to the local goverment and they have to make the effort to look into it and make sure it is real or not. (the spray can of wipped cream didn’t not help the animals case anyway) Also, some comic can become propaganda and i just don’t want this nice comic to become one.

[to MalixDexide] (looks back) SHE didn’t say kill every animal in the forest, the hunter said that. i’m the kind of guy that unless i hear it strait from her, i don’t fully buy it. to me, Mrs Dean is just acting like a full on “Mama bear” troupe in that reguard. if she was looking for the “rabid critter” that bit her son, she should have used caging traps. they need to take them alive for testing in that situation. Wouldn’t it be a big twist if Mrs. Dean didn’t put the jaw traps out but the hunter did?

[to DanialArin] that’s a nice idea. it could be funny just to poke Mrs Dean. that and doesn’t shadow have a family to feed now? that is a lot of rats and rats mean food. I don’t see any house cats around away….

    This comic isn’t funny anymore.

I take it the rodents are planning to “self control” their actions…by “moving” to Chicago.

    “You say Po-t[ae]-to. I say Po-t[ahhh]-toe…”

    @tymime:

I get the destinct impression that it’s a split hair between a funny comedy comic and one of those downright serious super hero comics. After all, the raccoons come off looking like masked avengers in a few frames, as it is.

Woo! The Animal Rights Activist crusader! He may be young. But, he’s getting to know the story of the forrest and it’s many cruelties from both Man and Animal. And, he’s ticked off about it. He WILL make a difference and set things right.

Thank you for explaining the Simpsons reference.
Now how does Futurama fit into this?

  32. Loopy says:

[Taxil] You know, I have to admit I see your point, too. This arc leaves me kind of split.
If you start off with facts at one end, you should keep on that track and not ignore other facts later on. (as opposed to comics that are crackpot all the way)
We know that the animals weren’t dangerous… But the “other side” had no way of knowing. (even if the traps were overkill) I still like the final twist, but I rather get a feeling like several strips were missing.
And, one thing that actually bugs me more is, once the scare wears off, Mrs Dean likely won’t have really changed. People who are like that are usually afraid of “nature”, so this would just add to that notion. Not that you always can change people; sometimes you just have to mark that they’ve gone too far – but again, that would’ve required more build-up to feel quite right.

[to DanialArin] I thought that would’ve been funny, actually.

Keep in mind, it’s a light-hearted comic. No need to get into that deep of psychoanalytics. There are a number of subtle hints along the arc’s progress to nudge it towards its conclusion.

Of course, you could always go the other route and take the stance that art, of any form, is supposed to provoke conversation on the subject at hand. If that’s the case, then I think the goal was fairly well met – given some of the replies here.

Search for videos about Dr. Farnsworth. The first scene in just about any episode he is in, he enters the scene with the words “Good news everyone…” — and then proceeds with unleash the bad-to-horrific news.

Yeah, we don’t need raccoons that murder humans or rats that take over our basements.

I say this should have played out until the best predator won, and it would not have been the raccoon.
