If you are not familiar with the term: “Cooties” is a (fictional) dangerous disease affecting prepubescent children. It is transmitted by any kind of body contact with other children of the opposite sex.
- Richard: Good grief, it looks like you’re beginning to rot. Pull yourself together!
- Sandra: Blorg
- Richard: It’s Cloud! He’s asking if he can come over.
- Richard: I’m sorry, but I have to decline your request. I’m afraid you might infect Sandra with cooties.
- Cloud: ???

I caught that once, it was terrible. Took years to get over it…
The consequences may differ on a case by case basis. But it’s worse than swine flu. That’s for sure.

It took me flipping years to figure out that cooties were imaginary. I thought it was the American term for headlice or something of that ilk. This was, of course, before the internet infiltrated every area of life and instant answers to any mindless curiosity became the norm – I wasn’t going to walk to the library to research ‘cooties’ because Lisa Simpson mentioned them.

I hated other kids that mentioned that term. I ALWAYS thought that was so immature. (but none of the other kids wanted to be my friends then, anyway)
And yes, the internet has provided answers to every question known to man.

@matty..not all answers to every question known to man..what about the so called “meaning to life” and dumb stuff like that? lol…..
@ shadow: Life itself has most likely no meaning considering the implications of your existence compared to the big picture of the universe. Life itself would only have meaning if the way a specific creature lives its life would somehow alter the “end state” of the universe.
However, you can give meaning to your own life. That is increasing your own amount of “joy” during lifetime (and probably that of other people). There are many ways to do this so there’s no single answer which fits all people.
Maybe I should write a comic about the topic…

@shadow: Dude, the answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, is 42. Granted, the computer which figured it out wasn’t connected to the internet, but it DID have a voice interface…

For the record several decades ago it was slang term for headlice. Over time the original meaning has been forgotten and it’s come to just be a ficticious reason for children of the opposite sex not touch each other. When I was a kid we had an old christmas book that used it the original way. Kind of like the term moron actually used to refer to specific range of intelligence, but now it’s just an insult.
Cool magical dress by the way.

@ BarGamer:
Though 42 is obviously the answer, we are still missing the question as the Golgafrinchians killed off the Earthlings with their stupidity. I don’t think we will ever be sure the significance of 42, so I think the closest thing we have to go on is what “Novil” said about making meaning in your own life.
How many different joys must you achieve? 42! See? It is a possibilty!

@Loop: Cooties actually came from a word for head lice, Kuto. Dunno what language it is, but it translates to head lice.
@Christo: Cooties is a fake disease, usually “transmitted” by touching a person of the opposite gender, or someone else who has.
Up here in Canada, we have a “cootie lock” that prevents us from transmitting/getting cooties. I never believed in cooties, so I became the “Quarantine Kid.”

oops, forgot definition in last post! a “Quarantine Kid” is someone that you transmit the cooties to, without fear of them trying to give it back to you. Of course, everyone tried to avoid me anyways. (I was reading 300+ page books by myself in a matter of hours, with words in them like “Serendiferous” and “Quarantine” when most of my peers were still trying to figure out what “To” meant.)

(facepalm) i should have said this sooner, It seems that Sandra’s dad is showing signs that he’s not gotten use to the idea that his daughter is glowing up and showing an intrest into other boys. watching his daughter looking for a boyfriend and having less need of him should be hard for him to take.

@Taxil: Though that’s much less common in single dads, as the daughter almost always comes to them for advice.

@Zaiki: not sure about that, but none the less, it appears to be the case here.
@Rocket_T_Coyote: there is. it’s called “silly string”. Give Sandra and Cloud a can of it, and any ideas of cooties goes away while fun ensues.

I think the dad is the only one in the strip who believes in “Cooties”. Sandra look really happy that Cloud will come over (although she almost killed him after he scared her to death after she watched “The Dark Night”). I love the instant fantastical dress change as well

I think the dad definately believed in cooties when he was younger – maybe its not as popular with kids nowadays as it was when I was in grade school. . . when the girls somehow transmitted the cooties onto the floor and we coldnt touch it.

Cooties= Cuties… my understanding is that girls can only give boy’s cooties by kissing them before they’ve been inoculated. but just to be sure, grabs a ink pen and draws two dots on Cloud’s hand. “circle circle knife knife now you’ve got your shot for life.”
Ok, I think the boy’s good to go.

lol@all things @me aside from novil..witch is who i agree with..the comp that said its “42″ said that thay did not “ask” a real question so it was not able to give them a real answer..seeing as all thay asked was “whats the answer to the ultimant question ect”

don’t know if you’ll ever see this, but cooties is a real life thing, originally tagged to body lice, terrible little parasites that were easily transmitted, and the most common way to transmit them among children was through direct proximity, or something the other child had handled, today we apply it to the opposite sex, but then it was tagged to individuals, and saying someone had it was extremely embarrassing for the person, or a really really huge insult.
