I too did the surprisingly brief archive trawl on what’s currently online and found it quite interesting (I’ll probably keep up for at least a few days just to find out what happens to Nin Wa) but was also left hungry for the backstory as to why these characters are in such positions. Unless that’s to be revealed later and this is one of those dramatic dropping-you-in-it beginnings

I myself have not read the original series which does not seem to be online anywhere.
