[0125] Teamwork

The current story arc started with this strip: Two Pieces of Cake.

We just had to show the exploring aspect of the “exploring an abandoned factory” quest in at least one strip…

In the 2nd panel, Larisa is preventing Sandra from hitting against a steel bar with her head.

In the 4th panel, Sandra and Cloud are making sure that Larisa (a girl with pyromaniac tendencies, remember) does not see a welding apparatus.

    3rd pannel:

    Woo uses “open Lock”

    Bonus
    +10 Starting value
    +3 Dexterity bonus
    +4 Racial bonus
    +2 morale bonus
    +2 from “Nimble Fingers”
+2 due to use of masterwork thieves’ tools

    23 total

    Rolled (1d20=12)
    12 + 23 = 35 against DC30. Success! Lock opened.

    Sorry, couldn’t resist XD”’
And yes, Woo’s “hands” are threated as masterworks when used in this manner :P

I must say, I’ve loved this arc. I’ve gone back and forth on Sandra and Woo, admittedly because some of the political commentary wasn’t my cup of tea. It’s your comic of course, and you’re free to write about whatever you wish; but this particular storyline really has been great. Kudos!

Wow, they VERY narrowly averted disaster in that last panel.

When facing those little challenges in life, a multi-talented pet is a necessity.

    @Gerardo Tejada

Even if you disallow Woo’s hands to get a masterwork tools bonus on top of his racial bonus, he’d still make the roll. However, we do know that Woo has Mastery at the lockpicking skill, which should provide an additional bonus which was left off the list.

Wow! Did not see the steel bar. Thank you for explaining it Novil, I was confused at first as well but now it make perfect sense :D ! And I agree, Sandra and Cloud did the right thing for the entire city in the last panel.

I admit I had to read the comments to understand panels 2 and 4 and had a couple opinions that I hope will not offend the artists.

I feel panel 2 would be a lot clearer if the background materials were shaded gray so the girder would stand out from the background. Quite frankly, I thought it ‘was’ apart of the background. As a matter of less is more, a shadow on the floor would not be very helpful in pointing out the girder since it would almost certainly blend with Sandra’s shadow.

For panel 4, possibly having cloud trying to slightly close an ajar door would have helped understanding, but that would only add clutter and I don’t think it would do any better at explaining the panel.

Wonderful artwork as always and looking forward to the next installment of the story-plot

I like Woo lockpicking. It’s good to see he was useful for the quest after all, not just a cute companion.

I tried that with various textures, but the panel looked rather ugly with all of them.

    @DanialArin
You’re right… I totally forgot the skill mastery oô’
Well… as my defense: It was 1:00 am in the morning after a day of work :P

Oh, and I thought he could get an additional bonus for masterwork thieves’ tools as long as his nails are well-manicured ;)
But you could also see it that way:
He must either be Sandra’s familiar or a magical beast since he’s able to speak :P
So he might have a magical bonus either from this or from a permanent “Magic Fang”-spell on is nails XDD
And bodyparts improved by “Magic Fang” are threted as masterworks anyway so he gets the additional bonus :P

Ok, I should really stop now… enough rulebending ^^

PS: thx for fixing my minor typo, Novil ^^

Oh, pyromaniac tendencies. That’s kinda boring.
I was hoping the Welder’s mask had an apron and bloody butcher knife nearby as well :p
    (And/or similar serial murderer equipment)

    Freddie Crooger is *Gasps* Larisa

Yeah I can easily see Larisa as a Serial Killer probably a good one too like Hannibal Lector *Twilight Zone theme plays*

Darn it! Once again, I thought way too much.
I was so sure that panel 2 and 4 were oscure references from 70′s mystery cartoons.
Panel were the 2 hounds dogs from Clue Club intro, and panel 4 was a common reference
    from any scooby doo show.
    Man! I was so wrong!

I saw the welding mask and immediately thought of John DeFoe:

I really like the combined effect of panel 2 and panel 4: Larisa is not evil, not good… she’s chaotic.

@Someone: If we must do a D&D thing here, then I would be forced to insist that Woo is not a familiar, but instead a regular raccoon with the “Awaken” spell cast on him.

    @JeremySkunk

    *reads description of “Awaken”*
    Oh, you are right. oô’
I totally forgot that it’s effect was kind of permanent… you know?
Well, Woo sure rolled lucky by determining his Intelligence-score. Or “Awaken” was maximized.

Also: Woo Who is the druid responsible for that???? o_Ô
    *looks at Powree and Oliver*

You know I forgot about the Pyro in the room, but in my mind when I saw the 4th pannel, I thought of a refrence of “5 Days a Stranger” game by Yahtzee, Where the main villian of the group is a demon serial killer that wears a welding mask.
