[0127] The Fall

[0127] The Fall

The current story arc started with this strip: Two Pieces of Cake.

This strip was needed to advance the story and does not really stand out on its own, but I tried to make it at least a little bit amusing.

  • Larisa: Hey, where’s my…
  • Larisa: No, don’t! That’s dangerous!
  • Larisa: Dang.
  • Cloud: That’s dangerous?
  • Larisa: Yeah, r-e-a-l-l-y dangerous! This box contains the codes for the Russian nuclear missiles!
  • Cloud: Ah, I thought so.

ahahaha that was great, but what will she do now with no nasal spray?

It seems that it’s not the nasal spray that got thrown away but the pillbox.
It seems that inside there there are quite potent medication as it won’t elicit such a strong response if it was something more usual

Well, I personally have no idea what effect eating a couple of, for example, Aspirin pills (or any other weak or strong drug) would have for a raccoon. A raccoon does not weigh much more than a baby, so overdosing might happen really fast. So I’d certainly take away any sort of drug from a raccoon as fast as possible too.

That does NOT mean that those are Aspirin pills, that was just an example.

There are a number of over-the-counter medications for humans which are extremely dangerous to non-humans. Tylenol, for example, can kill a cat or a dog, even at doses which might be small enough to be ineffective for a human of the same body weight. Then again, so can raisins, or chocolate.

I’m surprised Woo is using his teeth to open the pill case. He’s seen Larisa open it, and given his talent with locks, the simple fastener that’s typically used on that kind of case should have been obvious to him.

Shame the zoom necessitated Larissa’s low-detail face in panel 4. Given her panic in 3 and her desperation in 5, that might have been quite the expression!

But raccoons are also lazy. Why bother to open a, perhaps, complex lock when the box could probably be opened by just biting into it? And raccoons LOVE to bite into things.

only problem i see with this situation is, with larisa’s glib answer, neither cloud nor sandra will be inclined to help her retrieve it. therefore, it seems she’s on her own unless she can put a more serious spin on it.

I knew that Larisa has the destruction of the world in her hands (lol jk)! . I also think she lies really well. I think if I were there, I would believe that it was nothing super important, just important, I am over thinking this of course.

Lol, woo’s look of near astonishment when larisa swipes the pill bottle; “Puny slow human BEAT clever grabby raccoonpaws!?” probly not meant that way, but it works either way;P.
For contrast, larisa’s thought proccess: “OH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!-”

Strange, potentially danderous pills? Comic like this… birth control pills. Gonna be THE big, serious story. Just a guess, but certainly a valid one. Other, slightly mature themes have already been introduced.

Or AIDS medication. I’d buy that, too. Can that be taken orally?

But not very dangerous on their own, I don’t think….

And unlessI did it, the “snap link ads” above had a thing for insulin, boys and girls, asthma attack and SINGLE PARENT. If it was me activating those links, nevermind.

To Nick/Tyrong: Birth-control pills were already said no to. (By Novil)

Taking any meds. that are not prescribed to you can be dangerous, and adding the fact that Woo is an animal increases the chances of something bad happen.

    Wow. Larisa looks quite shocked.
Interessting that she’s still ironic enough to use nuklear missiles as an excuse.
But now the others at least know about those pills even through they don’t know what kind of pills
(damn, I’m not a native speaker and have no clue how to end this sentence properly >,<' )
    - are in the box. (?)

Anyway, they might get worried now and I'm sure that's kind of the start of the next story arc, right?.
And I still wonder what Woo will tell Sandra about this.

Storm drains actually curve the space around them. So the path of a falling object will be curved towards the drain.

Ambi says: “Storm drains actually curve the space around them. So the path of a falling object will be curved towards the drain.”

If it isn’t already there, I think this should be added to TV Tropes. I mean, you never see an object dropped near a storm drain miss falling into it. On rare occasions a desperate dive-and-grab maneuver might barely manage to save the falling object just before disaster claims it, but never does the falling object fail to head straight for the storm drain if one is available.

This discussion about storm drains is funny and I think there might be material for one or two strips about them. But this time I needed a straight fall of the object right into it.

The pills could also be for something related to her need for insulin. I have had two of my diabetic friends both turn up with a heart illness related to their diabetes. Remember, she has to inject insulin, which, in my experience (I used to do some amount of healthcare) indicates a more severe case, so it is not unlikely there are other, related issues.

There are several drugs that if you do not have the illness or condition for which the drug is for, taking it is dangerous and possibly lethal. We already know she is taking one drug in that category, insulin for her diabetes. If you take a dose of insulin and you are not a diabetic, well hope you are near a hospital. There are a lot of choices for what the pills in the can were. Some of which would be very sad indeed if that is her condition.

id agree with Wu there, that was a rather strong reaction to ‘simple aspirin’, not the batting the pill case out of woo’s hand, thats reasonable, its afterwards of the exclaimation and obvious desire to retrieve it mixed with the desire not to reveal what it was… with storm drains, think on this: they exist to whisk away refuse, so reality is bent around to form a funnel leading trash to the storm drain, only thing is, to the storm drain everything that fits inside is trash, mysterious pill boxes, glasses case, heel of foot, ect…

    @Lunaroki:
Actually there are occasions when the object does not automatically make a bee-line for the storm drain. On those occasions, however, a failed attempt to catch it will inevitably steer it into the drain.

unknown to modern science, storm drains will eventually gravitate toward each other and merge into one colossal drain, strong enough to pull all matter and light into itself, destroying the universe.

My guess: some sort of neuro medication, like for ADHD. Such a condition could explain her chaotic-neutral disposition.

I hope I’m not scandalizing anybody with the suggestion, but it’s realistic. I mean, 0.02% of the population has OCD, so these are rather common, everyday things — much like her diabetes (btw, I have type 1 diabetes as well). Neuro-psych issues are really one of today’s more prejudicial problems. They stem from natural brain chemistry and just have to be worked with. They really shouldn’t be “dark secrets” as they are just facts of life.

Or was her Insulin in the nasal applicator? Either way… something important just went down the drain… and it isn’t Russian missile codes.
