Watch your language, girls!
Sorry for the stupid censoring of the swear words in this post, but the text content spider of our main ad agency does not like it when there are too many swear words on a page and the front page with the comic title and comic description gets a lot of hits. I hope you understand that I prefer to put in some #’s and not lose $40 instead. However, it’s okay to use swear words in the comment section since the comments don’t appear on the front page.
To be continued, of course. I guess it was only a matter of time until Larisa receives some sort of backlash for her “naive slutting around” as our reader ersatz_spring described it in the comment section of our last comic.
After this short, and certainly somewhat controversial, storyline about Larisa we’ll do one with Woo as the main character if you should already miss him.

I thought a word which is as complicated to pronounce as “sanctimonious” would not fit the situation, so I chose a different adjective for the English version. There is no good German translation for “hater” so I chose a different noun for the German version.
Michelle, Zoey’s best friend, is in the same grade as Larisa so she’s not really a “random chick”.

Novil- Uhm. A small comment on how you think girls (generally) only use swearwords when they think it’s true.
Maybe it’s a culture thing, but my experience is very much to the opposite. My twin sister was severely bullied at school, and basically the girls would throw the harshest words at her they could- meaning was irrelevant. So this shy girl who didn’t date got called “sl*t” and “wh*re” on a regular basis, simply because they were strong insults.
Now, it could be British culture, or even just the culture of the town we grew up in, so I’m not saying that’s how it ALWAYS is- I’m just sharing my thoughts.
Anyway, first time commenting I believe, but I always enjoy checking for updates!

So… Just making a little (possibly somewhat snide) observation here…
It seems like simple swearwords don’t get people wound up anymore… However, if it relates to how one conducts his-/her(usually her)self socially, you get dozens of comments in under 2 days.
Does this seem odd to anyone else?
Or laugh and try to embarrass Michelle publicly for misusing the word.

Don’t you mean “risqué”? (Although, you being willing to explore mature subject matter and all, maybe “risky” is a good description as well…)
She’s impressing me with her ability to consider possible implications of actions. Way too many adults can’t do that.
well i can agree with all that, but i was just trying to say that the term “slut” is missused all the time and i get a little steamed when it is. maybe i should have just said said that in the first place -_-#

Great sight-gag and I’m glad Larisa gets to be introspective occasionally.
In my experience, it’s been the girls who are jealous that one girl gets so much attention who use the derogatory terms. I think she’s just being flirty, but this just proves that words go deeper then intended many a time.
In my experience, kids tend to call things as they see them. Not that they may be true, but kids are quite frank about what they see and hear. This strip just seem pretty realistic to me in that regard.

Uh, if you’re asking if your comments affect the comic, I can give you a resounding “no,” seeing as I edited the text for this comic a week and a half ago.

We already had exactly that situation, and Cloud was the boy. Although Cloud has meanwhile changed, and enjoys being with only Sandra, the other boys still admire his previous behaviour.

What amazes me about this strip is how many people responded seemingly because of a single word.
Perhaps I could use this for extra credit in my Sociology class?

How naive were we in elementary school when a classmate first bandied about the word “whore”. One day we shouted it back and forth to one-another while riding our bicycles home. Some girl heard us, thought we were insulting her, and sent her big brothers after us.
Kinda like Cartman on South Park?

Heh, this all reminds me of the time my mother told me of the “Master Key” Theory.
It goes like this :
Basically, if you have a key that can open any lock, you have a Master Key, which is a GOOD thing. But if you have a Lock that can be opened by any key, you have a BAD lock!
Boys try to be Master Keys, and girls try to Lock out the bad ones.
Thus, if a Boy can get any girl he wants, he’s a COOL guy, who’s good with girls..
But if a girl is promiscious, she’s conjsidered a BAD girl, or a slut.
i think i would get along with Larissa, but she might bring out the pyromaniac in me that my parents have been trying to suppress. XD
This just shows how people’s words can hurt the feelings and self-esteem of others who they hardly even know outside of the school/work place. Larissa hardly deserved being called any name from anyone who doesn’t know her simply for flirtatious actions and a few pecks here and there. She’s playing the field, since she’s not an adult I think it’s perfectly acceptable (so long as she doesn’t take a leap off a cliff and start climbing into her targets bed).
When I was in school the girls were all a bit harder on eachother because they were pretty much playing the same sport on different teams. Girls like Larissa, who were pretty and confident in themselves and gained alot of attention, were quickly made out to be sluts because the other girls were playing by different rules (one guy at a time, instead of many at one time).
And FYI: Girls can be vicious with mental warfare. >.<
If anything, since I don’t think she is sleeping around with many guys, would not the correct phrase be “You’re such a tease”? I’m not too keen on slang terms and whatnot…
But “tease” would be nothing particularly derogative, and thus miss Michelle’s intention to insult her.

Lots of comments. It is the first step to becoming a slut though, I wouldn’t want a girl that has that behaviour as her natural adolescent stage ( yeah, I know we all read freud, jung and sartre, but even if it’s nothing to blame on her, she’s simply a bad catch).

Not sure you’ll reply but… I really would have loved the romances and crushing had they been older, say 15-16. ELEVEN is way too young. Ick. Yes, I realize nowadays eleven is ‘standard’ but I feel the maturity coming with older age helps a romance.
I’m afraid I almost agree with Michelle… I still love Larisa but she needs to act her age. Sandra too… make Cloud your BF when it’s appropriate. ;D
This is just a minor detail, but I believe the “or” in panel 6 should be dropped, as it gives Larisa’s line a nuance that feels slightly off – rather than being a reflective question, it turns into more of a challenging reply.
For example, contrast the following two dialogs (of my own invention. Any similarity with real people or places is purely coincidental):
and:
That’s my two cents. I’m sorry to nitpick strips more than a year-and-a-half old, but I only recently started reading your comic (and I must say it has quickly made its way to being one of my favorites). I believe the intention of the strip is clear enough despite this. I merely wanted to help out with a delicate point of the english language.
Of course, I should point out that I’m not a native english speaker either… I might be completely mistaken in this post (no one else seems to have given any though to this matter in eighty one posts, after all), and would appreciate it if someone could correct me in this case.
