Concerning me personally, this behavior was not a real tic, but an occasionally self-imposed challenge to make particularly boring walks a little less boring. Which I eventually outgrew when my step width was becoming too big for the tiles of Nuremberg’s pavements.
I strongly prefer my volume controls (and any other control unit) to be set to multiples of 2 or 5, though.
- Woo: Why are you trying not to step on the cracks between the tiles?
- Sandra: I don’t do that!
- Woo: Are you sure? You’re still walking in this weird pattern…
- Sandra: My next pet will be a goldfish!

Goldfish ‘pet’? Wouldn’t that wind up being more like Woo’s next ‘late night snack’? After all, raccoons will go far for the seafood.
On a related note; that brings a fashback to mind. Work used to have live fish for sale. (Glad they lost that ‘inventory’.) Goldfish were, by far, the cheapest. All so many never lived to be purchased. Now, I don’t know much about fish. Perhaps, they just had short lives. Or, were very hard to keep alive in captivity. But, scooping out the ‘expired inventory’ was a daily chore with them. And, then there was this one day, when a vacation day so important rolled around, the store actually closed. No employees. No feedings. Next day…no live fish. Hince, one reason why I never step foot into pet stores…
@ Francisco:
Are you REALLY the Survivorman?
hahaha i just had the same experience while walking home from school today with my friend
i still do this
@ Pyth:
I think he might have, yeah. I did that up till I was about 17, and it only got more complex as I got older lol (in fact I still catch myself watching where I’m putting my feet, from time to time). I never associated it with my Asperger’s, and I’m not aware of any of my other Autistic friends doing it, but in hindsight it makes a lot of sense that it would be an Autistic trait
Oh my god, me too! I think it became a psychological compulsion, but there was definately an element of challenging myself/making walking more interesting
I have this tic in real life. Which, on recollection via the comments, was probably only noticed by one of my friends because she had a tendency to match strides with whomever she was walking alongside (a habit I’ve found to be common among those formerly in bands, color guards, and ROTCs/their equivalents).
Hahaha, you don’t say?! XD It’s the same thing with me where when I’m dealing with say the TV volume, it has to be multiples of five and it bugs me otherwise… XD It’s interesting to know I’m not the only one like that. :3
Most paving tiles are a poor distance apart to do that effectively these days… so I’ve mostly given up. Still, if I find myself in an area where the tiles roughly match my regular pace then I’ll fall back into the habit.
Hehe, I like my volumes to be even numbers OR (since it is odd, but in my head that is ok) multiples of 5 🙂
I’m kinda like that with volume controls too.
Geez. I thought I was the only weirdo doing that.
That’s relieving.
In part.
Another part tells me I’m still a weirdo.
And the last part wants to be the *only* weirdo!
Whoa! Other people have to have equal sensations, too! And there’s a word for it? Finally, I know what the heck you m doing when I scratch an itch or step on a rock!@ Tualha:
