[0435] I Don’t Want To Be A Bride
└ posted on Thursday, 6 December 2012, by Novil
Vanessa Carlton is my favorite singer and I’m a big fan of her. You can listen to I Don’t Want To Be A Bride on YouTube. She had a big hit in the beginning of the 2000s with A Thousand Miles, but my favorite songs are Who’s To Say from her second album and More Than This from her third album. They’re in my top 10 of all songs I’ve ever listened to.
- TV: That’s not the phone I wanted! You’re pathetic! You’re no longer my daddy!
- Sandra: Disowning your own father for crap like that… how can you sink so low?
- Richard: Are you ready for the Vanessa Carlton concert?
- Sandra: Yeah!
- Sign: NESSA, MARRY ME!
- Teenager: Is that your dad?
- Sandra: NO!!
- Vanessa Carlton: In light of current events, now the second single from my latest album, I Don’t Want To Be A Bride.
Ah, yes, the ever-embarassing ethusiastic fan relative . . . But isn’t your boyfriend the spawn of a fanboy/fangirl mating and named after a Final Fantasy character, Sandra?
Methinks you should expect a lot more of this. Especially if they become your in-laws. XD
Richard’s very progressive, Vanessa. You’ll be the groom instead.
The moment, when your actions turn that “NO” into a big “YES”
…I think she has a legitimate excuse.
Poor Richard. You know he’s dense when you realize that not only does she not want to be a bride, but she made a whole song about it. Despite this, here is a grown man without a wife asking her to marry him with a sign while cheering for her and wearing what I assume is a rather embarrassing t-shirt. And his face…oh GOSH his face…is absolutely hilarious. It made my day! XD
I think the overboard train just left the station
@ Petah-Petah:
Okay, not only was that comment funny although I barely understand what gave you that idea, but your avatar is really funny and makes me smile every time while I laugh inside at how perfectly it matches every one of your comments. XD

And is it just me, or is she choosing to sing that song as a result of seeing his sign? XD
Now i’m curious what number it was on her album before number 2?
Why is this comic in black and white again? just curious.
My sister does this All The Time!
I’d like to point out the social double standard associated with Richard’s actions in this comic. He is seen as creepy by the rest of the crowd, but Twilight cougars or women of all ages throwing Tom Jones their panties is perfectly okay.
Although in Sandra’s defense I’d fervently disclaim any form of familial relationship with persons doing any of these.
Ah yes MTV, showing drama of over pampered children that never work a single day of their life. Good for you Sandra to turn it off.
Also I dunno Vanessa, Richard is a great guy. He’s geeky and kinda silly but he know when he need to do what’s right. He rose his daughter right too. Don’t be afraid of the ring.
Also to Sandra, you thing it’s embarrassing dealing with your dad attitude? just wait until you have your own in-laws 😉
A gushing fanboy/family member, is always waaaay better than those “Sweet 16” brats who throw tantrums at the drop of a hat. Although, I’ll admit MTV’s gotten pretty good at showing the world how hopelessly spoilt and gone some of the current generation have gotten.
@ goldenrhino:
Seems legit to me, too.

But David and Ye Thuza are already married, so they couldn’t do this.
OK, I suppose if they met Yoshitaka Amano, or Nobue Uemetsu, Ye Thuza would happily let David marry them, as well…
@ Petah-Petah:
ADRIAANTJEUH!! 😀
@ illeatyourself:
I’d say it looks like it. 😉
@ illeatyourself:
“In light of current events…”
Probably. Or she could be referring to a previous concert that Richard attended.
Verily I say unto thee, Sandra, that this day, even in this night, before the singer sing twice, thou shalt deny your dad thrice.
@ Thiago:
“… deny thy dad”, I meant
@ Malchus: Yeah but she should only worry about that if they meet the owner of Nintendo or SquareEnix to be honest
@ username159:
No – I’m pretty sure ‘Twilight Moms’ are creepy as hell too. At least I’ve always found them to be such. Richards being -at worst- just really embarrassing.
I remember buying her first album after hearing “Thousand Miles”. The rest of the album was darker than I was expecting, but still wonderful.
Glad mom didn’t do that at the Josh Groban concert…considering I would rather him marry me 😀
lololol
Her dad is weird.
I get the feeling Richard would be more civil in a WWE live show.
Another great comic!
Been loving Sandra and Woo, I found it last month, and then I demolished the archive in a matter of days.
You never know, this story arc could end up along similar lines to Marry Me lol
Is it just me, or does the guy to the left in the last panel look like a Henohenomoheji face?
He must have been a hit at the Lilith Fair concerts! 😀
@ Thiago:
All I can say is at least this is something legitimately embarrassing rather then disowning your dad because he didn’t get you the right model of smart phone.
Sandra’s not along no one seems to want to admit they know her dad at the moment. As others have already pointed out Cloud’s parents are probably worse……and his sister. Go Cloud GO!
Wow, our first real world character appearance and it’s Vanessa Carlton, of all people. I interviewed her back when her first album was climbing the charts and she was a very sweet and smart young lady; I hoped her career would have more legs than it’s managed so far, but she’s not starving so I guess all is well.
On another topic, this is probably why, when I offered my daughter a chance to come see Never Shout Never in concert with me, she fled screaming. >.>
Good to see he’s following her album’s title of be not nobody.
I guess we’re supposed to see the parallels between the two, but it’s a difference between someone being shallow and greedy, and someone avoiding humiliation.
@ Vercalos:
The divergence IS the parallel!
Disowning your seniors over something materialistic is a relatively new phenom, borne of Madison Avenue and the continual encouragement of a consumerist society.
Distancing yourself (at least temporarily) from a relative who is doing something out of character and embarrassing is as old as family itself. In this case, all will likely be well – unless Sandra runs into someone she knows at the concert as well. Then, things can get rather sticky (they’d get sticky if she weren’t there, but it’s all the worse because she is.)
Make sense? Or have your parents never done anything to embarrass you? (Bear in mind that embarrassing your children is an ancient right as well – that’s why parents take baby snaps!)
@ Isolder74: Still quoting the Good Book, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”
Ok, evidently, I am jesting, the situations are dissimilar, and Sandra has a good excuse to distance herself from Richard’s enthusiasm (and, unlike the TV dad, his feelings were not hurt, he was too busy to even take note of Sandra’s denial).
Still, Sandra could be a little less pharisaical,
@ Thiago:
A possible sequel: Ms. Carlton decides such an enthusiastic fan, annoying as he may be, deserves being rewarded and gives him a backstage pass extending to his companions. I will be awesome, won’t it?When the guards ask Richard if Sandra is his invitee:”I have never seen this girl in all my life, kind sirs. She must be looking for her parents”. Now the tables are turned.
@ JKelley:
To be perfectly honest, I’ve never had those moments when distanced myself from my parents. When my dad does something crazy, I’m usually right there with him.
I was wondering, how many Sandra and Woo comics do you have made in advance?
Just now realized that Sandra has no mom 🙁
I really love Vanessa, as well. From the first time I heard “A Thousand Miles,” I adored her. I was pretty broke as a teenager, and her first CD was one of the few I owned, back then. While it took until after “Ordinary Day” was released as a single for me to get the money for we album, and her two singles are what made me want her album, they are actually, to me, two of her less-impressive songs. Ordinary Day is very much her style, with unique perspective on the world, and less catering to what people want, but to me, I’ve always felt like maybe when she wrote A Thousand Miles, it was slightly different and someone else came in and had her change it. It just always felt like it wasn’t as genuine as her other songs. If I had to choose my absolute favorites, I’d have to say “Rinse,” “Twilight,” “Sway,” & “Pretty Baby” are still my favorites. I have SO many memories involving that first album that its almost as if it were in my blood. These days, I love every moment of that CD. Which is impressive after *thinks* 10+ years of it?
Richard,if want a pop star to marry you, you’re in the wrong webcomic. XD I wonder who will get that reference?
I’m glad I don’t know of this person.
I don’t want to know of this person.
I’ve been conned into listening to crappy music too many times by too many people with excrutiatingly bland / lame taste in sounds.
I distrust everyone’s taste in music by default unless I met them in a metal pub or at a gig (generally in the moshpit).
I LOVE that song! I remember when I first heard it I just cried cuz it was so true…. was. But still I love her songs 🙂
What happened on the T.V. was absolute sh*t, but what Sandra did was completely reasonable. PUBLIC. EMBARRASSMENT.
@ illeatyourself:
“In light of recent events”-she said
Why would not she want to be a bridge?
