As I understand it, there was no “reenactment”, nor staging.
As I understand it, the unit commander of the unit whose flag was originally flown recognized the historical significance of this flag. It was also his unit’s flag. To protect and conserve it, he had it removed and replaced with a lesser (but larger) flag from the carrier. This happened after the island was declared safe. Unfortunately, while they were doing this, a news cameraman happened by (they didn’t have “embedded journalists” in that age), took a picture, and didn’t bother to find out what he was seeing before sending it all over the country.
(The unit commander has been interviewed for TV. I don’t remember the program.)
Personally, as a result of all this, I consider this image an embarrassment.

Well, there is always the possibility of getting banned… but whether that is of any significance to you or not is another matter entirely.
My thought on the matter can be summarised quite simply as “better you than me”.
Then again, I just got banned from commenting ANOTHER webcomic just yesterday (arguing against the use of Trigger Warnings on the “Sister Claire” comic)… which I think takes my tally up to about 5 webcomic bannings, which doesn’t exactly suggest a lot of concern for avoiding such things.
