Heavenly Nostrils
Ozy and Millie by D.C. Simpson, a comic strip featuring the serene young fox Ozy and his hyperactive best friend Millie, drew me into the world of webcomics in 2005. Simpson’s much anticipated graphic novel Rain Dog became the biggest letdown in the history of webcomics, though. It received several extremely negative reviews and got even mocked by the former fans of Ozy and Millie.
But now Simpson is back with the all-ages comic strip Heavenly Nostrils (start reading here). The first strip was published on 22 April 2012 and since the comic updates seven times a week, there are now already over 300 strips. The two main characters are the the chaotic nine-year-old girl Phoebe and her best friend, the unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils who is regularly stunned by her own beauty and awesomeness. I think it’s easiest to describe Heavenly Nostrils as “Calvin and Hobbes for girls”, but I mean that in a good way. I think the strongest point of the comic is Phoebe who is immediately likeable. Her character design was clearly inspired by Millie, so all Ozy and Millie fans should get their money’s time’s worth. I’m also very fond of the black-and-white artwork, especially the funny facial expressions.
Sometimes I think I like it overall even better than O&M! The main downside is a very small cast; almost every strip features both protagonists.
I read it a week a go and I love its jokes and witty dialogues. Insta fave from the get go. Reminds me a lot of C&H. Need a crossover ASAP.
I like HN! 😀
Thanks for bringing it up. 🙂
I found Heavenly Nostrils a while back while trying to scout up if anything ever came of Raine Dog (always wanted to see where that strip was going, but I can understand Simpson’s decision to not pursue it.) Heavenly Nostrils is a goldmine of a comic. 😀
I found it a few weeks ago, when some Precocious-fan mentioned that Simpson is doing Ozy&Millie reruns on gocomics. It’s great.
I liked Raine Dog as well. As I never saw any information on when/whether it would be continued, I have it still bookmarked in the ‘hiatus’-section of my comic-bookmarks. Probably should bookmark Heavenly Nostrils instead (just kept it in an open tab for the last few weeks)
Btw. Novil, I recall you being among those ‘former fans of Ozy and Millie’. Therefore I’m glad to see that you did not abandon Simpson back then.
Wow. Raine Dog is one of those things you google and then regret having done so. I didn’t even mind most of the excesses in “I drew this” (I suppose I have leftist leanings, but DC tends towards fundamentalism…), but that was just a bit bonkers.
Can sort of see where she was going with it, sort of inspired from Maus and Persepolis (without carrying through their memoir/travelogue parts) to voice a detailed, allegorical political screed, but man did it go wrong o_O
