I thought it would be something like this… but more along the lines of the linx only bieng wounded and begging to leave so her children don’t die. I guess I was wrong. (seriously, why let it go to waste? I doubt she’d feed her to the kids.)
Oh boo hoo. Think the cats woulda cared if little baby squirrels came out and cried over their dead mom? Real predators don’t give a crap, Ruth, nut up or shut up.
This is not something I was expecting from this comic. I’m not likely to vote for Sandra and Woo ever again, I don’t know if I want to even read it anymore. There is plenty of RL sadness in the world, I don’t need more from stuff I read to enjoy.
@ Verdauga:
While I can understand the desire to not be inundated by sadness from all aspects of your life, not all things can be sunshine an peaches either. This is one comic in the entirety of this comic, with perhaps one or two more following. If you’re going to let this one incident prevent you from reading what I’m going to assume was otherwise a very enjoyable comic for you, then that’s on you, not on the authors. Personally, while I’m not exactly thrilled with this particular story arc, I know that Powree and Oliver are going somewhere with it that will ultimately make things all better.
Guess it goes to show there are two sides to every coin. People go through life ignoring the consequences of their actions, and sometimes that just isn’t fair. The Lynx would have ripped Ruth to shreds without a second thought, yes, but that’s predatory nature. I’m not saying that makes the Lynx better than the squirrel, though, because technically Ruth was defending herself, but she also didn’t have to be so happy about killing the Lynx. Very thought provoking and well written, Oliver! And my compliments to Powree for capturing the emotion brilliantly.
Gotta remember that true wild meat eaters do not let their kill go to waste, they stash it and come back later for more.
All the wild cats, wolves, coyotes, bears and even badgers do this, so why not a tool using meat eating squirrel?
But now she has kits to take care of or find them a new mommy!
I thought it would be something like this… but more along the lines of the linx only bieng wounded and begging to leave so her children don’t die. I guess I was wrong. (seriously, why let it go to waste? I doubt she’d feed her to the kids.)
Well, indirectly. She makes milk, which she feeds to her kittens.
@ Garrett Williams:
my thoughts exactly – predators kill other animals to eat, BUT they never let a single scrap go to waste….if they don´t eat it all themselves there are vultures, foxes, rats and whatnot waiting for the scraps. but to kill such a huge one for only a little slice is just….wrong.
on the other hand, as sad as it is for the cubs, mother nature knows no fence season 🙁 nevertheless, i hope ruth will find a way to help those cubs – maybe show them to sandra who could take them to some ranger?
I think one of the commenters on Sunday called it, that the lynx was only hunting to feed its family. There’s a difference between hunting to survive and hunting for sport, because the latter is a choice. Squirrels only eat meat when no other option is available. Even then, they only go after small prey, enough to sustain themselves. By using a using a gun and wasting the rest, Ruth is clearly hunting out of decadence, not necessity. So something like this was bound to happen, assuming she didn’t set her sights on Shadow or Woo first; I’m surprised she didn’t go gunning for Sandra, given that humans are at the top of the trophic scale.
OH THE FEELS!!!
Ok, I’ve been reading this comic for a while now, and it’s great. You’re an awesome artist. But this is the first time I’ve commented because You Make Me Cry!!! This had better have a semi-happy ending or I’m never coming back again… *sniff* *sniff*
This is a interesting development. There will be polarized opinions about morality vs food cycle in the comment section.
But nature is just like that, I know it sounds cruel but that also explain why Lily was deathly afraid with human first. Animals were fine tuned to be ready 24/7 to face/run from danger. Even wild cats in the jungle are sleeping with their ears perked up.
Ha ha ha ha ha! Are we gonna have a South Park crossover now? Sorry, but I can’t help but laugh, because that’s what this reminds me of. Blood orgy, anyone?
@ AckAckAck:
Nature? This is a squirrel who kills larger predators with a GUN and then lets most of the carcass go to waste. Nature is over in the corner asking herself how she let a *second* species go so far wrong 🙂

Ruth is quite inhuman! Or quite human, depending on how you look at it.
As for the hunting humans part, I’ve heard that humans actually taste like crap. Uh, not that I would know. Just, hum, heard it somewhere.

my thoughts exactly – predators kill other animals to eat, BUT they never let a single scrap go to waste….if they don´t eat it all themselves there are vultures, foxes, rats and whatnot waiting for the scraps.
In that case, Ruth didn’t let anything go to waste either because vultures, foxes and rats will have whatever she doesn’t eat.
It is in way or shape unheard of that animals kills an excessive amount of prey and then leave most of it untouched. Animals do not have a “waste not” instinct. They will gladly engage in activities that if performed by humans, would be considered wasteful.
They do not because killing excessive amount of prey they can´t eat is riddiculous waste of energy… and in extreme such compulsion can lead to so profoud decimation of prey animals that hey will not have anything more to hunt.
Meaning those who have such instinct in fact die of hunger in long run. Eliminating this trait from the genepool…
In fact this is demonstrable by simple use u mathematcs.
@ Cinnamoon: @ Cinnamoon: @ Cinnamoon:
she said she eats the puppies but shes never faced this kind of situation before as this time she kills the mother and the kits comes out and are not understanding why their mom is laying there. sure a predator wouldnt have cared but shes not a true predator yet as her kind is still eating nuts and shes more or less one of a kind therefore giving her a bit more feeling of compassion and saddness than a predator that can kill without thinking of the consequences but then again we also gotta think on that this is just a comic and nothing is real so everything can be changed
Now for my own piece. By viewing this comic (or any others) you must realize that this world belongs to the creators of the comic and what happens in it is by their design. You are being allowed to view the world that they have created, but you do not get a say in what happens. (Unless they give you a say.) So quit whining about this work of fiction and grow up.
(I didn’t start reading game of thrones and then become upset when a character dies in it due to some craziness. I realized it was fiction and moved on.)
This comics been dragging for a long time and now this. This isn’t about predators and prey dynamics, or any real world event. To me it’s just sick and shows a total lack of creativity or imagination of the artist and writer. So in short I’m done, and I won’t be recommending this web comic further. It had promise, but it has made its run and failed.
If she is a real predator in her soul then there are other options for her dismay :
She is chagrined at the evidence of two more big predators – once they grow up, and the indication there was a father in the area- one more fully grown predator to worry about.
or
She is appalled at the competition coming in so fast, she barely took one slice off her kill! and the competition is already successfully using psychology warfare on her.
Real predator-prey foraging games are all about trade-offs of food and safety, competition, interference and resource depression. Give Ruth the credit of being a wild animal who excels at her game too.
Ruth: “SCORE! Appetizers!”
Oh my 🙁
This is just sad, now.
Also, she only takes a little slice? I guess that makes sense, considering that slice could probably feed her for a week.
well…I knew that’s how its going to be….I think she’s going to stop hunting….
I thought it would be something like this… but more along the lines of the linx only bieng wounded and begging to leave so her children don’t die. I guess I was wrong. (seriously, why let it go to waste? I doubt she’d feed her to the kids.)
Wow, the downside of being a killer is pretty dark isn’t it ruth
Aw, that’s messed up 🙁
Oh my, those poor lynx kittens :'(
Oh boo hoo. Think the cats woulda cared if little baby squirrels came out and cried over their dead mom? Real predators don’t give a crap, Ruth, nut up or shut up.

For instance, why does she feel sorry for the lynx’s kits when she said, in her first meeting with Sid, that she EATS the pups of the wolves?
Wait , wait, wait, you know what would be realy fucked up, if they asked her for the meat in her bag
@ Cinnamoon:
I think it’s because wolves were considered stupid by some prey animals.

That squirrel is a MONSTER. >:(
Lol, it’s still 5th of June here in Iceland.

I agree with the persons who’s comment was hidden. I also voted for this comic but, I don’t think im gonna read it anymore now.
Ruth isn’t feeling sorry for them, she’s concerned that they’ll try to eat her too.

Bet she is whistling “In the thicket the mighty thicket the Squirrel eats tonight”, hope she does not offer any to the kits!!!!!

Ruth… you should be ashamed!

I don’t know if anyone got it, but look at the title: “Ruthless?”
“Ruth- less?”
🙂
But still, poor kits!
This had to happen eventually.
OH THE FEELS!!!

Extra note: I wish Sid will ask Woo to bring those kittens to the animal sanctuary. At least they can survive better there.
Man, this is like watching Bambi, but this time it’s predator edition….
@ Verdauga:
Seriously? Grow up. No seriously, grow up. Gods forbid you have a little drama in a story.
Ha ha ha ha ha! Are we gonna have a South Park crossover now? Sorry, but I can’t help but laugh, because that’s what this reminds me of. Blood orgy, anyone?
Aw man.
This made me so sad.
Nature is a cruel mistress, no wonder humans fight against it so much.

And in an instant, this arc went from hilarious to tear-jerking.
