[0491] Nothing For Wolf Fans
└ posted on Monday, 17 June 2013, by Novil
I feel the need to clarify that I personally have nothing against wolves.
- Sid: Ruth has decided to change her diet. She’ll eat only old and sick predators from now on.
- Shadow: Cool!
- Woo: But what about wolf pups? You’ll still eat those, right?
- Shadow: It’d be almost a crime if you didn’t!
- Ruth: What do you think, Sid?
- Sid: Geri and Freki(*) have never apologized for eating Ratatoskr’s firstborn, have they?
- Caption: (*) = Odin’s wolves.
- Ruth: Okay, let’s add wolf pups to my menu, then!
- Woo and Shadow: Yay!
Well, Freki is after all drawn from a word that means, to be demanding beyond reason, like a spoiled kid. (There is no proper English word for it,)
I think thats the first time anyone in this comic has said Yay!
It reminds me of Housepets!
Yay for racism! \o/
perfect
But… the puppies…. Gh…
You’ll regret it when you’ll see the same scene as before happen with a mother wolf crying over the loss of her pups!!
@ Ellert0:
Isn’t that the very definition of a “brat”?
HEY!!!! What did us wolfies ever do to incur such wrath…….other than simply being our kawaii, lovable selves?
This whole story arc has been nothing but a series of incomprehensible double standards.
What’s that I see… Woo on a pogo stick somehow bouncing up and down on top of the the ocean? OH NO—stay away from that great white!!! Oh snap!
Wait Wait if they eat the Pup None will be left to grow up, to be eaten as adults.
And here we see Shadow’s and Woo’s view on being in the middle of the predator hierarchy.
I think this is a good conclusion. We must remember that this is the animal kingdom we’re talking about. The human rules and hirearchy fly off the window. Animals will have their own morality.
sure, ruth, you can eat the pups! the parents can just make more!
Ah, the eating of children. This truly IS a family comic. he he he.

Was this comment supposed to make sense, or did your neurons sort of snap like rubber bands for a second?
@ Elementalist:
that appears to be the point. kinda like an adventure time episode
@ Neospector:
He’s probably making a reference to this.
Sid: “This therapeutic discussion is now over.”
Booooooooooooooooooo
and Booooooooooooo
oh and have i forgotten Boooooo?`
Somehow i knew that the only time someone would feel sorry for Predators, that the Pred wouldn’t be a wolf. And of course now it is ok to eat Wolf pups.
Always picking on wolfs here.just because they are much more awesome than raccoon and Foxes.
This may seem like an odd question but what will happen to the cubs of the mother that ruth killed. I don’t mind the story but, is there some kind of redemption for what she did.
“Yay”? O_o
Okay, seriously, this is going a bit too far…
@ Izumi Ryu:
Nah, the word brat is more specific to children, and covers a wider range of bad behaviors, the word “Freki” is taken from is more specific to just someone having the mindset that they should always be able to get what they want, and that they should be able to demand it of others.
Team Edward Approves this comic.
@ Ellert0:
In modern English a close translation might be “Entitled”.
@ Elementalist:
Well, he’s wrong. This is pretty much classic SW. The predator-prey dynamic has always been portrayed from the individual characters’ points of view without much regard for any kind of globally-consistent moral system. That would be a problem if it were a church, but it’s just a silly comic. Also, this arc was daring, interesting, thought-provoking, controversial, and yes, funny. If this is what you call jumping the shark, then jump away.
@ nitro:
Or an episode of American Dad
This comic makes no sense! They’re arbitrarily deciding which animals are okay to eat or not based solely upon their own personal experiences!
You know, completely unlike how veal is totally okay to eat but puppies aren’t.
What I want to know is how Ruth gets ammo for her derringer. Humans have a hard enough time getting .22lr nowadays!
I’m sorry, I think I can’t read this comic like I used to (for obvious reasons). I tried, really, but I can’t see it the same way now. So I stop here or I’m going to make my derpession worse. No, don’t bring the “you’re a crybaby” reactions. I am saying goodbye to a high quality comic and I give all my congratulations to its authors.
Hrmmmm. . . prolly shouldn’t post a link to the that vid on vimeo, the one called “Wolfsong”. Fairly sure that would be. . . kinda evil.
NO~!… I mean… uh… ah, who am I kidding, Not the puppies~.
Whoever brought up the wolf pups, please buy yourself a cookie
WHAAAAT?! What about the baby wolves?? TT_TT
And I will not hesitate to eat squirrel kits.
Kittens = inspire guilt!
Puppies = Dinner.
Religion condoning the murder of the young! I’m sure they are nice and tender and delicious though. 😛
Only recently started reading the comic and I just now caught up, keep up the great work, looking forward to making this one of my regularly read comics.
Well, less wasted meat, that’s for sure.
O.K. Before it was bad because you were basically killing Bambie’s mother all over again. Yes it was a bobcat instead of a deer but it’s basically the same thing. Now you’re having her kill the babies and that’s suppose to be O.K.?
I get the dark humor of it but if you thought you got it bad by killing a mama in front of her babies just imagine how bad you’re gonna get it now.
Frankly I never liked the Ruth character and hope she gets her head blown or bitten off soon. No need for bad and useless characters.
@ Xanni:
How about “Politically Correct”?
“It’s okay to eat wolf pups. Geri and Freki never apologized for eating squirrel kits!”
Ah, the glamour of a squirrels thought process. Nothing quite like getting revenge for something that happened to someone else thousands of years ago.
@ Kivuli:
I don’t know what caliper her little pea-shooter is, but it is definitely not a 22 long rifle. There is a reason it’s called “long rifle”.
Most ‘hold out’ pistols (of which Derringer is just one manufacturer) are of large caliper (at least .35 and even as large as .58) so a target hit is a target that ‘stays hit’. Such firearms usually (purposely?) have more powder than is needed to push the shell out the short barrel for a more… effective?… discharge.
Ruth’s gun does not seem to have that sound effect, so the thought it may be a smaller caliper is probably correct. Also, I doubt Ruth can handle much recoil (especially the way she holds her gun).
I am amazed at how thin skinned a lot of the people here are. Novil should not have to heed the words of the few loud who lash out at her comic, over her own desires for the comic. Sandra and Woo is one of the most innocent comics I know about, and relative to other comics, neither this strip nor any other strip she has written, has been that bad at all.
And as someone who has SAD and can very much write from both perspectives, those trying to use their depression to guilt trip the author into writing different comics are acting juvenile.
I look forwards to reading Sandra and Woo in the winter.

Kittens make adorable faces, puppies do the same but usually when they pee on the carpet. Take it from a dog owner, kittens are much less guilty.
When they get older, they reverse roles.
@ Saru:
Speciesism
Sandra and Woo is so
goodamazing! No no eating wolf pups on my menu are now fresh squirrel heads your next gurl and I kill you all idoits
Ah, creatures of nature…you work in such mysterious ways.
In those who take extreme offense to the eating of young pups, keep in mind that these are animals (two being a raccoon and fox who are very oppurtunistic omnivores), so human ethics fall flat here.
Even then, humans aren’t as picky. Unless you are a vegan, you’ve had your fill of cows, pigs, chickens, etc. young and old. And some Koreans and Chinese people eat dogs, which we may find appalling just as most people eat cows which Indians or those who practice Hinduism find just as appalling. It isn’t so black and white.
Back on topic, I was kinda hoping for Woo to say “woo” moreso than “yay.”
I think it would be awesome if Ruth adopted the lynx’s kids. Wouldn’t it be so cool to have a carnivorous squirrel being a mom to two predatory cats? And there could be some awesome character development! And jokes! Jokes galore!
@ Valkeiper2012:
“Derringers” are indeed made in .22lr, as well as plenty of other calibers to include the .41 rimfire. That is a very specialized cartrige and not in common use today. Most modern “derringers” are .22lr, .38 special, .45 ACP, or something along those lines. The .22lr cartridge, while the LR does stand for “Long Rifle”, is frequently used in non-rifle applications. An entire series of pistols by Ruger are dedicated to it as are a wide swath of easily concealed handguns and unique carbines. I seriously doubt, however, that a squirrel could maintain control over anything more powerful than a .22lr so that is the caliber I presumed she is using. Thus, the statement stands.
@ Ellert0:
perhaps two: Petulant brat
