[0534] Fifty-Eight Thousand Six Hundred Twelve Raccoons
└ posted on Thursday, 5 December 2013, by Novil
“I quit.” – Powree after she heard that she has to draw 58,612 raccoons.
- Lily: I’m afraid, Woo.
- Woo: Don’t worry, Lily. I’ll watch you better than any hawk.
- Lily: But what if we get separated?
- Woo: Then we’ll meet in the parking lot.
- Lily: But what if there’s a mass panic?
- Woo: We’ll stay away from large crowds.
- Lily: But what if an abyss opens up and the four huntsmen of the apocalypse unleash a hail of bullets on us?!
- Woo: Then we’ll climb down the abyss and eat all their cookies while they’re busy!
Not unlike how I feel whenever I have to go shopping in a crowded store.
…..this made my heart as fluffy and bushy and and and warm as a raccoons tail X)

I have fear of crowds (if that’s a thing), too, and I really don’t feel what you feel. I’m a guy, and I would totally do the same as Lily, even if all I had with me was a male friend. That, or run away.
That’s exactly what I do to people when they’re not looking, too. Except I’m Scottish, so it’s not cookies it’s shortbread, but same thing really. Can’t beat shortbread…
@ Blitzkrieg1701:
I myself don’t mind a few crowds, but when you see all this carnage caused by Black Friday, people getting trampled to death, multiple injuries, it makes me nervous. Who actually thought that was a good idea?
@ Someone:
Well…I guess most people do find crowds scary…I’m a timid person…my sister isn’t and it’s amazing what a little support can do…she will just lead me through places I fear and…poof! It all goes away…so it depends on you and the person you’re with…
I did have to chuckle at the “four horsemen” reference, though I sympathize with the fear of crowds (don’t suffer it particularly, but understand it!)
But… Lily, don’t borrow trouble. The interest rate is horrendous and having it borrowed doesn’t do you much good.
Very good strip.
Hope Powree reconsiders and stays on. ^_^
How the heck did Sandra talk Richard into this? “Would you mind driving me and Woo and Woo’s girlfriend (who normally wouldn’t go near you and that’s just as well because she’s not vaccinated) to an Event? How do I know about this? Ummm… you’re better off not asking because if you did, I’d have to tell you Woo can talk.”
First panel: “Have fun”
Before second panel: “Oh, I wasn’t talking to anyone, Dad. They should be back in a few hours. Here, I brought Sudoku.”
That’s a lot of raccoons. I would like to check those figures, though… one, two, three, four, five, six, seven… hang on, this could take a while…
Lily could take comfort in the fact that if a top predator did show up, the probability of it targeting her would be greatly reduced…
I hope Powree reconsiders. S&W wouldn’t be the same without her beautiful work. 😉
Go behind the enemy line and eat their cookies? Actually that’s a brilliant strategy. Imagine World War 2 when nazi are too busy attacking both fronts and some soldiers from Allies was sent to sneak in and steal hitler’s cookies.
Also, what this event will be called then? Butterstock? Buttstock? Coonstock?
Wait, do the 58,612 raccoons also include Woo and Lily?
This is gonna be bothering me for the next few hours…
@ Ego:
Did she actually quit? I really hope not, ’cause that’s a really good cartoon rendition of 58,612 raccoons anyway

Probably an economist. They’re all sociopaths. (Except for the ones who visit this site and see this comment.)
Poor, poor Powree. Great job drawing it, though!
I’m with Neutrino: How did Sandra get Richard to bring the three of them to the event without explaining Woo’s talking?? Nice strip too. 🙂
Ok must be a different time zone. Here it is the fourth. Either that or my computers showing me the future again.
Well, Lily, it could be worse. They could be humans.
goodness you guys are fast at commenting.
That is EXACTLY the strategy a raccoon would suggest! I love it!
The four huntsmen? What are they? Death, Death, Death, and Bob?
It’s the new WOOdstock 😀
I voted! I vote most every day… great comic.
@ Cyberohero:
Jimbob, Jimbob Junior, Grandpa Jimbob, and Larry (He’s the Black Sheep of the Family)
Come to the dark side! We have Cooki…DAMMIT WOO!

I doubt it! 🙂
And I really like the way she did draw that racoon gathering as well.
Lilly doesn’t even like houses. She must have needed sedatives to ride in a car for miles.
@ Adamas:
It’s the Larry from that episode of Teen Titans, isn’t it.
@ Cyberohero:
Courtesy of swotting up on Wikipedia, The Four Horsemen first show up in Revelation Ch. 6 and are only described as riding on white, red, black and pale (or green/greenish yellow) horses; generally regarded as symbolising Conquest (“rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest”), War (“its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other”), Famine (carries a pair of scales and indicates grain prices ten times higher than normal) and Death (“Its rider was named Death, and Hell was following close behind him”) respectively. Together, “they were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine, plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.”
Let’s just ignore the fact that at the height of the British Empire, we owned a quarter of the planet’s land area… 😀
🙁 I feel torn between voting for this comic and another comic (kickgirl). What to do??
@ mittfh:
“In an 1865 speech in Oakland, California, Rev. W. B. Brown of New Jersey quipped that the reason the sun never set upon the Empire was that God did not trust the British in the dark. The quip has been attributed to Abraham Lincoln, among others.
According to Richard Lederer’s mock history of the world assembled from errors found in student-written papers, ‘t]he sun never set on the British Empire because the British Empire was in the east and the sun sets in the west’.-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_empire_on_which_the_sun_never_sets#Satirical_references
@ Thiago:
It still doesn’t but only thanks to some Small islands at either end.

@ Octothorp:
huh…I’m pretty sure you can vote for as many comics as you want, just not the same one more than once in 24 hours or so.
Are they sure it’s the event they wanted to get to and not a black friday sale? XD
Neutrino wrote:
How about this version:
“Hey dad, I found this great place not too far away! I’d like to check it out, enjoy the nature and the views. Maybe hike a little. How about it?
Oh, and can Woo and his girlfriend come along as well? I’m sure they’d like a little a little variety, something a bit different to their usual daily life. You know how curious raccoons are.”
Most parents would probably jump at the first one, seeing their kid wanting to spend some time outside by choice. We know that he encourages such behaviour. And given that he has already driven both raccoons in his car (and in far harsher conditions), he probably wouldn’t mind the latter as well.
And a kid telling its pet to have fun is hardly anything out of the ordinary.
Quite an easy task actually.
@ Octothorp:
You can vote every day. Just split your votes between them.
@ Octothorp:
Vote for -both-! It is allowed by TWC. 🙂
@ Someone:
it very much is a thing. it’s called “agoraphobia”, from the greek word for “marketplace” (hence, the crowds) . many people do suffer from this and can sympathize with both you and Lily…
Oh, So Lily isn’t just scared of humans, she is just shy in general. I bet that she is going to get lost in the crowd and Woo will be to busy watching Butterfly to notice.
Greenwood Goat wrote:
(chuckle) In a crowd of raccoons (re: omnivorous) that large, a “top predator” would quickly become an snack.
I just noticed… panel 1… Sandra looks like she’s stepping out from the… driver side door?
Oh man, do you have any idea how much POOP 50000-60000 racoons PRODUCE?
@ fots:
It could be the back of a car. Or maybe they have English car 😀
This must be what Christmas shopping looks like.
Lots of raccoons.
Poor Lily. I knew she had a problem with humans, but large crowds? “What if we get separated?” Well, don’t you technically get separated every day, since Woo lives with humans and you don’t? I’m sure you two will find each other the same way you find each other any other time! If not, then you will know something must be wrong, you will know where to look just to be sure, and problem solved! If something IS wrong, then it’s only half solved, unless it’s a really really big problem because then it would only be a third solved, or perhaps a quarter? An eighth? But maybe it’s a really small problem and finding out there is a problem at all is actually three-quarters of the job, and then it’s three-quarters solved!
Gosh dangit, I rambled while trying to be comforting again. 😛
Don’t worry, Lily, I’ve been in crowds countless times, and I’ve even done it on my own, and even one time when I went to an air show with my own GF and we got stuck in the rain and the surprisingly strong wind during the show, which had to be delayed as a result, and we had to book it to the nearest hangar (holding on to my umbrella as well which I think actually bent wrong at some point due to the strong winds) and hide inside where it was PACKED with people just so we could stay dry, and we happened to stick with the rest of my family the whole time we were packed in there, and eventually even managed to squeeze our way out and get to our car until the rain stopped! You’ll be fine, just don’t worry about it. Woo’s there for ya, and if something happens, Sandra and Woo’s other friends can help. 😉
@ fots:
Okay…
By the looks of things she’s either hopping out the front right door or it’s a “suicide” door (hinge at the back) at the back left of the car… here in Australia either of those options are passenger doors.
hmm its not even 350 racoons lets calculate my TV (yes my tv Im using xbox`s app internet explorer) is 32 inches long but the strip (contain the coons) is 15 and a half long by 11 and a half. but we must look at the box spot containg the acctual coons… it is 5 inches by3 and a half and 5X3 1/2= 16 1/2 and each cubic inch of coon is 14 coons sooo 16 1/2X14=336-extra space between the group+the coons that stragled out of the equation due to over numbering the area with extra space resulting in a good ESTIMATE of 320… oops I forgot to add woo and his gf so 322. powree you cheated! by the way if the math is SOMEHOW wrong just remember im only
Aww… she’s like the agoraphobic hampster if hampsters were bigger, carnivorous, and shaped like raccoons.
