- Harriet: Can you help me to–
- Harriet: — Where did you get that painting?
- Landon: Larisa painted it for my birthday. Do you like it?
- Harriet: If I ever see you again with that witch, you’ll be in for a sound beating!

Several people have reacted thinking that Harriet is meant to portray conservative Christians in a bad light. However, remember that BOTH Landon’s parents are conservative Christians. Part of the dramatic function of Landon’s dad, who has been portrayed sympathetically, is to show that the problem is not with being a conservative Christian, but with being Harriet.
@ Egomane:
One aspect of being a fundamentalist is that tolerance is reserved only for your kind. There are a lot of “Christians” who follow a very different version of Jesus. Thankfully they’re not all like that. Just that those who are taint the image of those who aren’t.
@ Avian Mosquito:
Gosh right now I hate my internet. Twice have I typed something clever and it not post. Just say yoursorry for defiling the cChristian and Jewish faith so I don’t have to explain the bible and helosinogenic (may be spelled wrong) religions again. It takes a long time to do so.
Read the cross and the magic mushroom if your curious on the helosinogetic religions and for the bible stuff. It takes so long to type and explain just go to someone real knowledgable about the bible and ask why. If they give you a dumb answer or I don’t know find someone else. Also don’t be surprised when you adk about the raping and they tell you its not rape. If you still believe it is then almost everyone in America is getting raped and as you read this to people are cheating on there spouses raping each other.
Just wanted to note: until I saw the reference that the painting was of Katniss, I thought it was supposed to be an angel (I’ve never read or watched The Hunger Games, so I have only the vaguest idea what Katniss looks like). And Harriet still had that immediate negative reaction, before learning where Landon got the painting. What, you object to pictures of angels, lady?
Trashing the painting … threatening her son with a beating … ohhhhh, yeah, I want to see a painful lesson taught to this unpleasant excuse for a human being.
Cripes, I see my own mother in Harriet. It’s going to be hard if I ever want to try to like her.
Sory for some incorrect texting on last post. Laughing at how it came out a little raunchy yet I think it gets the point across.
Larisa may be gravely dissapointed if Landon will do nothing about it.
And that definitely will end up horribly painful. For all people involved
I meant emotionally painful
@ SmartAlec105:
What about FIRE emblem ? Or playing TF2 with PYRO?
My God, what a horrid bitch. I’m actually now hoping for a divorce with Dad getting custody.
Imagine you had a son who is putting himself in danger. Let’s say he hangs around a dangerous criminal gang. What would you feel? Chance is it’s worry and fear for his life/well-being. Harriet is however not showing any of that, just anger/rage. What we are seeing is not a mother who is worried about her son’s soul. At some level deep in her subconsciousness, she doesn’t herself believe her son putting his soul in danger by being together with Larissa. If she did, she would have been more worried and afraid and less angry.
Of course, the analysis is superfluous, it’s very obvious either way that she is acting on her own agenda and not trying to protect her son.
Is this important?
that mother is in need for a serious beating…
close minded b*tch…
WELL.Shit just go real guys.
The look on Landon’s face…
Jesus, Harriet is such a goddamn bitch.
Next thing you know we find out she is affiliated with the KKK, the Nazis, or (insert racist group of asshole bitches here),
And yes, Christians, I used “God”‘s name and the name of Jesus Christ “in vain”. If “Heaven” doesn’t reject her or anyone like her or affiliated with the above groups, then let Christianity suffer the fate of Paganism, because by definition it now can be considered as corrupt.
I would rather go to hell than be sheltered by those affiliated with goddamn Nazi bitches.
I think I know what happens next.
Larisa sees Landon crying about this. Manages to get the answers on it out of him. Calls the cops on Harriet for child abuse.
Attempt at psychological domination, threatening of a beating? Oh, and the father doesn’t agree?
Harriet be going to jail.
@ Adamas:
Nice wordplay. beat her {liberal}ly (opposite of Conservative {Harriet]).
@ Pissed:
Watch out. That fascist may have dictator friends from 1940…
@ TheSquishedElf:
MR. TORGUE VOICE!!!
And Harriet’s stride represents her as the fascist she is. Bitch.
If Landon had a secret laboratory, I bet he is going to become a Robotnik expy in the future.
nailed it
I’ve been following this webcomic from nearly the beginning, and I’ve enjoyed it for a long time, particularly the interactions between the eponymous duo. It had it’s high points and the low ones, but the quality had always been qconstantly over the media of webcomics you can find around. But this arc , and this strip in particular are forcing me to reevaluate everything.
From previous strips (19 and 116 to begin with) it appares clear the opinion of the authors about followers of traditional religion, but it never went above a certain limit and i had no problems with it; than came this arc and (a part from clear signs of author fatigue) and the comedy potential between Landon’s parents seemed to balance in some ways the portrait of the mother. Had it been over with the previous strip (588) it would had been still good.
But with the present comic, it appears clearly that Harriet has been clearly constructed as a Hate Sink (for references: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HateSink), a character deliberately made to be unbearable and hateful to the reader and to represent something negative without redemption. And with this I think a lot of the enjoyment this webcomic has soured away.
Okay, if I had been there she wouldn’t have walked away from that…
You NEVER destroy a work of art. You may lock them away, cover them, never show them to anyone again, but do NOT destroy them!
All I can say is, “When Landon was in Christian land… Let my Landon go…”
Seriously, I’m the kind of guy who can laugh most things off and have a pretty dark sense of humor. But this? There’s nothing funny about abusive relationships of any kind.
She should be glad that it’s not me that she’s trying to do this stuff to. Free will and independence are among my most valuable possessions and, in my eyes, she’s flat out imprisoning her son in his own life.
@ Egomane:
There is a difference between being a faithful believer in a religion, and a psychotic zealot that things the only way to purify the “unclean” is to destroy.
Every religion has both types of people, so nobody reading this take it personally.
Oh, she did not just.
@ Gap343:
You are a liar and a fool, and if you think reading your evil book back to you is corrupting it, you are insane as well.
@ Philosophy&You:
“Oh, you defended yourself! Clearly you’re at fault!”
That is basically what you said. It is stupid and we are all dumber for having read it. If that’s your only argument, you are too stupid to get involved. You should be ashamed.
@ Wildlebendes:
Every so often there’s a Sandra and Woo strip that really isn’t funny. THe two bobcat cubs crying over the dead body of their mother, and now this. I like to think the cubs were brought to an animal shelter, they’d better have been. As for this . . . divorce. Now. Dad gets custody, and Harriet gets a one-way bus ticket out of town, out of state, country, hemisphere!
@ demarion:
I’d say she should be sent to a place filled with like-minded Christians, but where are we going to get a time machine?
Yes, destroying the birthday gift painting was horrible, but she goes on to do something even worse: The woman threatens to beat her only son just for being with someone. Harriet looks like she could do some real physical damage, aside from the sheer mental trauma of your mom beating you for being happy. This woman is just pure evil. She’s also in for a world of hurt if people from the strip find out, Sandra’s father has a strong sense of justice, seen when he locked Woo’s previous owner in the cage. Larissa is fiercely loving of Landon. But the one worst for Harriet would be Cloud’s mother. She is a woman that didn’t expect to live long enough to have & raise kids & here is Harriet spitting in the gift of Motherhood? Yeah, I think she would have words with her…
OK! That’s EVIL!
That was his Birthday Gift from his girlfirend!
This comic has just jumped into full fledged child abuse!
You’d better figure out a way to pull this out and fast.
@ Preadatordetector:
Actually that wasn’t planned. I was simply thinking something along the lines of “You know how they tell you “If someone strikes you upon the cheek, present them the other? Well, my Faith DOESN’T. So try striking ME”
@ Egomane:
sadly, your question can be answered in the Old Testament. it was violent and vengeful as hell.
Rather fitting, thanks internet:

It’s not. Unfortunately it is right on line with being the very kind of self righteous hypocrites that Jesus preached against.
I am hopeful for the life lessons that this will bring to the comic, but worried all the same
I don’t often comment on this webcomic, (in fact I think this is the first time I’ve done so) but I have got to say, I have disliked some characters before, but I think that Landon’s mom is the worst. The absolute worst. She is more concerned with keeping her son within the constraints of her own personal and religious ideals than having him be happy and free to make his own choices. For him, dating Larisa might be a mistake. Or it might be the best decision of his life. (I’m hoping for the latter, personally.) But either way, he would doubtless learn and grow from the experience, and his mother is denying him that. Possibly even worse is her threat of physical violence if he sees her again, which I’m hoping is just hyperbole on the part of the writer to make the situation seem even more ridiculous, because of it isn’t, this lady is even worse than I originally thought. (wow that was a long comment. Sorry for going off on a rant, people.)
Though it’s been said, many times, many ways: Powree’s awesome.
@ Egomane:
Short answer: it’s not.
that boy is soooooo fucked
@ Avian Mosquito:
Oh amen I feel ya brother….right between your buttcheeks.
You’re comments are exactly why I cannot stand atheist internet fascists. You claim no belief in God, yet you and your sort feel the need to attack anyone who does. If you don’t believe in something then technically it shouldn’t offend you. Of course that’s logical thinking. Yours seems to be about hatred and intolerance.
@ Crystalgate:
I agree.
I think she is using faith as a cover -which makes this all the worse- for her own insecurity at seeing her little boy in love with a girl who seems fundamentally different from her in every way. Of course I suspect she would have disapproved of Larisa even if she’d been a Sunday School girl with a biblical quote for every occasion. Clearly she disapproves of her boy being with any girl…Larisa’s free spirited ways simply give her an excuse to use her faith as a weapon.
Harriet, that’s not living by God’s word, He would give you a thumbs down.
I would not worry though, I suspect it will all work out somehow if the two of them find some common ground….like for instance the love they have for Landon and his happiness. That and I hope Larisa or her husband really rips into her ass one good time first.
@ Carl W. Roden:
Excuse me? Last I checked, when an organization has a history of KILLING outsiders, that alone warrants any level of hatred that can be mustered. And when a member of that group insults every non-member in all existence, that warrants hatred on a personal level. If you’d go back to page 1, where I first game in, you’d find that I started off in response to one “Agustin Amenabar L.”, who took Egomane’s harmless, if very sorely misinformed, comment as an opportunity to attack all six billion non-Christians on the planet.
But you don’t care about that, do you? Why let facts get in the way, right? And that is, of course, why we’re having this discussion.
Are you forgetting something? I was not raised an atheist. Most atheists were not raised as atheists. I was raised as a Christian. I went to Christian schools during my early childhood. They never let me read the bible there, it was only after I left that school that I got an opportunity to. And it was YOUR holy book that made me understand what your religion really teaches. I read the entire old testament twice and the new testament once.
I know more about your religion than you do, likely more than you ever will. And if you want to claim to be a Christian and support your religion’s tenants, then you need to read your bible and find out what those actually are. But, of course, you’re not going to do that. Because you aren’t *really* a Christian, you never have been and you never will be. You don’t follow your religion’s tenants, and have no right to claim to be a follower. Thankfully, nobody really is.
And for the record, Harriet isn’t following her religion’s tenants here either. But only because she’s not beating Landon with a rod. (Proverbs 13:24, 23:13-14 advocate child abuse. They order you to beat your children with a rod as “discipline”.) Of course, there’s more than that. The bible is extremely misogynistic. Everything from Genesis 3:16 to 1 Peter 3:1 is misogynistic. So since she doesn’t prostrate herself to her husband, she’s not following those tenants either.
Remind me again how you people are supposedly better than me, for defending this evil book you haven’t read? It’s basically those terms of service you sign without reading, only in this case it’s blatantly evil when you read it and you’re claiming it’s not without looking into it.
@ Tatsurou:
Oh, I wish. I doubt it, but I wish.
It’s an eternal mystery to me why a man would stay married to a controlling bitch like Harriet. I’d rather have my son away from her malignant influence than hang around one more minute. She’s just using her supposed Christianity as an excuse to be pissy in the name of God thinking that lends weight to it. It sure would be a shame if she happened to catch on fire.

not necessarily, remember the strip ‘russian revenge’? Larissa can be REALLY creative when it comes to revenge! only one thing is sure – harriet WILL regret this!

Fundamentalist Christians aren’t allowed to divorce. (Not that that stops them.)
@ Avian Mosquito:
Love hurts.
Also, everybody please remember that God -assuming He exists- is THE eldritch horror, so any motives ascribed to Him are really our own.
Okay, it’s set in stone. I seriously hope with all hope I can invest in this comic that Larisa sets Harriet on fire.
@ Avian Mosquito:
Although I am not a Christan myself, I have been friends with half a dozen of them for five years.
In just a few posts I have seen more hatred and intolerance from you than from all of them combined.
For someone who despises intolerance and hatred, you seem to possess quite a bit of it yourself.
@ AntiDragon4185:
You don’t know any actual Christians. None of them follow the tenants of their religion if you were even able to associate with them peaceably. I don’t know any actual Christians either, just a lot of idiots trying to claim a title they don’t qualify for or even understand. Which is a lot better than an actual Christian, as an actual Christian is definitionally a murderous, slaving, misogynistic child abuser. Even the scumbags who use the Christian faith as an excuse to hate women and gays are better people than actual Christians, because at least they aren’t murderers or slavers.
The bible is an evil, disgusting book. It is morally indefensible. And the new testament was fabricated by roman politicians in the Council of Nicaea, so we have NO FUCKING CLUE what Jesus Christ might of actually said if a man by that name ever actually existed.
And make no mistake that my hatred is directed primarily at the bible. With “Christians”, I’m really just frustrated. Do they know what that word means? It’s like people calling themselves “psycho” when they’re really just loopy, or “gangster” when they just have bad taste. And then they get defensive over the book they never read and the violent propaganda contained therein. There IS no soft, lovable Christianity full of happiness and sunshine and love. Associating those things with it is like associating health and longevity with cyanide poisoning.
