[0594] “Pay To Win” Was Yesterday!
└ posted on Monday, 30 June 2014, by Novil
- Sandra the Brave: King Richard, I killed the evil orc bandits who terrorized Oakdale!
- King Richard: Marvelous! Now there’s just one final little task for you to do to receive your knighthood.
- Sandra the Brave: What am I supposed to do, Your Majesty?
- King Richard: Do you see this huge pile of dirty dishes?
- Game screen: RICHARDSOFT – Sandra’s Quest (BETA) – Enter activation code to continue:
- Sandra: I hope these “Do chores to win” games will never catch on!
- Richard: It’s the start of something huge, I’m telling you!
Clever. This actually might work, as long as the parents actually knew what they were doing when they came up with the activation codes. Possibly one of the few ways that I might clean my room without complaining.
So… anyone up for trying to reveal the secret that is almost certain to be hidden in the activation code?
WELP! This sure was an awesome strip to have posted on my birthday! XD
Sandra is actually a great sport for actually going along with this! I don’t think many people would bother…they would see “do dishes” and see it as the game ending credits…
Forced level grinding reduced to its fundamentals… …or the usually unseen side of Cooking Mama?

There is currently none. But that’s a good idea and I will create an updated version tomorrow.
Sneaky Gaia reference I see, haha.
You see, I’m a lazy jerk who loves video games, but if my parents used a tactic like this I would probably do things all of the time.
Oh, don’t worry, Sandra. Even if they do and parents buy it for their kids, they’ll NEVER play them. Thus, they will fall out of the market.
Does stealing the activation codes from Richard count as pirating the game?
DO WHAT YOU WANT ‘CAUSE A PIRATE IS FREE. YOU ARE A PIRATE!!

Methinks we shall see more comics tagged ‘Gaia’.
And then all the lazy kids learnt to reverse-engineer software to crack the codes, and the world entered a new golden age of computer science.
So were the evil orc bandits in Oakdale an euphemism for something else, like rats in the basement, or that neighbor who keeps borrowing their garden equipment and then never returns them?
AVGN will never approve of this!
Also Sandra’s Quest? Hmmmmm
@ exterminator:
AAAAAAARG! Drink all day Drink all ninght! Wash the poop deck and walk the plank!
That’s actually a legit thing. There’s a website that turns chores into a roleplaying game of sorts. Here’s a link: http://www.chorewars.com/
Do remember the old code setup in the older games. Too bad barely see any codes for games now days. Last code setup I remember was on Pokémon X that was really useless.
So is this “Oakdale” in any way related to Lilith’s home village in Ileasaar over in the Gaia comic? Maybe Gaia actually became a videogame in Sandra’s universe (the “Wooiverse”?). Or maybe Novil just likes the name “Oakdale”.

Done. But it’s nothing fancy.
Sandy, you and cloud will do this in the future as well so might as well practice

Read the “Pigeon NURP 40 TW 194” Section, and you’ll see that the cipher text start with the autentication code Richard is holding.
Me thinks I would never reach knighthood…
That got a laugh out of me today. Nice one.
I seem to recall having an Ice Age game on my Gameboy Advance that ran on the code system – by the third level I managed to reverse engineer the code system and cheat myself a “golden acorn” achievement that had been giving me trouble…
I had forgotten that Richard was a software developer.
‘/\/\\/\/BA’ ‘Thirty dollars have been transferred to your account’
Huh chevrons don’t carry, ah well. Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A.
What else hmm….
L, R, Start, Select for resetting day.
X, A, B, Y to open Any door.
L, A, R, A to turn any machinery on/off.
Spam A for extra school credit.
@ Novil:
Its a pigeon!
Man, this comic has been pretty hilarious lately.
I find it funny to have to do chores in order to play video games that are nothing but chores (FarmVille, RuneScape, et al).
@ Kaigakoi:
Is it really your birthday? Mine too! That´s awesome.
Hey have anyone ever noticed how Larissa looks like sam from icarly “neckelodeon”
Clever! I think my mom would do that too…. BUT FOR ACCESSING THE INTERNET.
Her in game avatar looks so cute. 🙂
“There is no cow level.”
I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one that tried to add this game on Steam 😀
Just how many dishes does it take to feed two (plus a mooching raccoon)?
…
And I don’t think Sandra’s dad would let that many dishes pile up through a day.
Oh, yeah. Her dad is a programmer. This make total sense.

Let’s take into account the nature of the residents in this household. Or at least their daily lives.
Richard is a programmer and is thus, fairly busy. Between deadlines and personal projects, his schedule is probably very full, meaning that he could easily forget about housework.
Sandra is a middle school student. Between maintaining her social life, time she’s at school, and times she’s doing homework (which would seem to be a lot since she seems to be in pretty advanced classes) as well as her natural unwillingness to do chores (natural for someone her age), she would either forget or neglect her chores.
Woo is a raccoon. I don’t think I should explain why he wouldn’t do housework as Richard probably doesn’t expect him to.
The dishes probably don’t pile up in one day, but after several. Which is kinda gross.
Conclusion: North family should consider investing in a dishwasher.
@ arank11:
I thought of that too. I still resent being pegged as a Paladin.
@ Puyon:
A dishwasher? That’s cheating!
@ Junk Paladin:
Yep! Really is! That is cool! Lets start a band or something…? XP
Did anyone else try HabitRPG (https://habitrpg.com/)? 🙂
So…Richard is working for Capcom or something like that ?!
That’s a lot of dishes for just two people…
@ Deko:
No He works for LJN.

“For the next quest ye must cleanse the royal Van, then slay the mighty dragon raccoon beast woo by De fleeing and pouring holy water on him.”
It’s the second comic Sandra’s got some very odd eyes… is she getting to that “awkward” phase we all hated?…
