[0649] Straight Outta Camden

- Sandra: I don’t want to be rude, but: Where’s all your furniture?
- Luna: We had to leave everything behind when we had to leave our old apartment in Camden in a hurry.
- Sandra: Camden, New Jersey!!
- Luna: Yes, we lived there for six years.
- Sandra: I’ve heard murder is now officially recognized as a natural cause of death in Camden.
- Luna: Oh, it wasn’t that bad actually.
- Luna: Except for that one time when a crackhead broke into our apartment, stole our money, and killed mom… which made dad fall into a deep depression.
- Sandra: Lovely.
Oh shit…
Shit, that got dark in a hurry. 🙁
Well that escalated quickly…
I think this girl is too traumatized to realize how bad she has it, or maybe if not accepting that reality is the only thing keeping her together.
JESUS CHRIST! somebody give that girl a hug for the love of God! X”C
Luna must be inhumanely strong (mentality wise) to not break down after such life experiences…
I mean… damn!
So it wasn’t THAT bad, then.
@ Luke:
They say perspective is everything…
Why does her face remind me of Tintin so much?
Huh. It still says New Jersey in the German version.
Not entirely sure why it’s surprising – it’s not like the comic is vague enough that it could be set in Germany.
For the most horrible moment I thought she meant Camden, London.
So it could be worse.
@ Walrusz:
The nose and the dot eyes, most likely.
Uh? Gee this just got serious.

Don’t you mean de-escalate? As in going down hill?
..okay..wow..at first I thought it was just going to be a jab at New Jersey, then mother murdered out of ‘nowhere’. Dear god, now I’m suddenly feeling guilty for chuckling when she was being bullied over wearing the same clothes pretty often. Hopefully this will lead to something heartwarming later, but..damn, did not see that coming.
My god… Lana has had it rough…
@ spiritwolf15x:
Luna* My bad…
At least she died of natural causes.

Actually there’s quite a number of things why this comic, as it is written, could not be set in Germany. I can see however how someone would have to live in or next to Germany to get most of them.
I didn’t want to say it but I thought it would be something like this. It’s always the ones that walk off bullying that bear the kind of pain most can’t even comprehend. That’s just part of experience… and repression at times. I hope things change for her.
I do wonder where they want to go with this storyline. I can think of a few directions, but am not sure about any of them.
well…shit..at the same time i feel sorry for her but also..way to say it so calmly o-0
@ Switch Master:
…it’s a reference…
Most Dangerous Cities in the United States:

Camden, NJ is #1 on this list.
My hometown is #25.

Raccoons are only found in the wild in North America given they are a New World animal. Right from get get go there was no ambiguity of it being set in Germany.
@ roguebfl:
Incorrect. Raccoons have been introduced into Europe and Germany is overrun with them as is Japan. Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raccoon#mediaviewer/File:Raccoon-range.png
Nobody will dare bully her from now on.
If they try they WILL reap the whirlwind!
yep, even when I was a kid in the 70’s (stop laughing). And even then we knew the urban areas were as safe as a mine field on D-day. Not to sure about the not so urban parts…piney woods and all that you know.
Boy, Luna is just a breath of fresh air.
Aw mannnn. I just want to pick Luna up and hold that little sweetheart so tight! I really hope her Daddy’s a good man. If he isn’t I might not be able to follow this story line any longer without bawling my eyes out. Seriously this kind of thing just tears me up.
Well, it escalate rather depressingly…..
@ J:
Atlanta is #29! REPRESENT!
@ TachyonCode:
Yeah, I mean, it definitely could have been worse.
Like maybe if she- …no, that’s not worse.
Or perhaps if the robber had instead have- … Nope, that idea isn’t worse either.
Or maybe if-
… Yeah, it couldn’t have possibly been worse.

Actually Raccoon in Japan is pretty different. They are complete different altogether. First of all in Japan they are called Raccoon-Dog (Or Tanuki) and their genus is Canidae, so they are closer to dogs.

Mine’s #18, thought it’d be lower on the list.

Yeah… NEVER make fun of poor people. People who shove chocolate up their nose, yes. People who can’t afford clothes, NEVER.

I’m not sure that’s how it works. I guess I don’t know that it isn’t, never having gone to a “normal” school, but I don’t think circumstances of the victim affect bullying patterns.
Jeez, Camden has an international reputation as a hell-hole? Camden?
Admittedly, it’s got the highest per-capita violent crimes rate of any municipality in these United States, but the incidence varies big-time from one neighborhood to another.
North Camden? Cramer Hill? Anywhere the local National Socialist Democrat American Party (NSDAP) politicians had planted subsidized and low-rent public housing projects? Yeah, they’re the places where you get your car stolen, your home invaded, and you’re likely to become collateral damage in a battle over drug turf or suffer cerebral hemorrhage as a “knockout game” target.
Parkside? Not so much. “White Fairview?” Peaceful and safe. Not even in “Black Fairview,” no matter how close it is to Pollocktown.
Not surprisingly, the rates of violent crime track in lockstep with the density of “on-the-plantation” obamavoters. Get beyond Camden city limits – i.e., beyond the grasp of Camden city politicians – and the transition from devastation to stability and relative prosperity is like magic.
Oh, yeah. If you really want to take your life into your hands, wander into those “Gun-Free School Zones” around Woodrow Wilson High School or Camden High, where the exuberant youth can be absolutely certain that law-abiding people are reliably disarmed.
Hey, I found on this more recent list that Camden, NJ is #3 behind East St. Louis, IL and Flint, MI. My hometown is #44, Sapphire225’s is #29, and BarGamer’s is #28. My hometown must have had a slow year.

Poor Luna. 🙁
Someone give this girl a hug!

No, the raccoon dog is a Japanese native that has also been introduced to Germany. However, some deranged sort thought that raccoons would make good pets and started selling them in Japanese pet stores. With all due respect to Woo, raccoons make terrible pets once they are sexually mature and so bunches of ‘pet’ raccoons got let loose in the Japanese countryside where they, as most alien species do, became really serious pests.
I feel like this is not the last we’ve seen of Zoey in this arc…
@ Tucci78:
So full of ignorance, this one is. It hurts to even read this thoughtlessness. Let me guess, these are all “whitebred” areas, where no one is black, and everyone is uber-rich. How fucking dare you! You do realize that crime is bred from desperation- people trying to escape poverty in one way shape or form, right? Or at least that is “blue-collar” crime. And those conditions? Caused by the Greedy Old Racist, Misogynistic, Homophobic, Puritanistic, Misinformed Party (GORMHPMP).
And Luna now has one of the saddest back stories I’ve seen for a comic character. Poor kid. :'(
my hometown is #47 in dangerous cities
Lovely………
Wow….And I thought I was mad about her being bullied before…This just breaks my heart. Poor Luna…Girl needs a hug, lots and lots of them. Though I may be biased with the name, because it’s the name I want to use for a daughter, if I have one >.>
Ya its official the theme of this arc is to make everything depressing as hell.
Ya its official the theme of this arc is to make everything depressing as hell.@ Qohen:
Yaaaaa best to just leave her alone on that
You know what really sells it for me? Sandra’s expression. In this situation, I’d expect and would not mind Sandra’s creeped-out and-or flat deadpan expression. But instead, her expression remains the same, she keeps *looking* at Luna. In this situation, there’s no time for a quick laugh for the readers, just a hasty bit of sarcasm. She is 100% percent serious here, and I love it.
Let’s go, as we say, correct the (profanity here) out of everyone in the comments section.
ON EVERY PAGE!!!!!!
I hate it when that happens.
