[0654] Workshop Invitation
└ posted on Thursday, 29 January 2015, by Novil
Today’s comic may be a bit dull, but I needed it to setup the following story arc. At least the facial expressions are funny.
- Larisa: Luna, on Saturday I’ll be holding my annual workshop on the topic “Fire – Theory and Practice.” Are you in?
- Luna: I–
- Larisa: Excellent! Here’s the preliminary program. It goes from 8am to 8pm, with a half-hour lunch break.
- Larisa: Flintstones, torches and matches will be provided. But you can also bring your own material.
- Larisa: Please be on time. We got lots to do!
- Luna: Wha–?
- Sandra: Just accept your fate. I have to go too. “To brush up on my knowledge.”
Also provided: one flame thrower (and fuel)
I really want to know, is this legal? Or has Larisa been doing these workshops secretly over the years?
@ ieatapples:
Not even Tor is aware of her
Will they sing Disco Inferno by The Trammps or Fire by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, as they sit around the camp… er, fire? Inferno? Holocaust? >:=\>
Special guests include the Human Torch, Natsu Dragneel, Jaya Ballard, and Mako.
Fire burns clean the evil in men’s hearts.
You certainly got the bewildered look down. Hehehe.
dull? with Larissa saying “Fire” and Luna looking like that? never!
@ ieatapples:
Probably legal.

They’ll be covering Def Leppard’s Pyromania album. And Rammstein’s Feuer Frei.
This is going in an interesting route.
On the topic of today’s comic: I can’t imagine Larisa leading a workshop, though I guess with enough passion.. who’m I kidding, my bet is on the fact that there’s nothing left to burn at around 2pm.
On one of the polls I saw: Whoa, I’m pretty sure you’re not allowed about what you selected on one of the polls but I think in this case I can. On the poll “Which form of media do you prefer” I was unable to select one. There’s movies that I really like, for example “Frozen” or “The men who stare at goats”, there’s literature (or web-serials like “Worm” or “Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality”) that I really really like, then there’s Music, where I like Queen, Genesis, Bonnie Tyler, Foxy Shazam and a lot more, comics that I look forward to on a daily basis (I only read webcomics to be honest, I’m not sure if the MAD Magazine counts but that would be the only one I read offline) and the last option, video games, well, I spend at least two hours playing every day and wouldn’t want to miss them.
In the end I was unable to select one answer over the other and didn’t vote.
If this is the wrong spot to comment on polls, sorry. (^_^)

It’s pretty much legal. Since it only taught how to make and use fire. She’s not advocating for making firebombs. Also since Flamethrower itself is quite legal in most states.

It also clean everything else….
@ Futschi:
Yeah, the votes are too narrow. A lot of us various kind of genres and types. Making it hard to choose.
@ Greenwood Goat:
No.
But there WILL be a special screening of the classic movie
“Quest for Fire” following the workshop.
.
This was funny, but a bit disjointed from the last one. I wonder where this could lead…
Oooo, maybe they’ll accidentally set the building on fire and it’ll turn into a really dramatic “save each other’s lives” storyline. Possibly some Ben and Theo action! Plus, if it runs until March, you could have a fiery background for comic #666 (mitt Romney and Ron Jeremy included because it’ll be their birthdays that day)
The last panel, Luna reminds me of Osaka from Azumanga Daioh!

I would wait a bit longer before calling it disjointed. 😉
And I can vividly imagine Larisa sitting at a table pulling a Mr. Burns “Excellent!” upon revisiting her plan for that day.
Also a workshop on how to correctly build and light a fire using tinder, flint and steel can be really fun!
Finally @AckAckAck: Chiyo-chan definitely has that stunned look down as well! As well as, if maybe a bit less often, Yukari and the other two members of the Bonkura-trio, Tomo and Kagura (Yay, Kagura!).
You need 12 hours to explain how to set things on fire?!?
And is Larissa going to give reasons more logical than “Because I felt like it?” in the lecture on “Why We Set Things On Fire…”?

………………..
Are you implying that Ben or Theo going to hook up with Luna? Hmmm interesting…
@ Orlah Ehontas:
12 hours is not just for learning to start a fire. But also “Destroying evidence 101” “Escaping police 202” and “Going underground until the heat cool down 101”
I found this web comic on Tuesday….as of Wednesday night, I am caught up, and its awesome.
They can also listen to Fire Woman by The Cult. I personally think such a workshop could actually be fun.
Orlah Ehontas wrote:
No, no. You need less than 12 seconds to explain how to set things on fire.
You need 12 hours to explain every method of setting anything/EVERYTHING on fire.
If Larisa is one thing when it comes to fire, it is thorough!
@ Greenwood Goat:
don’t forget “The Ring Of Fire”

How about http://youtu.be/eFTLKWw542g ?
I just love Luna’s face on the last panel………..
*Survivor theme music not included, but welcome.
So, is Larisa going to burn down Luna’s house for insurance or something?
@ Jerry:
An old friend went to see Quest for Fire, expecting to see Chariot of Fire (they were in theaters at about the same time, and was very confused to see Rae Dawn Chong. 🙂
Also: The Doors, “Light My Fire.”
I’d pay for that seminar. I’d wind up on a watch list, but I’d go.
Somehow, “Accept your fate” in anything involving Larisa should start the ominous background music playing. Ask Brandon . . .
I did it! I caught up in just two days. Every time I thought I might get bored or it’d turn into a gag strip, there’d be a new perk, a new development, and hey there’s actual story arcs. Overall, I’m glad I stuck with it. Thank you, creators. I shall follow dutifully.
@ ieatapples:
Well, I guess if she has it written down as a fire-safety/and or survival guide thing, it might be ok?
@ Bree:
There is also the discussion about overcoming the Challenges presented by Fire Retardent Chemicals peremeating the articles to be incinerated.
AckAckAck wrote:
The fire does that for you, the fire does that for you, and since the the fire destroyed the evidence and prevented the police from finding you, the fire eliminates the need to go underground, so again, the fire does it for you.
I don’t mind at all if a strip is “dull” because it has no joke or anything. Stories are something I quite like and most of my favourite ones aren’t funny.
Also I think I started to read this comic because it was sweet. I read qwantz because it’s interesting. Gunngerkrig for the story…..actually I don’t read any comics for their jokes now that I am looking at it. Goblins I guess is the funniest one I read, but it’s story based as well.
8am to 8pm with only 30mins lunchbreak?! This is worse than my job :O …I get 2x30mins for the same time 😛
Nice. I need not know more.
Lol Firestarters BBQ advertisment. That’s perf!
Thisguy wrote:
Don’t forget Recca Hanabishi…
As a pyromaniac, I find the strip quite entertaining.
. . .
I still remember it raining flaming boards for fifteen minutes.
best to bring about a 100 fire extinguishers & a fire truck to that workshop just in case
@ shadowmoon522:
Nah. Larissa can control it. Fire likes her. Fire loves her. Fire in her heart. Fire in her soul.
Wait… what were we talking about?
Can we have a mother got shot situation a very long comma instead reboot to make this fall back into a happy ending?
At this point I don’t see a real exit point on a badly started story.
Shawn wrote:
Yeah, well Shortpacked readers didn’t expect the comic to end in Soggies, especially not the way it did. So give the author a chance, will you? Besides, not all stories have happy endings.
@ Crazy Roth:
Why suddenly bring Shortpacked? That comic is a mess from the get go.It’s just a mouthpiece for the writer and it lost its sense of storytelling direction in the middle of the comic. At least DoA is still better in making a good coherent storyline despite the large number of cast.
@ AckAckAck:
>.< NO! SHORTPACKED WAS GOOD! YOU TAKE THAT BACK!!!!
I finally got to the end of the strips so far! Woo!
( See what I did there? >:) )
Oh hell yeah! I’d pay to attend to Larissa’s seminar. I’m pretty darned good at starting fires … yep!
At the very least, knowledge about how to light fire and sustain fires is very useful to know in a survival situation! :3
