As a programmer I can only say:
This is NOT a cliché!
- Richard: Dinner’s ready!
- Sandra: Pizza again?!
- Richard: “Again”?? But we’ve only had pizza twice this week…
- Richard: Don’t you want a coke?
- Sandra: Oh God, no!
- Sandra: Having a programmer for a father really has its downsides.

What downsides? I wish I had pizza that often.
Can’t have lobster every night kid

Ha ha! That does remind me that Sandra and Woo is set in the USA (…right?), so it is in fact strange that Sandra and Richard eat pizza with forks.
Personally, as a programmer, I can confirm I don’t like to cook, but I do tend to get sick of eating the exact same thing all the time.
Really? No more zoey/michelle? I mean i get the joke but i expected a follow-through at least…
“But we’ve only had pizza twice this week…”
Said on the third day of the week…
And as a child of a divorced dad programmer, I can say from experience the only way to have decent food in the house is to cook it yourself.
And they don’t just like pizza. They’re also fans of ‘just add water then heat up’ food.
I thought the phrase was “basic foodstuffs”…?
Also programmers in Australia don’t eat pizza, as it’s too expensive and time consuming to get. Either we have microwave meals, or don’t have dinner
People are missing the biggest issue with this strip.
The pizza has been cut in SEVEN slices. Who DOES that?!
NOOOO, where is the continuation of last week’s comic?
don’t tell me that was everything!
Ice Cream Sandwich for desert?
Not just programmers tend to be like that. I’m IT and I tend to be that way, too… 🙂
Sandra, I was younger than you when I got tired of casserole after casserole. (Which is how people who cannot cook make everyone think they can), and learned how to cook myself, when I was 7. And my mom was a programmer. So it is time you grew up and learn how to cook.

I’m in the US. Pizza Hut does supply forks.
Most people here treat pizza as finger food, but not all.
Heck, I’ll use a fork on a chili dog if I can get away with it. (Sonic does supply a plastic fork, so, yes, I can.)
Daevad wrote:
I only use a knife and fork until the pizza is cool enough to bite into without burning my mouth. Those who drink coffee or tea may be able to tolerate hotter food more easily.
Gulp. I think my daughters would all identify with this one.
My dad is a programmer, and I don’t have such problems…
Problem I do have is that there isn’t really a lot of kinds of food in the world that I like anyway xD
So believe me, being a picky eater has an even BIGGER downside of the same kind.
@ Anon:
I know right?? I’m so annoyed
poutine and coffee seems to tbe the other half of the programmer diet where I’m from
(for those of you in foreign lands, that are saddly not Canada, poutine is french fries, covered in gravy and melted cheese curds, or in some places mozzarella is used in place of the curds)
Hey, is this strip supposed to be on the same day as its published? Cause then:
“We’ve only had pizza twice this week!”
Third meal of the week…
@ Evilbob:
Well, I do code all night and work all day.
Sandra’s face in Panel 3 is my favorite thing I’ve ever seen drawn. Kudos!
Eat healthy, be healthy.
Most programmers I know tend to gourmet cooking, but caffeine intake levels are crazy. Generally can be summarized as;
if (HeartPalpitations==false) {caffiene++;}
And yes, using a fork to eat pizza is wrong. Just ask Sophia Loren…
@ Jérôme Laheurte:
Do you sleep all night and work all day?
Oh really? I didn’t know all those folks I delivered to were programmers!
@ SmartAlec105:
Fold the slide in half along its centerline, turn it point-down, and wait. If it’s too greasy for napkins, this will get a good chunk of the excess off, and then you can try again. Or, you know, either use another napkin or go straight to paper towels.
My dad’s from Ohio (which depending on context can be considered both part of the northeast and part of the midwest) and eats hot dogs with a fork and knife. I’m from Long Island and I think that’s silly; hot dogs are supposed to be eaten length-wise in a bun, because that’s the *fun* way. But despite that, even *he* folds a slice like a proper New Yorker.
Also, if the dough is thick enough in the center that you *can* spear it with a fork like that, that’s not pizza, that’s an open-face sandwich.
And as a programmer, he shouldn’t be having Coke (or Pepsi) by default. it should be either Mountain Dew if he plans to be up for a while, or Doctor Pepper if he doesn’t (or if he just doesn’t like Mountain Dew), which are the true and proper geek sodas. If medical stuff prevents him from having one of these, or it’s too close to bedtime for *any* caffeine, then root beer, ginger ale, cream soda, or Sprite / 7Up / Sierra Mist is an acceptable alternative. If Sandra consented to a carbonated beverage, given her apparent distaste for cola she would probably favor either the ginger ale or lemon-lime, or possibly black cherry.
Kinda like my dad, except he’s an engineer and his obsession is steak+fries.
As a programmer I must say: there are a whole lot of food you can order for home/office delivery. I like pizza, but stopped eating it once I got a look at its nutritional values. Over 1000 kcal/pizza, brrr…
Zyrin wrote:
It’s called “targeted advertising.” Google must have detected that the word “pizza” appeared on this page more than once (in the comments).
Pizza may be somewhat unhealthy, particularly if it’s extra greasy and since it usually lacks veggies. Maybe Sandra is starting to worry about health or weight. But I can’t understand how anyone could get tired of eating good pizza 2 or 3 times a week.
As for Sandra turning down a Coke: I haven’t had soda in nearly 20 years now and I don’t even miss it. Carbonic acid and high fructose corn syrup, plus preservatives like sodium benzoate? Extremely unhealthy, especially in large quantities.
I’m a programmer, and I’ll often have pizza 5 or more times a week, usually for lunch. And it’s usually the same toppings each time.
But I never got hooked on caffeinated beverages, just water for me.
At least they can eat pizza everyday… *Sigh* Estúpido Gobierno Venezolano >:(
“Again”?? But we’ve only had pizza twice this week…”
But the comic was posted on a Monday.

Of course, I’m a Natural Night Owl.
On the Gripping Hand, I did once work in a programming shop that had a Jolt Cola vending machine in the lobby.
This was at a time when a number of States banned the drink because of the very High levels of Caffeine.
Of course, Those bans are Gone now.

It takes a Lot of talent to get 7 good slices.
The only real Questions is:
Which of them has a 4 Slice appetite and which a 3 slice appetite?
Did you know…
The original Coca-Cola recipe had over three times the caffiene of the modern drink.
Coca-Cola is one of the few canned beverages that contains no artificial preservatives ( Almost all contain Sodium benzoate or as I prefer to call it ‘cancer powder’)
Outside the USA Coca-Cola is made with cane sugar just like their kosher version.
~95% of the world is not the USA
Jesus, who doesn’t like a coke every once and a while?
@ D:
Actually the original formula contained cocaine. Cocaine is the way to tell $DEITY you
are too healthy and to rich.
Jérôme Laheurte wrote:
Are you a programmer and you’re okay?
@ D:
Yep, nail on the head. In my shop most of the programmers are middle aged but thin and fit. Sushi, followed by Thai, followed by Chinese is the order for lunches. Pizza happens, but it is rare and only happens when we need to order in for some reason. Tea, especially green tea, water, and diet soda are the chosen drinks.
Programming is a very sedentary job. Exercise and eat right or insulin or get another career, that is the choice all programmers have to eventually make.

Eh it’s HFCS 44 in soda. Not really all that bad. Table sugar has more fructose. Your body treats both the same anyways.
HFCS just gets a bad rap.
Not having coke with your Pizza? Sandra I am disappointed, Pop and Pizza are like Chocolate and Marshmallows! They Belong together!

A lot of people “know” about stuff through word of mouth. And people often take what a friend says at face value or gospel truth. Those who bother to “research” claims often spend no more than 30 minutes, searching either Wikipedia, Snopes, a government source, or perhaps the first 10 results on Google. Some consider such as “being thorough.” I consider such as being lazy.
Proper research takes time and effort and means unbiased reading from all sources. Try “The History of a Crime Against The Food Law” or “Sweet Deception.”
It may be time to GOTO the store instead of just CALLing the pizza place again. Or at least GOSUBway for a change.
I used to eat my first slice of pizza with fork and knife, then subsequent slices with my hands. It may have just been that I really didn’t like holding hot pizza.
Horerczy wrote:
I wouldn’t drink it with that much Cane Sugar in it Either.
Oh, and by the way, Table Sugar (Cane Sugar) is Sucrose which is a Disaccharide composed of Monosaccharides Glucose & Fructose chemically bound together.
And they are Not processed the same way by the digestive system.
The ways the 3 types of sugar interact with the body is way too complicated to get into here.

Be careful what you imagine/wish for….

Ever hear of Honey Cured Ham?
Or Jam? Jelly?
Those foods were created as ways to keep the preserved Meats & Fruits from Spoiling because most of the microorganisms that cause food to spoil can’t Live in That Much sugar.
It does help to Boil the fruits to kill off any Yeasts that might otherwise turn the Jelly into Really Sweet Wine.

Hey man, cold pizza’s the fuckin’ bomb.
