Ask Novil questions about Sandra and Woo
On our Gaia website, I created three posts during the last years in which I asked our readers to ask me general questions about the comic. Since that proved to be a quite popular format with lots of questions being asked, I figured that it may also be something our Sandra and Woo readers might be interested in.
So, if you always had a question regarding Sandra and Woo, the comment section of this news post is the right place to ask it.
First of all, why is Woo a raccoon?
Hmm, there doesn’t seem to be much interest…

Because I’m a huge raccoon fan. They are my favorite animal species. Raccoons are cute, clever and tough.
Novil, have you ever been to that Raccoon cafe in Japan or any such like it? 🙂
Have you ever considered the possibility of Sandra and Larisa dating?
How did you decide upon your comic style?
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but roughly how much time has passed in the story? Obviously, Sandra’s 13th birthday was the most recent definite marker, and that she was already 12 at the start. However, we don’t know how far she was into her twelfth year.
@ Tyler Robert Johnson:
I second this one. Passage of time is always a bit hard to follow in comics.
I`m still curious about a episode I read a long time ago. When the kids are looking for some treasure inside and old building and Larissa took some pills near Woo. What were those pills? Is this going to develop into something else? Sorry for my english love you guys <3

According to Google, that’s in Seoul and of course I’ve never been there. But I’ve been in the raccoon enclosure in a small German zoo two times.

They both like boys way too much for that.

When I was looking for an artist for Sandra and Woo, Powree was clearly the best applicant. And she’s always drawn in this style. I would have been okay with a more Western style as well.
Tyler Robert Johnson wrote:
No, she was 11 at the start. She became 12 with the start of this storyline from strip #220: http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2010/11/25/0220-priorities/

So Novil, when are we going to see more of Magical Girl Taylor?
Novil wrote:
… I’ll never be able to understand that perspective but if that’s the way they think then I suppose it can’t be helped (although it’s way less interesting and makes [0919] and [0289 make less sense] )
Are Zoe and Michelle dating now or was that just for the joke in [0709]?
Also, on a more serious note are there any plans to expand on S&W in a non digital format? Books maybe, plushies, prints, fridge magnets, that sort of thing? These days it seems that a lot of webcomic brands will Kickstart their books and paraphernalia, is that something you’d be interested for in the future or do you feel there’s not enough draw for that?

I don’t understand the question.

We tried to sell merchandise several times in the past, but the interest was very low. But I’ve been thinking about a Kickstarter campaign for a book collection about “10 Years of Sandra and Woo” next year.
Ah, Taylor was the girl in Clouds class who called him out, I just call her a magical girl because she was predominantly recognizable in the class. Also because she reminded me of Homura Akemi from Madoka Magicka.
So I have three questions:
1) Why did you stop colouring the comics? I must say the monochrome ones look quite nice too, tho.
2) Did you notice how the drawing style changed over time? Or was that intentional? Compare for example the first 100 to the canoeing/camping ark to the latest ones since the divine story. Also Larissa changed a lot since her first appearance. Will they ever go back to looking “younger” or are they doomed to get “older”?
3) Why is the homepage and comic in english even though you live in Germany, and not the other way round?
4) Will we ever see less fanservice? :p
Plus I loved the camping trip. Would love to see more like it 😀
1.Is there a possibility of Larisa going blind in the future?
2.How do you say Seeoathlaymaska (idk how to spell her name)
3. What are birthdates of the characters?
Love the comic! I’ve been a huge fan for more than two years now. Idk when. Close to the itinerary when Sandra climbed that tree to get an apple in northia. Hmmmm. I would love to see more SandraxCloud comics. Maybe a double date with Larisa and Landon?

1) There were several reasons for that:
– It became too time-consuming to have to work with two artists.
– There was no positive effect on the reader numbers despite the higher cost of paying an additional artist.
– I also wasn’t happy how the coloration with some strips turned out. It would have been necessary for Powree to alter her drawing style for the inked version to support the coloration process.
2) – Yes, I noticed it because I’m constantly checking out old strips when asking Powree to draw a facial expression or pose similar to strip #xxx.
– I think Sandra and Woo is now looking better than ever, for example because of the applied dot shading.
– Sandra & Co. now also look different because they’ve aged almost 2 years.
3) The main website is the English one because only about 5% of our readers are German.
4) Less fanservice? I think there were only 1 or 2 strips in the last 4 years that would qualify. So “No.”

1) Yes. But not in the timeline shown in the comic.
2) Ask an Aztec. 😉 Alternative spellings: See-o-ahtla-ma-kas-kay / Cioatlamacasque.
3) I don’t know. I always wanted that to be left open so that I can easily pick a date if I should ever need a specific one for a storyline.
A comment rather than a question. I’m learning German and always read the German version first to see if I can work out the words I don’t know from the context provided by the storylines and the pictures. So, thanks for providing such a great resource!

Above that should be the trops go marching. #@$%^ auto incorrect. And then I hit the wrong key.
@ Walter:
*troops
I enjoyed your auto-correct…
@ Walter:
I dunno, there was that kid that owned a massive red dog, things seemed to generally work out well for her.

1. The former regime of Myanmar/Burma used to be a recurring topic for the comic. Will the fall of the regime or, more importantly, the massacre of the Rohingya be brought up in a strip? If not, care to comment yourself?
2. If gene therapy ever sees any breakthrough IRL regarding Larisa’s genetic disorder, would that affect her situation in the comic?
What does Landon know about Larisa’s medical condition?
Will Michelle appear ever again?
Hi, good day. Sorry, I just ran across this post.
Are you planning to release any merchandise or posters for your comic?
Also, do you have any more plans for Zoey in the comic?
Oh wow.
Why “Sandra”?

And of course when did he find out?

1) I’ve been thinking about a story arc where Cloud’s family is going on a holiday in Burma. But I never really had any good ideas for it.
2) That would be hard to ignore, I guess. But I’m sure Larisa would want to uphold her deal with the devil.
Walter wrote:
Since they’ve been together for so long now, she must have told him at some point. The opposite would be hard to justify.

My first idea was Sally. But since Sally is one of the main characters in Peanuts, I wanted to use a different name. Sandra was similar, sounds good and is not associated with another very popular comic character.
Thanks for a most delightful comic. I really took fancy of the figures – animals, parents and children alike – and was so struck when I realised that Larissa had Wolfram’s disease. Then you balanced this with her forthcoming position as a succubus, which I regard as a stroke of genius. But I have four questions in relation to this.
1. Had you from the beginning decided that Larissa should suffer from Wolfram’s disease?
2. Why did you go for Wolfram’s disease?
3. Had you from the beginning planned to balance this with the devilish plan to make her a succubus?
4. Larissa’s illness has been introduced circumstantial and never really introduced as a topic in itself. It is an interesting approach for something looming so large in a charachter’s life. What made you go for that approach.
How great to be able to as these questions! Thanks in advance. 🙂
Kind regards,
Martin
Although there it was subtle since the start, why lately the comic seems to emphasize the sexual aspect? It is the creator’s decision to exploit that aspect? or is normal for underage girls to force boys to crossdress or speak so open about boy’s dick size in the author’s country?
Martin wrote:
1) Not at the moment of the creation of the character. I don’t remember the exact date, but it was decided at the latest when the story arc containing this strip ran in 2009: http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2010/01/04/0126-secrets/
2) It was a good fit: a terminal illness that doesn’t impair what the character’s able to do at the moment. I also couldn’t use anything that would have been contradictory to the strips featuring Larisa that were already published.
3) No. That was part of writing the “Divine Comedy” arc. But it surely was an obvious step for her.
4) Well, Larisa’s very first story arc dealt with her diabetes. I don’t think Larisa wants her illness to define who she is. And talking about illnesses isn’t much fun anyway. That’s seriously annoying if you talk to some old people who don’t seem to have any other topic in their life.
Reader since first month wrote:
1) They are growing up. They’ve aged two years since the beginning of the comic. So it’s just natural that they’re becoming teenagers who explore their first sexual feelings. (Apart from Larisa who has always been like that.)
2) Well, I write Sandra and Woo. Whose decision could it be otherwise?
3) Only if they’re named Cloud. Have you played Final Fantasy VII. It features an (in)famous crossdressing scene early in the game.
4) Just from my memory: In 4th grade, several of my classmates sang a made-up song to a popular tune about various sexual fetishes. In 5th or 6th grade, my classmates talked for weeks about a song about incest and bestiality. In 6th or 7th grade, one of my classmates boasted about having sex. (Nobody believed him, though.) In 8th grade, I overheard a 5th grader (“A”) who suggested to his friend (“B”) to have sex with his (B’s) girlfriend. B then replied to A to get real because she would never agree to that.
I think the girls were even more perverted. 😉 But I don’t have first-hand knowledge.

And most girls don’t have Larisa for a best friend.
Hello Novil, hope I’m not too late to ask a question, and I hope this isn’t a sensitive matter, but I have been wondering; giving all the strips relating to Gods and religion, what your take on it? Believer? Atheist? Agnostic?
