Yes, a spear is better than a knife. An atlatl is better than a spear. (A bow and arrow probably has the reach, but not the stopping power, on an atlatl, but I don’t know that. Some bows and arrows could penetrate plate mail.)
A cliff or deep pit, and a fearsome reputation probably has them all beat.
Just to brag. Humans have at least four advantages over the other beasts, any one of which would have given humans a good shot at being the apex predator.
