[1075] The Quilted Multiverse

- Yuna: There is strong evidence that the universe is flat and infinite.
- Yuna: The number of distinct quantum states that can occur in a fixed amount of space is finite, though. It’s only around 10^10^122 for the observable universe according to Professor Brian Greene.
- Yuna: Do I have to say more?
- Ye Thuza: That’s all very well, Yuna…
- Ye Thuza: But I still won’t give you 100 dollars for a wormhole machine to find a second Earth where your favorite show wasn’t cancelled.
- Yuna: Does science mean nothing to you!?
Science is good and all, but resources like amount of pocket money are always limited…
Does she actually have 10 Trillion to give? Is that actually a request that is possible to fulfill?
@ Crashguy2:
Details, details. She needs it.
…wait, since when was she limited by money?
What show was cancelled?
It would probably cost less money to just restart the show.
They could just say, “Firefly”.
Yuna’s too young for her favorite canceled show to have been Firefly.
1 week of waiting just for science joke?

That’s for Ye Thuza. They’ll find a universe where neither Firefly nor Yuna’s show were cancelled. (Well, maybe one where Firefly got five years before cancellation. And a spinoff after.)
And the tags are finally back, for some reason.
Probably My Little Pony.

Good guess
She mixing “universe” and “observable universe”. Does she do this on purpose?
(The “observable universe” isn’t infinite)
Well not with attitude, it doesn’t
YEAH! Yuna is back! I was missing my favourite character already so dearly! 🙂
@ MarqFJA87:
Novil is back from Japan. So he can use his computer and not his smartphone, only.
Personally i want a time machine so i can go back in time and start playing Overwatch earlier and get the pink mercy skin from that charity event thingy…
DAMN YOU PEAR SHAPED CESIUM NUCLEOLUS! AND YOUR STUPID TIME TRAVEL DENYING IMPLICATIONS!!!! DAMN IT ALL!!!!!
There would be a LOT of other people wanting to use the machine. From companies wanting to go to other Earths and pick up whole series that wern’t made here, to people who want to go to a world that’s one calendar day ahead to get lottery numbers, to worlds where raccoons and not monkies evolved into people. Lots of money to be made- but little of it legal tender here!
One problem with this: Locating the alternative earths among the infinite possibilities of where they could be. It would be useful for mapping the universe and colonising planets though.
Is it my imagination, or has Yuna had a growth spurt?
She’d do better with a time machine to explore alternate timelines.
I don’t know… people always seems to get upset for having their favorites shows cancelled. In the other hand, a lot of shows I used to like went on for too long and got really bad.
I’d prefer they had been cancelled.

Yes, sadly, there is a limit to the quality creativity among Hollywood writers.
Weird that she ask her mom for money. I supposed Yuna can construct any machine using a mixture of lithium, nickel, chili powder and shards of Cloud’s Princess Mononoke action figures.

Series? Lottery? Raccoons? Seriously?
Second habitable planet without population (or without population we would mind killing) would be MUCH more valuable than any show … or planets made from solid gold, for example.
I’m somewhat disappointed that no one has yet to comment on/correct Yuna’s astrophysics claims.

I prefer a good ending to being cancelled.
Hey, if it’s ‘Firefly’ I’m in for $100.

There is not much to comment on:
(1) “There is strong evidence that the universe is flat and infinite”
Yuna doesn’t say what that “strong evidence” is. It’s just one possible solution & it’s hard to prove an “infinite” universe.
(2) “The number of distinct quantum states that can occur in a fixed amount of space is finite”
Yuna wants to argue that there has to be a second earth somewhere. That might be, but in truth, quantum mechanics is just a mathematical formalism, it doesn’t describe physical reality.
In the end, we don’t know whether the universe is infinite. And since quantum mechanics has a lot of holes, I would also be careful with drawing too far fetched conclusions from it.
And of course there are no wormhole machines. And of course Ye Thuza doesn’t have 10 Trillion Dollars. This strip is sooo silly 😛
@ oledakaajel:
Yes, but that’s no fun!
just checked the comic after being absent for a few months, and I missed the kickstarter. this makes the second time that’s happened, the first being that book from forever ago that had the production sketches. novel, please tell me you’re doing ‘slacker backer’ or paypal option. I need this book in my life.

Our Yuna would never mix them up! What she’s saying is that the universe is (probably) infinite, the observable universe most definitely is not infinite, and so somewhere in the infinite universe is such an Earth, accessible across lightspeed boundaries by wormhole travel. Apparently.
@ Arent:
“Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” Attributed to Albert Einstein in Robert Byrne
@ MFvGeel:
Yep, you’d keep getting the universe with the show still on, but with a different actor playing your favourite role.

Ernest Rutherford was much cooler:
“A scientific discovery has no merit unless it can be explained to a barmaid.”
-> That’s because serious physicists do physics primarily to impress barmaids.
I don´t think she needs to ask her mother for pocket change, with the kind of inventions she makes, i think all she would need to do is patent them and sell the inventions around the world and she will have all the money she could need.
Anti gravity.. i think NASA and the military might be interested in that and if she can make a wormhole generator, well NASA might be interested in that too, same with the military.
So little Yuna will have all the money she could ever need if she started to sell her inventions… ofcourse the money won´t technically be hers until she turns 18.
But i am sure there are ALOT of companies out there who would be more then willing to finance all her inventions, if she provide them with a few working prototypes.
Nobody has yet noticed there is a plate of cookies on the table? Now that’s some breakfast!

Some of us do it because of the toys – lasers and particle accelerators, etc. – we get to play with. Oh, and to see things no one has seen before.
@ Vidad:
I’ve been known to enjoy oatmeal-nut-raisin (or dried blueberries if the poodle wants some) for breakfast. But then, I also eat cold fried chicken or bean soup for breakfast, depending on the day’s weather and what’s in the fridge.
It’s high time Yuna invented Dimensional Cable! We’ve never seen anything like it before!
…oh wait…
@ Qrez:
Tit cancer Mercy is great. Don’t play as her often, but when I do it’s that skin. It has its own special sounds.
It’s almost as nice as having Mei in her pj’s.
To elaborate on the above, wouldn’t an infinite universe directly contradict big bang theory (for which there is strong evidence via background radiation)?
As for “flat”, she’d really have to define what she means. I mean, from a very specific reference point, we can consider the universe to be “flat” on average take to the infinite. But general relativity makes spacetime anything but flat anywhere near matter, and also in most places not too close to matter, where it would simply be “mostly flat, kinda almost”.
