On the following page you can find all the info about this year’s Sandra and Woo + Gaia artwork contest which comes with $5000 prize money!
Weekah tegalega is the name of the raccoon in the language of the Dakota-Sioux.
- Spaceman Rick: There’s hardly a danger that legendary spaceman Rick has not already defied!
- Spaceman Rick: Trigger-happy zogons, lava tsunamis, fruitcake made out of pure astatine. Rick has experienced it all, and survived!
- Spaceman Rick: But nothing has prepared him for today’s confrontation with the terrible görrrl and her weekah tegalega!
- Sandra: It’s only $1300, daddy!
- Richard: When will the Intergalactic Commission finally ban the use of puppy eyes?!

Puppy eyes are evolutionary advantage…
Aw yiss. Calvin.
Sorry, but I just can’t buy the astatine part. It’s not that it’s unhealthy. It’s just extremely radioactive and explosive. Whether or not Rick can survive it, it couldn’t survive on its own for two seconds before it stopped being astatine and started being a pile of debris.

@ Jack:
“There’s no material safety data sheet for astatine. If there were, it would just be the word “NO” scrawled over and over in charred blood.” –Randall Munroe
I wish the legendary spaceman Rick all the luck in the known and explored universe so that he can survive this incoming space menace…to his wallet!
… Is “Weekah Tegalega” just gibberish, or does it have actual meaning?
I feel like “Space Ranger Rick” has a better ring to it.
But see we know by Richard Cheney that Rick is a stand-alone name. Short for Richard is Dick. Space Ranger Dick!
Spiffy.
I shall not apologize for this. C&H comics were formative childhood reading for me.

I was wondering myself …
Weekah would probably sound much like “weaker”. But Tegalega?
What kind of sounds do raccoons make?
@ Jack:
It’s a LOOONG running joke that nobody likes fruitcake because it’s hard and tastes terrible. So a fruitcake made of radioactive material is a special kind of torture. And he’s saying that that wasn’t as bad as going up against the dreaded “Puppy-Dog Eyes”.

I see you are also a man of culture.

From the author’s comments below the comic:
Will our intrepid hero find the courage to keep his ground against the insidious forces of the görrrl and the weeka tegaleega?
Why am I reminded of Calvin and Hobbes? (The comic strip, not the philosophers)

You mean there’s a difference?
Is it odd that this strip reminded me of the old game Rick Dangerous 2? (Hit YouTube and you only have yourselves to blame, folks)
@ StarPriestess:
Anybody who says fruitcake tastes bad has never tasted my mums fruitcake.
I think panel 3 is my favorite drawing of Sandra so far.
You want $1300? Sure. Let’s get you a job so you can appreciate how much work your purchase really entails. Hmm, in grade 6, you could get a paper route or become a child actress. You could volunteer at the local zoo (you do know a lot about raccoons), but that does not pay, but at least you get into the zoo for free. What do you have in mind to earn $1300?
@ Novil:
That is an absolutely beautiful burn… Apologies, but I simply must reuse it myself some day.
What I really want to know is where they found a flowering plant that produces fruit made of astatine. Never mind how they managed to make fruitcake out of it. Then the rest is just how can I stay out of that star system.
Fruitcake made of astatine? Sounds like something Yuna would make.
Those stars in their eyes . . . isn’t that the Federation flag from Star Trek?
Ah memories … when my nieces were younger, they would do that to me and my brothers. It was horrid and devastating.
Now of course those girls are in their thirties and their own children are doing the Puppy-Eyes at them, so karma was paid back eventually.
Do you ever thought about making a superhero series, Novil? You are incredible!
I applaud the homage.
“only $1300” thats a little more than I get paid in a whole month. I couldn’t fall for the eyes even if I wanted to.
Funfact: Gör is the German word for (mostly female) brat. I think Novil didn’t thought of this…

Maybe. On the other hand, at least to my ears, the “i” in “girl” sounds pretty much like the German vowel “ö” anyways. It could just be a pseudo-phonetic transcription.
@ Novil:
I’m unsure who’s actually missing what here.
I read Jack’s as being intentional, just because of how unnecessarily detailed it is.
