[1154] Calm Before The Storm
└ posted on Monday, 17 February 2020, by Novil
- Captain: Unfortunately, our departure to Tokyo will be delayed since most passengers have not yet arrived.
- Richard: Time for a nap…
- Novil: And this will happen in the next strip!
- Succubus: That poor guy! Even I feel sorry for him!
- Succubus: Teach me your ways, little devil!
- Novil: … I can teach you a lot of things!
- Succubus: Rawr!
- Novil: Over the course of a year, raccoons feed 40% on invertebrates, 33% on plant food and 27% on vertebrates.
I will forever wonder what happens in the next panel, but more raccoon facts pls

Not forever, only until next Thursday.
@ Novil:
sorry to be nitpicky but till THIS thursday…
@ Paeris Kiran:
Technically, this Thursday is the next Thursday. Don’t ask why I’m like this.

“next Thursday” is the upcoming Thursday, “Thursday next” is the Thursday after Next Thursday
Milady succubus, you’re trying to seduce a comic strip creator . . . the word you’re looking for is off-kilter . . .
Always expect garden shears!
A sucker succubus.
That’s evil, all right.
Devilishly clever.
She asked for it
@ Roguebfl:
I have checked with English, US and Australian collegues…
well… its a mess…
anyway – is Novil the “Upper management”?
@ Roguebfl:
And “Thursday Next” is a character from Jasper Fforde’s novels.

He and Powree are the Creators of this Universe.
I feel sorry for the Succubus…
@ Walter:
Novil (Oliver Knörzer) is the creator of the S&W universe, Powree is the rendering engine. Architect and builder, would probably be a decent analogy, if I understand it right.
And I see nothing fiendish about someone in Richard’s position experiencing a delay like this. He’s got most of that area to himself, a probably reasonably comfy seat, apparently copious legroom, and can even recline his seat 3 to 5 degrees from its fully upright and locked position. He could read, take a nap, etc. No screaming kids in evidence, no one pounding the back of his seat, or kicking it, and it’s not like he especially needs to worry about an “in-air mishap” because at the moment the plane is on the ground.
If I were Richard, I’d be like… NAP TIME! Or whip out the old e-reader and devour some text. THEN NAP TIME. Actually, why am I even writing this when I could be taking a nap right now? Zzzzzzzzz
Regarding Thursdays… (other comments) the easy way to avoid confusion is just use the date. I.e., Thursday, February 20th… because to some people, that’s “Thursday,” and “next Thursday” refers to the Thursday that comes after THAT. Then again, “Thursday after next” would ALSO refer to “Next Thursday”… then there’s Leap Thursday… that’s when the week has an EXTRA Thursday…
I think I’ll stick to “20 Feb” or “Feb 20″… (Actually, Feb 20 COULD refer to February 2020… the whole month rather than just one day… AAAARRRGHHHH! Just forget it!)
Now I definitely need that nap.
@ J. Craig:
For clarity, I’ll add this: Leap Thursday is when you think it’s Thursday all day Wednesday, so then when you wake up on Thursday thinking it’s Friday, OH GAWD, it’s not… it’s Thursday, AGAIN… like GROUNDHOG DAY! NOoooooO!
“Put your little hand in mine….”
@ J. Craig:
What’s fiendish about his situation is where he wakes up, I expect…
How many people checked the math? I did and thought it was wrong, then noticed that I misread the 27% as 2%.

Unless Novil plans something else for next two strips …
How we all feel when it’s a raccoon heavy arc!
…And a colony of the little rascals was established in Germany by Kaiser Wilhelm. They are known as “wash bears”.
It’s a conspiracy against Richard, someone even switched his plane! Before his nap, the row next behind him had two seats (taken), and 3 when he wakes up 😉
Well, dear succubus, you wanted to know his EVIL ways. First thing you should know about it, Evil – more precisely, the succesful evil – isn’t enjoyable to it’s targets. Sometimes not enjoyable to the practicioner itself neither!
So, consider really carefully, that when and how to use it!
