- Powree: Since Novil is unfortunately tied up with other matters, I’ve not only drawn today’s strip, but also written it. I hope you like it anyway.
- Sandra: Heads up, Woo! I found a replacement writer! The new script has just arrived.
- Woo: Awesome!
- Sandra: His name is Bob and he’s an experienced fanfic writer. He wrote that he wants to explore my relationship with Cloud in the next story arc.
- Woo: I’m curious!
- Sandra: Perhaps we reported the wrong person.
I love it!
And now I want a blinking Frog hat…
BWAH HAH HAH HAH! *SNORT* AH HAH! AH HAH HAAAAH! HAH HAH *HIC* HAH HAH *HIC* HAH *HIC* ow! HAH HAH HAH *HIC*
Another year another strip suggesting that hope/optimism is for losers.
Didn’t see that coming:-O.
No, really: http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2020/01/30/1150-cat-girls-suck/
Yeah I’m sure I’m missing some context, but this strip from last year even suggests that being hopeful and striving for a better society makes you deserving of being shot (especially with Ye Thuza’ opening remark).
She should have made a comment about that won’t happen for a few years.
“Experienced fanfic writer”… yeah. Yeah, that follows.
The feeling when you can’t report someone ‘cause you’re dependent on them…
While you can get some absolute gems in fanfiction, there’s an awful lot of terrible ones you need to wade through to get to them. Thankfully recognising those terrible ones becomes easier with practise.
A foolish man’s trash can be another man’s treasure, but one’s man’s treasure can be another man’s trash.
I’m sure we’ve all got a few ideas that the characters theirin would prefer be denied emphatically.
Is that Powree, the hard working artist? Unusual hat.

And it’s not even just a blinking hat, the hat is mirroring Powree’s facial expressions. Epic hat ftw.

…?
Ye Thuza wanted to shoot someone because they were remaking a classic. This is a relatable thing that at no point suggests being optimistic is for losers. Her opening remark was meant to be a setup for the punchline, to push things into over-the-top territory.
You’re either reading too deep, or not reading far enough into it.
Antiyonder wrote:
And this… what? At what point was hope/optimism even an implied subject here?
I don’t know what he wrote, but at this moment I would take anything that it’s not “under a killing balloon”; if you would kindly end this arc, ten strips ago would be perfect…
Red5 wrote:
To be fair it wasn’t. Just that I think after ending an arc with a reminder of how 2020 sucked, just seems like overkill to do yet another “life sucks and you should abandon all hope”.
now i dont dare say im kinda curious too ….
If it had been an experienced fanfic writer then I would have expected the relation between Sandra and Zoe to be the one explored – or possibly the one between Sandra and Antimony (from Gunnerkrigg Court)
Fanfic writers exploring relations – of under age protagonist – that’ll be loads of sex. I can see why Sandra is burning the laptop!
I am just wondering why Woo is also shocked, given his past behavior regarding such issues that cannot be described as shy (for human standards) . That fanfic therefore must really be scary!
Yeah, some fanfiction authors are just digging into their own wild imaginations to tug at the soft material of stories and it can be a real lottery on the results. Especially if they take too many liberties with boundaries and hard details already established by the series (and that’s even disregarding those who just play havoc with shipping and sexual content). Yeah, if you want a co-writer, fanficcies are generally not the way to go unless they got a sky-high approval rating – and even then they aren’t to be trusted with a complete script.
“Give it a try, Sandra. How bad can it be?”
* She show me the script *
* My eyes start growing wider in ever growing shock and disgust *
“This would make Larisa blush!”
“Hello, is this Ye Thusa? We think you should know this.”
CAN WE PLZ KEEP THIS WRITER! HE WANTS MORE OF SANDRA AND CLOUD!!!! and as woo would say: “WOO!”
THANK YOU BOB!!!!!
@ Red5:
this is true. just because she said she should focus on good things in life then gets upset about a bad remake doesn’t mean the writer is saying optimism is for losers.
Oh Sandy, that’s a bit of an over-reaction*, isn’t it? – How about deleting the mail and adding him to the spam filter (if he keeps suggesting)?
… and Larissa will be so pissed you started a bonfire without her
* the burning – not the suggested reporting (just to be clear)
Hi Powree, good to see you!
Maybe it’s a joke?
Let’s start with a clean slate, shall we?
An Esus laptop? Cool. Maybe one from Ecer next?
Bob wrote:
… I though YOU are that writer.

Didn’t you meant Reca?

I think the suggestion might be that the laptop caught fire of its own accord.
(Also, yet more fanservice — albeit rather indirect — for fans of underage hanky panky).
Powree, please feel encouraged to write more strips in the future.
Also do include yourself and your marvelous frogeye hat a few times more often. Don’t let Oliver get all the fame. You can clearly see in strip 1237 where he ends if he isn’t kept in check sometimes.

Don’t get it.
@ HKMaly:
lol… ha. ha. very funny. no im not but i do like that he wants to carry out a story with more of sandra and cloud! alsoooo
MORE OF SANDRA AND CLOUD PLZZZZ!
A number of years ago, I participated in a competition to *record* bad fanfic. The contest organizers really outdid themselves in finding particularly toxic material – of which plenty exists.
this is not how powree looked back in the 4th wall breaking / meta strips from >2y ago…
can’t find them rn, if someone can remember, link please
@ Heck:
No kidding, it seems his experience comes mostly from “Lemons*.” I’d react the same way as Sandra if I had to go through something like that, I honestly think that there seems to be a lot of people (both in universe and out, mostly out) that rush into sexualizing our main human characters despite the fact that they’re in middle school and barely teenagers at most. I can understand them being horny since their starting the part of puberty where they become more sexually aware and have yet to learn how to contain themselves appropriately, but getting your preteen girlfriend rather racy lingerie (who actually makes lingerie in those sizes?!) for her birthday or sexting nude photos of you to your preteen boyfriend kinda takes it too far…

Its the same place I learned about this comic!

Albeit, she of all should know how she’s to appear here :o)
(btw. you can click on the name tag below the strip and it will show you a list of all strips tagged with that name.)
Free Novil!
Powree is so cute in her froggy cap. And she did a good job with this strip. Leave Novril stew for a while.

Another year another strip suggesting that hope/optimism is for losers.
Nope! Not even a little! And that one about Ye Thuza you quoted in a follow-up quote is also not any such thing.
The joke here is that the fanfic writer wrote something so horrible that Sandra felt the need to cleanse her laptop with fire and is wondering if getting Novil back might not be better than not getting him back. There’s no suggestion that it’s bad to hope for the future.
The joke in the Ye Thuza comic is a standard pattern: set up an expectation, then demonstrate a reality that is greatly counter to the expectation. Then a twist ending, which is black comedy: Ye Thuza is preparing an AK-47 style rifle with a peaceful look on her face, implying that she is imagining using the rifle to kill people and prevent this travesty from occurring. It’s not one of my favorite comics ever (I like today’s much better) but it’s not an angsty bleak comic.
I would like to encourage you to try considering that comics might not be as angsty and bleak as you first think they are.
@ steveha:
Perhaps, but why else has the strip been heavier on the cynicism since 2018 and up compared to 2008-2017?
2020 I suppose has been an improvement, just not sure if that will be the case this year and up.
2018 for example had 951-957 and 1026 has maybe the only positive strips of the year.
2019 had just one strip not trying to hammer in the idea that life socks in the forum of it’s final page The Aquarium (1141).
@ Ruben:
I’ll break it down for you:
In the first panel, Sandra tells Woo that she found a replacement writer for the comic (Novil being in jail right now).
In the next panel we find out that the new writer is an “experienced fanfic writer” who wants to “explore [Sandra’s] relationship with Cloud”. At this point, I immediately started thinking that the writer might want to write something sexual. (Not all fanfic writers write sexual fantasies but some do.)
In the next panel Sandra reads something, presumably the script written by the fanfic writer.
In the final panel we see that the laptop is in a barrel and on fire. The implication here is that what Sandra read was so horrible that she felt an overwhelming urge to destroy the laptop that had shown the story to her, and cleanse it with fire. Sandra says “Perhaps we reported the wrong person” which implies that she is now regretting that Novil is in prison and she’s looking for an excuse to get him released so he can write the comic again.
Antiyonder wrote:
Meant for that to be “life sucks” not life socks, obviously: -D.
@Powree: I like your froggy cap. I missed that details in http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2019/08/12/1105-catharsis/ . Now, it makes me curious. What is its origin? How did you (or Novil?) come with this idea? Do you actually wear one in the real life?
@ Anonymous Turtle:
I thought they were about fourteen-ish.
Not exactly preteen.
The lingerie was, of course, ‘influenced’ by Larisa.
I’d like a copy of the rejected script.
For, uhm… academic purposes.
Maybe the pages exploring Sandra and Clouds relationship should be written by Ian Watson, his inquisitor trilogy did a good job of exploring the more questionable aspects of the dark millennium… 40k fans will know of what i talk about 😛
@ MF:
If we’re doing S&W and GC crossover slash fic, the obvious choice is Antimony X Larisa. Annie’s flaming hair trick alone should have Larisa hopelessly smitten.
lol what if the wrighter for this webcomic actually did sum ilegal and so he is having his friend of his do the comic for him while hes in prision….lol what if the the wrighter for this is a human trafficer? lol
lol what if he kidnaps little grrls and rapes them then sells them……lol
that prob isnt true tho cuz if it where this might be a very “innocent” comic with very SUBTLE hints of other “stuff” lmaoooo
@ Phil:
The next computer will probably be from Epple instead.
