[1256] Yuna’s Immortal Stalemate Game II
└ posted on Saturday, 27 March 2021, by Novil
- Yuna: I can’t believe I managed to draw the game after blundering my queen.
- Yuna: On the other hand, you had only four seconds left on the clock. It’s easy to miss a stalemate trap in such a situation.
- Yuna: … You seem to care a lot about chess. I have to say that I find it rather dull.
- Yuna: Do you maybe want my trophy? I don’t have room for it on my shelf.
- Logan Hunter: Why won’t you just let me suffer in peace?!
I’m feeling a bit sorry for Logan Hunter.
The only way this would be better would be with tiny speech spears protruding from Yuna’s speech bubbles, stabbing Logan in the heart
Yuna is smart enough to make it seem like 100% malice.
Speaking as someone who’s been on both ends of this situation (though not at this level)… Yuna legitimately seems like she’s trying to be amicable, and just doesn’t realize how she’s rubbing salt in the wound.
Maybe I don’t know enough about professional chess, but why does Yuna get the trophy if it was a draw?
@ The Wonderrabbit:
It was stated at the start of this arc that this is a multi-game tournament in which Yuna had won all seven of her previous games, while Logan won six of his games and stalemated one. It was stated that as a result of this, Yuna only needed a draw rather than a win in order to be declared the winner of the entire tournament.
Because she’s still a child? And children NEVER let you suffer in peace – in pieces, that’s a different story…
She’s right, I find Chinese chess to be more interesting. Elephants, cannons, a river and palaces – who could ask for more from a game?
She’s right, I find Go to be more interesting. Black and white – who needs more from a game?

I agree. In fact, I think this is the first time we’ve seen Yuna really malice or evil. We see that he can be a bully.

And one day a real villain.

Earlier, she had just teased Cloud about his love for Sandra, or done childish pranks.

Or she sulked like a child.

@ goodyfresh:
Technically, in http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2021/03/04/1251-pony/ it was merely stated that Logan drew one of his games prior to this one. It may have been a stalemate, but there are other ways to reach a draw (e.g. insufficient mating material when your opponent’s timer runs out, or repeating the same position three times).
@ The Wonderrabbit:
Since each draw is counted as half a win and half a loss, the final scores for first and second place in this tournament:
1: Yuna (7½ – ½)
2: Logan (7 – 1)
I just hope that now that this chess arc is over, maybe, maybe we can have a Woo story, even if it’s only a small one. I miss that ringtail!

also agreed.
GO is a fascinating, frustrating, entirely wonderful game.
The premise behind it is almost as simple as checkers, but the strategies are utterly complex and grow every game played.
Ouch.
Another thing, Novil, what do you think about the current situation in Myanmar?

She’s not bullying the girl in the first one, she’s answering the teacher’s question and that girl just happened to be sitting next to her. It’s actually not that unusual for kids (girls and boys both) to play with dolls/action figures like Yuna is, so that’s not really a sign of future villainy. The last one is fair.
What it really boils down to is she takes after her mother a lot, Ye Thuza’s taught her things that are inappropriate for children Yuna’s age to know (see the first link), and her genius combined with the way children act leads her in scary directions at times. I don’t think we’ve seen any evidence that she’s deliberately malicious. This strip is very apropos for a child. Because Yuna doesn’t realize the harm she’s causing Logan with her words, she keeps on talking and hurting him further.
@ qq:
I beg to disagree, partly from experience. I was a precocious child, and quite smart, though naturally not of Yuna’s supernatural level of ability. And I was blind as hell for human interaction, and other’s feelings. I can completely buy that Yuna is simply childishly blind to her opponent’s feelings. I was, and I did hurt others quite as badly as Yuna here, and completely unwittingly.
As former chess player who switched to go I can confirm that go is the “cleaner” and “deeper” game. Chess is fun, sure, but Go should be a better challenge for little Yuna! Wonder whether she tries it out next…? (Maybe outside the comic, while we are not watching…?)
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, amateur here with another stupid question: are there separate timers for the opposing players in the chess tournaments?

Yup!

Huh!
Thank you.
Reminds me of KND: “Mini golf is kinda dumb… kinda dumb… kinda dumb…”
Yuna is killing poor Logan with kindness.
Nikary Flare wrote:
Each player gets a certain amount of time for the match in timed matches. That includes the time they spend thinking about a move, as well as making it. After they finish a move they will push a button on the clock and their timer stops and the other player’s timer starts. If you run out of time, you can’t make any more moves. This can result in a loss or a draw, depending on board conditions and the other player’s remaining time.
You can search for “timed chess running out of time” (without the quotes) and find lots of links explaining what happens when a player runs out of time in more detail.

“Seem” being the key word. People tend to assume that because a child is smart, they must also be mature and experienced. Which is both physically impossible. And any honest mistake the child makes, especially in interpersonal relationships, they’re accused of doing wrong on purpose because they’re “smart enough to know better”, which they really, really aren’t because knowing better isn’t a matter of intelligence alone.
Yuna is absolutely innocent and trying her best to do or say something nice.

Everything I hate about Yuna in one convienient strip.

@ qq:
I disagree. Knowledge of advanced science and engineering does not translate to emotional intelligence. These are separate skills.

It might be intended as a comical exaggeration of the typical lack of intuitive empathy that people with an unusually high talent for abstract logical thinking often have – a Sheldon Cooper joke if you will. It is hard to tell though with Yuna because she already has been shown to be nasty on occasion.
