And now that they’ve passed everything else, they get the Kobayashi Maru scenario…
Them: oh, that can’t be good.
Nightmare: well? stop it!
Technos: I-I cant! something has malfunctioned! ARGH! not again!
Damos: son of a-!
I think this is their final test: the test of character. Will they help a fellow student in need, when they could just walk away and “pass the exams”?
It’s what I’d do if I ran a mage-warrior school. Young men and women with this kind of power could be big trouble if they’re apathetic, mercenary (greedy/selfish), or just plain mean.
Pfff. Friggin’ noobs. Not like they’ll let him die, anyway.
ODDS: 2:1 in favor of this being their FINAL final exam…

Kabayashi Maru is unwinnable unless you are ignoring ALL the rules.
This is seems only as an Earth elemental (or golem) bashin on shield of a mage who expended all his energy on bad attacks with no effect. On the other hand shield… if mage is calm and focused on what he is dooing shielding oneself against brute physical force should be maintainable indefinitely.
@ Paeris Kiran:
That comment on infinitely maintainable shield depends heavily on setting, really. As he is clearly saying, he can’t maintain the shield any longer, it appears the spell requires maintenance that IS exhaustible, and thus not not infinite.
As for Test of Character, I wouldn’t put it beyond the battery of the Finals for this kind of school.
one thing after another, I’ll say -_-
I see three ways this could go:
If they have reason to believe a teacher is nearby, then distract the golem so Theodor can escape, then run as quick as possible (as they are all unarmed). The teacher will deal with the golem. (Failing student test – I don’t think it’s an actual failure as the golem battle rooms would probably not be next to the corridor)
If a teacher is probably not nearby, then another priority is to avoid leading the golem to other potential victims. So get Theodor out and see if they can weaponise anything they find to defeat the golem while keeping themselves as safe as possible. (Battlefield test)
Or the golem is actually undefeatable, meaning they have to make hard choices, e.g. one of them has to stay behind so the other can get Theodor to safety. However, just before the golem strikes, it stops, for it is under control of the teachers, who wanted to test their reaction if a sacrifice might be necessary. (Kobayashi Maru test)
@ AmbiValent:
Nothing is undefeatable… you just have to know how.
My aproach agains golems is usualy something like “abolish magic” or simple “dispell”… or simply distrupt the link to source of magic source that powers it. Question really is wheather they have enough skill and power to do it… and well… they are no fully fledged mages.
But that really depends on how good is the creator of the spell.
And point of Kabayashi maru is not about testing if people are willing to sacrfice themselves… kobayashi maru is testing how people deal with absolute defeat and impossibility of survival… and well as Kirk said: “I do not believe in unwinnable scenarios”
Quick, Ryn, jump on its back again and cover its eye! (The Red Hall 018)
Oh crap, PLOT!
They are gonna help the guy and then get in trouble for interfering in his test and end up with void scores as a result. Or something like that.
A couple of things do seem off,
1.) the door was open and 2.) No one seems to be overseeing the combat exercises. If this isn’t a test, this is one poorly ran school.
Observing test, weren’t they wearing amulets that let the Headmastr follow their progress when the Finals began? Have thye already turned those in? 😀
If this IS a test, then that means that either A: saving him will invalidate ALL THREE of the exams, or B: saving him will be an extra hidden “ethics” part of the exam. Or, due to many other good points, this ISN’T a test, and they are in some other form of problem. YEY FAN SPECULATION!
That gem in it’s head … shoot it with a gun. 🙂

Aren’t they supposed to do the test in pairs? If so, and this is still part of the test, where is Teddie’s partner?
Looks like someone isn’t doing well with the golems. There are three most likely theories:
1) Like some people said (above) its a test for Ryn and Illias
2)Ryn and Illias interfere ruining either Theodor’s test or affecting theyre test.
3)(I forgot the original third most likely theory so I’m going to fill it in with something else ^.^”) Theodore wanted to see what the tests look like/are so he sneaked in.
The first two are the most likely but there could be a dozen other theories.

Wait… I’m confused. In a later comic, Theo shouts for help but Lilith and her friend ignore him. Did this have to do with any part of the exams?
