Why do they always knock out the main hero when they can mortally stab them instead ?
And look to this new red mage. He’s hovering in an almost welcoming stance. Lillith was the second main objective : they want to recruit her. At least, that’s my guess…
What the heck? When the one guy saved his buddy there, the former-victim’s mask changed. There was a slight smile on it all of a sudden, and the eyes were no longer just glowing yellow voids, but were instead yellow eyes looking back at their comrade.
Hmm… anyone else getting the impression Red Mage Guy is offering Lilith two choices: Ilias lives/she comes quietly, or she fights/Ilias dies?
Since she’s so talented at magic and they knew enough about the school to know when graduation was and where the headmaster would be standing, and all.
Poor girl’s frozen… She’s been standing there like a deer in the headlights this whole time. Even if this attack has taken less than a minute, there’s still been some time for substantial actions by a couple of individuals. She hasn’t run, jumped into hiding, taken a shot at anybody… anything And that look on her face is fear, plain and simple. I’m afraid this is either going to traumatize her or galvanize her. Let’s hope for the latter.
I think it’s like this.
1. their goal is NOT killing. something else
2. don’t need to kill, but killing is more effective to scare people in the hall, and it can clear the place more easy.
3. killing ilias may have been also hurting a comrade. so he just faint ilias
If you ever find yourself on Illias´s place dont grab enemy like that… quicly catch his head and turn it about 180 degress around. Especialy when there are plenty more targets to capture…
It was a terrible try… only thing he could have hoped for with this attack are three minutes of choking the attacker… and that would have effectively pinned Illias to one place inviting intervention from every single attacker.
You can only dare to become stationary when you are sure your defences are sufficient to deplete any force enemy can throw at you. (or destroy it by letting it smash of your defences) but to trully win there is only one way – attack, attack often, attack hard.
Wikipedia Sez~
“The lateral vascular neck restraint (also called sleeper hold) is performed from behind by putting an arm around the neck with the crook of the elbow over the midline of the neck. By pinching the arm together while assisting with the free hand, the carotid arteries and jugular veins were compressed on both sides of the neck. This hold does not put any pressure on the airway.”
The idea is to interrupt or diminish the blood flow to the brain, leading to unconsciousness. It is apparently far quicker than an actual chokehold.
//
Also… # of untouched characters in this scene: Lilith, and Lilith only. This smells!!

ok… still a minute at minimum, not to mention a minute when a mage can be working hard to cast almost any spell with his mind. granted diminishing mind but well the apparent flaw has been blatantly demonstrated- Illias bound himself to be stationary without anything protecting his rear for too long.
General issue is students and teachers are having is that they are not willing to use lethal force, and that has prevented them from mounting any kind of resistence. Ars should have been sweeping from air at his best speed firing everything he has on attackers. That would have made him far more dangerous and difficult target than raising a shield over two students which admitedly weren´t figting anyway.
And by dooing damage he would have made sure attackers would have to devote much more resources to take him out.
At the moment attackers are winning thanks to blatant lack of any kind of overall strategy and really bad individual tactics on students and teachers side.
And well at the moment the odds are really not in Lilith´s favor, unless she makes up some real desparate spell burst of energy she is not really in possition to win… number of mages and rouges has effectively wiped the floor with all teachers but 1, most of students are panicking, cripled, or dead. And attackers are probably equiped to defend themselves at least partialy against that. Maybe if she teleported attackers away that would be something the probably do not expect.
@ Raraldor:
I understand your sentiment, and it may be true, however I would point out that EVERY other member of the raiding party appears to be wearing a mask. Most of them you can distinctly see some human skin beneath the mask. (The horned devil mask shows the mouth and teeth of the man wearing it, the Bird mask shows the goatee and mouth, etc.) I expect that the change had more to do with giving an expression to convey that the “victim” was pleased Ilias falling into a trap. It would be hard to see without pupils or facial expression. Also this guy i’s probably not the mastermind type who needs to monologue and gloat over the success.
“Haha, you fell into my trap fool!” Meh… who knows for sure

There would have been a significant risk of also hitting the attacker currently fighting with Ilias with the blade.
Not with a side slash. Ilias would be killed (maybe even beheaded) without any risk for the other assassin.
@ Bartimaeus:
Indeed, blood pressure holds (this one from behind being the main one) are much more effective than classic choke holds, any martial artist (even beginners) that knows about strokes will tell you that.
Performed perfectly, you can cut off everything going to the target’s brain instantly, resulting in the target’s complete loss of whatever strength he had. Keeping the hold can know the target out cold in a matter of seconds, instead of needing about a minute with choke holds, and the lock being more technical, one cannot break free just with raw strength, you have to know the move needed to weaken the hold first. Finally, for friendly spars this hold is better than a choke hold, since it will leave no wound or damage once broken. The target, if still concious, will be instantly as good as new.
If you add to that the fact you can actually force the target to move with you wherever you choose so, meaning you can use the target as a shield to protect yourself from outside attacks, and you have here an excellent strategy on Ilias’s part. Too bad he missed sight of one enemy behind him.
@ Paeris Kiran:
Teleport as always been a difficult and exhausting ability, specially when not targeting self. Using such a strategy here would require a lot of preparation, some casting time (she has none) and would exhaust her probably to the point of death without even knowing if it worked or not. Frankly i’m not sure what her true options are…
Damn idiot!
Those people are playing for keeps, you don’t
grapple them, you grab the head and twist with everything
you’ve got, or at least jamb the mask around so they can’t
see while you make your move.
He’s lucky he didn’t get a blade into his skull.
Situational awareness people, check your 6!
Human survivility: Rule of 3… 3 minutes without air, three days without water, three months without food.
There is one option how to defent against this hold… it requires certain inclinations of head… while it is true one neck artery will remain blocked there are few ways how to keep some blood going on. It at minimum delays the collapse, and well this was really only question of time Illias never had.But well you really need to act immediately.
These incapacitation techniques share one flaw- when enemy knows what you are dooing he can counter it. It is really just easier and safer to eliminate threat by killing. (In real life it is really moronic to do warning shots… that gives enemy too much time to act… first shot must always eliminate the threat… no warning.)
@ Paeris Kiran:
3 minutes without air is for survival, not for conciousness. If you block blood flow instead of air, conciousness is lost much faster, i experienced it many times (though only once i was stupid enough not to give up before actually loosing conciousness).
As for how to defend yourself, there’s a faster way : hit the elbow of the arm holding your neck to push it up, all while blocking the hand of same arm. That move will cause your neck to be completly freed as well as allow you to counter-attack instantly, typically by grabbing the arm and putting in the ennemy’s back to perform a joint lock. Needs some practise to use it all while being held like that, though…
If you ever find yourself on Illias´s place dont grab enemy like that… quicly catch his head and turn it about 180 degress around. Especialy when there are plenty more targets to capture…
Except that one must be incredibly strong to execute a quick neck snap like that. Most people, especially young people like Ilias, would just give the guy a nasty sprain.
@ Darth Killer:
Because. There would be no plot if that happened. Besides, haven’t you seen Disney movies? The main Characters could get killed by the villains like, a hundred times but the still get away. ERGO: The main characters literally NEVER die.
If you ever find yourself on Illias´s place dont grab enemy like that… quicly catch his head and turn it about 180 degress around. Especialy when there are plenty more targets to capture…
No, I’m pretty sure that if I did find myself in his place, I’d just run around crying like a little girl and hoping that I’m insignificant enough to not get killed. D:
Not a bad setup for Lilli to cast a quick little protective spell on the red mage, blowing him bits. This “bad guys winning” attack scene has been running kinda long for the comic’s general pace, too.
Slightly more realistically (: this is a fantasy comic , she’d have to snap out of deer-in-headlights mode, beat him to the draw, and not get killed by the rest of the bad guys. Not that any of the good guys look mentally capable of a real fight right now.
Though Alissa seems cast as a bit more sure and mature; if she could get her hands on a weapon…
anyone else notice that the only people being seriously wounded are of the older variety? Methinks this might be important.
I was thinking the same too. This might be a secret test organized by the seniors/teachers to see how the graduates react to “real” battle situation. Or maybe they just want to abduct the younger ones to brainwash and recruit them to their army.
Maybe next episode will show her boyfriend coming to the rescue, only to get disposed off immediately.
ok first of all, you all pretend the foight was going on for likew minutes, bt think about it: All of a sudden a bunch of Assasins come out of nothing. We don’t know how many appeared, but at least enough that all we saw could happen simultaniously, we as a reader don’t know but I would suspect it at least. So Lilith didn’t stand there for minutes, but just a few seconds.
Also for Illias, yes, he tries to block the flow of the blood and that goes pretty quickly. We trained stuff like that in Judo and I always ended the fight the moment someone got me like that or similar.
But he would have been smart to deck his back in some way, hue was together with ryn when the speech started, the should have fough back on back in a situation like that, or with that snobby boyfriend of Lillith or anyone around. That was simply suicidal.
In addition to a possible plot armor, Illias is clearly also holding the idiot ball for attempting a chokehold on a guy still holding a bladed weapon, WITHOUT BLOCKING HIS ARM. Any redshirt would have instantly received a blade in the stomach.
You guys really should take a look at the Setting page agan.
Remember, Soulstream is a LIMITED RESOURCE. Of course the good guys, who are seriously serious about conservation, are going to go for non-lethals. The ones who serve Bhaal have no such compunctions, and go for the kill from the start.
Re: neck-snapping, it’s a question of leverage and strength, and you need plenty of both to make it happen like in movies.
Re: bloodflow choke; definitely the thing to do if you’re busy to get someone out.
Lol maybe lilith will become alter eco lilly and save the day?
Aw, and I was hoping they’d kill him…
… Because then I’d have reinsurance in the fact that the scene was undoubtedly a malefic vision…
Why do they always knock out the main hero when they can mortally stab them instead ?

Yeah, uh… Sorry for the fuss. Trying to get in past security was a nightmare and we’re all feeling a little peevish right now.
It wouldn’t surprise me if this is just her blue stream out of control and she is just standing there screaming NOOOO!!!!
@ illeatyourself:
Well, maybe it isn’t a mask, but his actual skin? I mean we have imps in the world, who’s to say there aren’t lizard people too.
Ilias reaffirms himself as a badass yet again! Hell yeah! However short it lasted.
Look Lilth! They just cold-cocked your not-boyfriend. Zap ‘em! Zap ‘em till their blood boils!
Poor girl’s frozen… She’s been standing there like a deer in the headlights this whole time. Even if this attack has taken less than a minute, there’s still been some time for substantial actions by a couple of individuals. She hasn’t run, jumped into hiding, taken a shot at anybody… anything
