Monster 055

- Ryn: It was San who arrested Isahara, not the guard?
- Leon Barden: That’s right. San tracked Isahara down in the Silver Forest and then confronted her.
- Leon Barden: By all accounts, it was an epic battle… with both of them casting spells not seen since the Darkness.
- Alissa: Let’s pray to Gaia that San has good intentions if she’s that powerful.
- Faye Galitas: Even if not…
- Faye Galitas: If San’s able to get us out of this mess, she may eat as many children for breakfast as she desires as far as I’m concerned.
- Alissa: Faye!
- Faye Galitas: I’m just telling it the way it is. Two months ago, I believed so strongly in Lilith that I asked Xarlaxe to rescue her right before the execution.
- Alissa: What?
- Faye Galitas: But now she’s probably not much more than a weapon for a–
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.
It seems I’ve found a lost item. Did anyone drop a title around here?
I think that Eldor’s spell on Lili might have finally worn off.
So is Lilith is back and is possibly normal now. Any chance that the previous theory is right and that Lilith just broke a spell that was casting an illusion of what that town truly was and she is good. Also Sandril being alive would be cool too. So would anyone shiving Eldor in the face with staff.
Ahhh, so next comic we’ll switch back to Illias/Viviana?
A: Update on time? WAAAAAAA-
B: ARC WORD B O I Z
C: I’m both (a) finding myself agreeing with Alissa, and (b) glad to see Alissa getting some long overdue characterization. She’s mostly been the sidekick up until now; the only time she’s had in the spotlight was Red Hall 20-23, and even then Lili got most of the screen time. Every other time, she’s been playing second fiddle.
Faye’s cold and blunt rationality is absolutely beautiful, i mean i still hate san for what she did to allolistas (or something, i cant speak dragon properly) but if she is using us all, then lets use her as well, right?

Uh, this might sound creepy and awkward but Faye’s Gallitas’s Lips are VERY distracting, apologies.
Spoiler Alert: Lilith was never in fact brainwashed and crazy. They were inside an illusory space, complete with distorted spatial dimensions. (That is, she broke the spell for herself, and the onlookers saw what someone outside the illusion looks like to someone within)
D-does she regret saving Lili ? I hopes not…
That’s because you have not considered the chance that San is also a weapon for Eldor, Faye.
Or maybe you could try having a little more faith in her, Faye, given that all your “evidence” against her is circumstancial.
Hmm. I’m uncertain.
Is the last panel Lilith breaking into the room and calling Faye a monster or she has just broken the spell? And if so, is she back at the wasteland, just after getting her 3rd wish from the hag? Or is this purely figurative, an image in their head?
I’m inclined to think the 3rd interpretation is most probable but gee whiz, this panel needs a lot of explanation.
@ AusarOsiris:
I think if I was creating an evil plan and there was only one person who could bring it down, one of my first steps would be to convince my enemy that their savior was really one of my henchmen, and that one of my henchmen was their savior.
My call right now is that Lilith is the savior and San De Vertis is Eldor’s lackey.
So… Faye is quite the utilitarian
R-r-rolll Credits!

No, I think its just a cut to Lilith in a totally different location.
Hello LIli, nice to have you back.
I’m guessing it’s time to see what Lilith’s been up to. Knowing this comic, every question that’s answered will just raise one or more new questions.
Yay! We finally get to see Lilith!
I was so scared at the last panel.
Title drop smash cut. Been a while since I last saw that.
Who is the monster though…
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
Ooh, this is so fun. Now I’ll be held in suspense all weekend 🙁
Uh… “A wild Lilith appears!”
Alissa comes across as being awfully naive. She seems to need a few lessons in how reality works.

I don’t think Alissa can be called naive here, especially if you also consider the last page. Alissa is suspicious of San’s behaviour, and rightfully so. She doesn’t believe that Lilith will cast a world ending spell because on the one hand the evidence for that is fairly thin and she can’t see it for herself and has to trust the word of a handful of very powerful mages who can feel the ripples in the bluestream, and even those admit they have not actually seen future Lilith casting the world, but only draw rather vague conclusions from the style of the magic and the fact that she is one of the few wizards powerful enough to cast such a spell – but hardly the only one. On the other Hand, Alissa is Liliths best friend and has kown her for years as a genuinely nice, gentle and mostly selfless person. therefore, questioning the need to bring Lilith down at all costs is not naive, but rather the opposite, since she seems the only one in the room to challange Sans Statements about that basic point (Beside the king of course, who knows how San is really like).
I also totally understand that she snaps at Faye for her brutal utalitarian statement. There is a difference between saying “sometimes we may need the help of evil People to avert greater harm” and stating that she is totally okay with every atrocity that needed evil ally may commit (Faye may not really have meant it that way, but that is essentially what she said).
@Novil
It looks like you have some of Oliver’s German in our English transcript. Also I want to thank you for providing complete transcripts for those people who need screen readers or those of us who like to be able to do text searches on comic threads. Also Comic Threads are much better than Comic Sans
This is getting really tricky. Who is really “evisl” here?
Sure Eldor did really evil stuff to get to his goal, which we still don’t know what it is! It might be that he, like San, believes, or in fact does, something good for the world. Maybe the Spell Lillith is supposed to break after her training, the Spell that will “destroy the world” is actually not destorying the world but some kind of breaking a barrier or spell that is cast on the whole world! I mean, until now Eldor didn’t teach her how to kill, how to destroy, but how to escape, how to get rid of barriers….
Maybe Gaia isn’t the all loving goddess people beliebe she is and she cast a gigantic spell on all creatures to stay in Power…. and Eldor indeed trys to free Bhal to battle Gaia one more…
Until now Eldor seemed so surely to be evil but I think, compared to “just kill anyone who doesn’t cooperate” and the power hungy “I’ll crown myself queen over everything” it really gets difficult to deem everything he does pure evil, when the goal isn’t even appearent. I’m curious
It’s so easy to toss around the word ‘monster’ when someone isn’t on your side.
Ah, good. We get to find out what happened to Lilith… and she isn’t a magic-controlled zombie weapon of mass destruction. Yet.
@ someguy:
In general, Alissa seems to view the world in black-and-white terms. I though Faye’s statement was quite practical (unusual in itself for a comic) and slightly tongue-in-cheek. Not to mention appropriate given the gravity f the situation. After all, if San can literally save the world, then who really cares about anything else?
Alissa’s reaction seems rather ignorant of reality. So I’d have to disagree with you. She’s just one of those people who see things in absolutes. I’ve certainly met plenty of them.
Aaaand the judgement of Faye goes down to drain with that comment. Seriously, these people should not be making important decisions if they literally allow people like San to do as she please because she is powerful and throws around her weight with ”possible” threats without knowing the full story.
At this point, death-spell would be preferable to San’s planned reign. Heck the best solution I can see to this is just let Eldor and San blow each-other up and call it a day. They both deserve eachother.
I think the conception of “Magic machines” might be false, Savos.
@ Traveller: Haven’t we got a clash of moralities here, the magician’s against the fighter’s?
Oh-hoh-hoh? Now things are getting interesting!
I missed Lillith. I imagine Viviana’s taken most people attention but she’s still the main heroine in my book.
…and she’s Still mad about the fish.
I see conflicting moralities, here.
I’m recalling a phrase from another web comic, “Goblins – Life through Their Eyes”. A minor demon is gloating over two paladins disagreeing over a moral matter and saying something to the effect that when two good creatures disagree, each of them presumes the other to be evil, but when two evil creatures disagree, neither presumes the other to be good; they simply disagree. For this reason (the demon claims), evil is winning.
So are San and Lilith actually both “on the same team” but working at cross-purposes? And was this part of Eldor’s plan all along?
Lilith…does not look happy.
“If San’s able to get us out of this mess, she may eat as many children for breakfast as she desires as far as I’m concerned.”
… first time I’ve wanted to “upvote” an in-story comment. 😀
No serioously, if a few more of the Powers That Be realised the truth in that kind of thing, the world would be better for it. Except for them what’s babies get ‘et, of course.
Ilmari wrote:
I politely wish to disagree. Allowing people to “eat children” for breakfast” just becaue they did something very “good” will improve nothing.
Maybe sometime you have to break things or kill people to protect your own. But every harm you do to someone else will come back to bite you.
Ever wondered why Iran isn’t that fond of the US? Ever wondered why there are 2 new terrorist for every one that’s killed?
An eye for an eye isn’t a good policy, btw. People tend to overvalue their own pain and thus to over-retaliate.
So “an eye for an eye” normally ends up with “kill my brother and I wipe out your family”.
A few adages to keep in mind, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions” , “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”
and “The true test of power is how you dont use it” .
So far every single powerful mage who has the power to destroy the world has both done good stuff and bad stuff, except Lilth. San has done bad stuff with her magic, forcing people to conform, but on the other hand she also defeated a super evil mage. Eldor has done evil stuff with his magic to get to his goal, but he has taught mages really important spells. But Lilith.. LILITH has done ALL good, and its THEORIZED that she will do something bad. It seems to me, that San just wants a scapegoat, to ignore her own problems, also where is Eldor? If Eldor is really all knowing, with his crystal ball thingy, then why doesn’t he know of this plan San has created?
Also, Alisa brought up ONE POINT in defense of Alisa, and Ryn IMMDIETALY folded, rethinking his decision of the support of the end of Lilith. This >CLEARLY< shows how the argument against Lilith is honestly, really weak and hanging on a few threads, and if one of those threads were cut the whole argument would fall apart.
@ clickbait:
Though I agree that eating children for breakfast is a poor policy, I think the point is that Faye will ignore the potential evil of San as long as everyone survives. I am certain Faye does not condone the consumption of minors.
Hickory wrote:
To a certain degree …
Still. The lesser evil remains just that: evil.
Faye shouldn’t hand out a blanko cheque like that, even it’s pretty clear that San wouldn’t actually eat children. Accepting evil deeds just to prevent greater evil can’t work.
I’m not talking about breaking morality rules … I’m talking about killing people “for the better of many” or hunger for power.
If a just king has a few mistresses … that’s his problem.
If a king/priestess/power-that-be kills or mistreats people because they disagree with him/her or are in his/her way – no matter how justified this might seem – this will lead to no good.
clickbait wrote:
Faye’s whole notion of working with San survives under one notion: that Lilith is evil. If that one fact is wrong, everything else crumbles.
But unfortunately, this is the way of the world. We vote for one president to save us from one threat or another (take your pick in this election)? But what if the immigrants or deplorables are nothing to fear? What if the dictator is using our fear to do what they want? I love it when comics are relevant to world events.

Ah-HAH! That explains why Xarlaxe was lurking around the prison during the prison break. I always wondered why he was there… Now we know.
