Stating her name and homestown, followed by a badass boast, and then a spell simply titled Ultima? This going to sting like hell Bhaal. Have fun. I guess this means that Eldor will be the true final boss after all?
“Ultima” is Latin (it’s a borrowing in English), and it’s feminine. It does not only mean “the last one”, also “the farthest”, as in “Ultima Thule” (“ultimus” is the superlative of “ulterior”, beyond). The meaning of “definitive” makes no problem, but the “farthest” meaning does. It could mean “the last, definitive” spell in the sense nobody and nothing can overcome it, also it’s the one that finishes your existence. All fits well with the speech, almost (or whole) a sentence (“I’m the judge so-and-so and this is my sentence that you obviously deserve”). But the sense of “far away”… I suppose death is the farthest place to go (and never return, of course). Last panel is very bright, a bit strange for a death penalty.
I guess Eldor’s pants must be soiled and wetted. Adding insult to injury, Eldor is Pigmalion, and Lili gets on top of him (and Bhaal’s).
Bhaal been disappointing me since she showed up lol.
For god she’s being dispatched pretty easily by Lilith, granted she’s studied under Eldor and gained great amounts of knowledge on spells and how they work. I still feel Bhaal’s first appearance should’ve had more of a “boom” and now Lilith is mopping the floor with her head lol. We didn’t even get any hidden back plot or lore from her or even a final appearance of Gaia herself but I don’t know, maybe “ultima” won’t be the ending of this comic like we all think.
If you read the page of the kickstarter campaign (the Complete Gaia), the comic will end more or less in the middle of the summer. There will be a final chapter after the current, The Third Age, so there is room enough for a lot of pending themes. I guess we will see in flashback more about Bhaal then. Or not. I don’t know.
bhaal has been known all the time, just has always chose to act indirectly through eldor. but eldor more than once has made it clear it was acting on actual orders from bhaal (or at least what he believed were orders from bhaal).
and with lili being either gaia personified or just a proxy for her, its not like it has been established that lili is at least on par with bhaal now.
in fairness. we don’t even know if lili expects this to be a one shot kill or just the first round to weaken bhaal. nor do we know for sure lili really knows what she assumes she does at this moment.
for one it is interesting that she is given bhaal personal credit for the actions of eldor.
not to mention, what does death mean to bhaal or even gaia for that matter? one does not simply kill a god to paraphase tolkein a bit.
even if death means death for them, what does their complete absence mean for the world?
I am still leaing towards bhaal being gaia and the crazy old guy being righ the bhaal was just an illusion.
Green casting by Lilith whose soul is not fully together with her body — under the name «Ultima», which could in principle mean that’s also the ultimate-as-last spell she can ever cast. It does make me worry if this is a spirit-sacrificing casting or something like that with large risks for the caster.
On the other hand, Lilith seems to have a plan to try getting back Sandril (which can fail, but still). And this speech of listing the horrible things Bhaal does without mentioning what lows Lilith has had to survive, and concluding «Still standing tall» sets a confident tone. So hopefully she can walk away on her own after casting that.
I guess this means that Eldor will be the true final boss after all?
More the task of evicting Eldor from the body in a way that allows rescuing Sandril than Eldor as an opponent, I guess. But maybe the challenge most worthy of the true final challenge name will not be personalised. Like something about managing the consequences…
Bhaal been disappointing me since she showed up lol.
Maybe we should properly appreciate Lilith’s achievement of safely bringing her friends to the place where the notions of «where» and «place» are supposed to dissolve. Somehow Bhaal also doesn’t seem to think much of it, even though the last time a human had entered void, the greatest archdevil was slain.
and with lili being either gaia personified or just a proxy for her, its not like it has been established that lili is at least on par with bhaal now.
She doesn’t exactly behave like a proxy for Gaia, what about having rejected and condemned Gaia… And «this is my spell» sounds like a reiteration, that this is Lilith’s battle, not Gaia’s. Probably Lilith does not need the power from Tear of Gaia to cast that.
in fairness. we don’t even know if lili expects this to be a one shot kill or just the first round to weaken bhaal. nor do we know for sure lili really knows what she assumes she does at this moment.
Well, we do not know if it will be a one shot kill, but it should probably be the main part. Or the hardest part. «Ultima» should mean something.
Lilith knows at least something that Bhaal doesn’t, unless Bhaal only pretends to be unable to escape the shield and in fact has already escaped… (which would be possible, but feels unlikely)
what does their complete absence mean for the world?
Well, it looks like the official history and Bhaal agree that Gaia is dead and bluestream is still there. Maybe this world does not require a goddess to recreate it each instance.
Poor assuming Bhaal thought that shield was to trap her. No That shield is to make sure the deatomzing blast now leveled at her hits Only her and doesn’t vapourize the planet as predicted.
Stating her name and homestown, followed by a badass boast, and then a spell simply titled Ultima? This going to sting like hell Bhaal. Have fun. I guess this means that Eldor will be the true final boss after all?
Maybe Gaia is the endboss? Lili doesn’t seem to see much difference between the two of them.
@ Liswind:
Lilith defeated Bhaal in one of the early pages. It didn’t happen now. She already was so far ahead of Eldor’s plan and Bhaal. This is nothing like You described. Lilith has won long time ago. It just needed to happen.
It is Ultima “the farthest one”, the Last one, because here and now Magic is suspended. Lili DOES spend half of the planet magic, leaving only the life force and the natural elements, closing the doors to all human, draconil or elfen magic. Sorry, Vivi, your techno legs will shut down in a minute…
So, the way to defeat Bhall, the endless evil, the unstoppable monster-god who was just barely stopped from destroying the world, the reviled betrayer-god who’s hated by millions… is to put her in a box and “Last Spell of some kind” at her? Viviana might start to worry about her “easy mode” standing being challenged. Did anyone ever check the timer for the “Lillith Calean’s Arcona destroying Spell”? There’s been a lot of super magic from her lately. I don’t know if she’s monologing, or if it’s part of the spellcasting to make a speech to sound badarse enough for the spirit of magic to wave the level cap and allow her to cast the spell.
That spell reminds me of “Ultima Ratio Regum” (The King’s Last Argument), which is the sword. You can’t really argue with (against) destructive forces.
Reading these pages makes me all the more thankful that you allowed us to implement Lilith’s Staff as an item in Board Game Online. It’s one of the most powerful magic items in our game and seeing Lilith in action here, with her staff… Hot damn, we made the right call! <3
I don’t think that Lilith represents Gaia at this point. I won’t be surprised if she will become a goddes herself after this (maybe Trias the greenstream creator?).
As for me, the most impressive thing about this page is the rendering of the shield. A hemisphere of hexagons. Powree is using some cool graphical software.
I’m a little disappointed with Bhaal, I’m sorry it’s just anti climatic and lame to see this unstoppable evil and one of the gods of this world apparently be dish out in only 3 pages. The hype was kinda built up for this Bhaal to have this dark ethereal presence and for it to be this powerful otherworldly being, like come on it lives in the void! I know Lilith is god tier now but I feel Bhaal is this universes Kaguya otsutsuki let alone Momoshiki. Well rip I guess unless being a God means Bhaal can’t be permanently killed granted if it chooses to. @ Paeris Kiran:
the legality of using a spell name from another work would depend how specific it is. as has been said “ultima” essencially just means final or greatest or last depending on context. it would be like trying to trademark “final” as such. there is no creative content to protect as such by trying to claim its trademarked.
now if he had taken one of the elvish quotes from Tolkien say and used that, that would be a much different matter.
of course I think Disney tried to trademark every character in alladin, except alladin itself. but again I think that hinges on the detail that a 1000 year old story using the alladin name exists, while all the other names were picked by Disney for the movie and are not historically part of the original tale.
As for me, the most impressive thing about this page is the rendering of the shield. A hemisphere of hexagons. Powree is using some cool graphical software.
This just shows the power of Lilith’s spell, since without magic it’s impossible to make a sphere of hexagons. You need 12 pentagons in there.
Didn’t someone say something about “greenstream”?
Stating her name and homestown, followed by a badass boast, and then a spell simply titled Ultima? This going to sting like hell Bhaal. Have fun. I guess this means that Eldor will be the true final boss after all?
@ Raven:
Or that Bhaal has been Eldor the whole time!
Cue FF boss music.
Am I the only person with Yu-Gi-Oh “Exodia” memories when looking at the last panel? Specifically, the card’s “automatic win condition”.
Ultima sounds pretty final to me… bye Bhaal.
Ultima – the last – the end – time suspension shield?

Oh man, please tell me that after all this years they didn’t just go Naruto and introduced a villain only to kill her off in two panels.

Well quite frankly the deity just slashing energies against a shield she is trapped in is somewhat disappointing.
I would rather consider some space-time things – which Eldor was actually quite good at… considering Eldor – shouldnt he be doing something?
