My favorite pages from the last three chapters – Places 1 to 10
Last week, I posted the places 11 to 20 from my personal top list of all pages from the previous three chapters. Now I want to post my top 10. The following pages are listed in chronological order.
You can vote for your personal favorite of these 10 pages with the voting widget in the right sidebar!
This is my favorite panel in the whole comic! The pose is perfect, the facial expression is perfect, the camera angle is perfect, and the whole scene is awesome! Our reader jeffepp summarized Viviana’s speech as follows: “At the beginning of the speech, she had an 80% approval rating. By the end of the raid, it was 95%. Last panel: 99.44%.”
Finally, a last short comedic moment before the dramatic last two chapters. I love how the three of them interact in this page.
This is my favorite page from the firework scene at the end of The Last Queen of Gaia. I love the design of the birds in the last panel.
Powree drew San’s sudden appearance in this page exactly like I envisioned it. Our readers were extremely skeptical of San’s intentions since her smile in the last panel is so hard to read.
I wasn’t sure if Powree would be able to draw the Spirit Source as I envisioned it without multiple revisions. But the very first version already looked better than I ever imaged it. Powree absolutely nailed the look of the Source!
Ryn’s fall through the Source in the fourth panel would have been a perfect cliffhanger at the end of the page. But that would have required adding unnecessary filler panels before it.
The only double page of Gaia. My script contained descriptions for two disjoint pages, but Powree successfully experimented with a double page layout. This made the simultaneity of Lilith’s actions much clearer.
The crystal cave looks absolutely gorgeous! Once again, I gave Lilith a colored word bubble to improve the color composition of the page.
Bhaal in the last panel is one of the best drawings of a single character in the entire comic. Of course our readers were very surprised by Bhaal’s “true form”.
The visual effect in the last panel blew me away when I first saw it. I asked Powree to draw the “prettiest green you’ve ever drawn”. And she delivered! Lilith’s Ultima spell was heavily inspired by Final Fantasy VII’s Ultima spell.
It seems obvious now that San had some kind of nervous smile because she knew she was probably going to die…
(All those panels are gorgeous. It is hard to vote anyway!)
Funny how you mention the colored word bubble while the small preview shows a black-and-white bubble 😉
But, preview inconsistencies notwithstanding, every single page definitely deserved the mention. You did a fantastic job!
Ah, now I understand why none of the obvious choices were in last week’s offerings!
It’s interesting that your choices are all about the art, rather than the plot, even though the plot is your job in the partnership. (We should get Powree’s choices to see if they’re plot-based!)
Personally, the memorable pages for me are about plot and characters. In comics generally, I rarely notice the art unless it gets in the way. (This isn’t because I don’t love art! I’m a collector; all my walls have three rows of art, floor to ceiling. But reading a comic, for me, is more like reading a book than like visiting a museum.) So, for example, I can’t stand Last Queen 39, which was on last week’s list, because Viviana is being devious and cruel, and of course she’s one of my favorite characters, so that makes me unhappy. (It’s okay when the bad guys are being devious and cruel.) But I loved the Bipartite 55 and 56, in which Lilith is putting everything right, taking care of the small details as well as the large issues.
Options chosen by art, and I choose for plot, so hard to say.
If it was The Door 060 instead of 059… I hope San got her piece of bittersweet enjoyment before death from finally being the wizard whom the queen must obey…
So probably The Last Queen of Gaia #61 — although the last panel goes too far. Vivivana definitely knows how attention to details works! Shadowdancers 063 and all that…

She is not cruel! Manipulative, sure. But if San were just a bit less «first or nothing», she would take it as a consolation prize — it’s very high praise on a universally watched broadcast, after all. Unfortunately, San and Viviana could not really understand each other here — Viviana would be happy to run intelligence services for queen Salacea instead of taking the crown.
