Looking for guest art!

We need to build a larger buffer of finished pages, so Gaia won’t be updated during two weeks in January 2013.

To fill the gap, we’re looking for Gaia guest art!

Guest art must feature at least one character who has appeared in Gaia so far.

The artwork will be published on the Gaia homepage in place of a normal comic page. It will stay online for two or three days, so it will be seen by at least 10,000 different visitors. After that, it will be moved to the (not yet existing) “Artwork” page on our website.

You should send the finished image to novil@gmx.de.

If your guest art is drawn digitally, I would prefer if you send it to me in its original size in a lossless format (for example PNG without reduced color depth). If your guest art is drawn on paper and then scanned in, you should send me a cleaned version of reasonable size in a lossless format.

I will add a copyright notice with your name and website (if you have one) at the bottom of the image. This copyright notice will be more prominent than the one we usually use. Your name and website will also be added to the description area below the image. Your website has to be rated USK-16 (suitable for teenagers) or less. This excludes any sort of pornographic and extremely violent content. The website does not have to be a webcomic site; it could also be a blog, gallery, etc. You can include a short description of your webcomic/website.

Scan the world with your Kinect

… Or with your ASUS Xtion:

The 3D App Center by FARO! - Stand-Alone Apps - FARO - SCENECT

As you may know I work as a software developer for FARO Technologies. We recently released a Windows application called SCENECT that can be used to create point clouds of the environment while using a Kinect or Xtion as “camera”. The software was well received by professional operators of 3D tools, and is available for free in FARO’s application store. There are also plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube, e.g. about creating a polygon model out of your point cloud. There’s also an interesting thread in the laser scanning forum that features several cool scan projects and advanced scanning techniques. Kudos to my colleagues Rasmus Debitsch and Gerrit Hillebrand who are the main developers of SCENECT.

Meanwhile, we also released the new versions of our main application SCENE 5.1, which is used to process and visualize point clouds gathered with our Focus 3D laser scanner, and its associated web viewer SCENE WebShare 5.1. The new WebShare version was mainly developed by me, by the way. You can have a look at it on our official SCENE WebShare server:

Minor website improvements

Today I worked on the website and removed commented out or unnecessary elements. I also replaced some database calls with hard-coded HTML to reduce the server load. The webpages should load slightly faster now. One always has to look that a website doesn’t become cluttered because more and more stuff is added to it.

My major ad provider will probably release asynchronous ads soon which should further increase the website speed.

Gaia now also published at MangaMagazine.net

Gaia at MangaMagazine.netGaia is now also published at MangaMagazine.net (start reading here)! At the moment, only the first 21 pages of chapter 1, The Red Hall, are available, but at least five pages per week will be posted during the next months to catch up with our main page.

Gaia is currently classified as a “featured” comic at MangaMagazine.net, but I hope it will be promoted to a “premium” comic soon which would be very lucrative for Powree and me. Of course, we need more page views and “fans of this comic” at MangaMagazine.net first.

Sketches and inked pages for donators

I have added the sketches and inked versions of all comic pages to the exclusive page for donators. This includes the complete first chapter “The Red Hall” and all comics up to the current page 51 from the second chapter “Shadowdancers”.

Like the sketches for Sandra and Woo, the images (770 pixels wide) are conveniently placed in a couple of zip archives. The final comic pages are also available for download!
