[0004] Nomenclature
└ posted on Monday, 3 November 2008, by Novil
The current story arc started with this strip: A Sly Raccoon.
- Sandra: Does that mean we can keep the raccoon?
- Richard: At least for the time being… First of all, we have to give him a name. Mr. Farley was… uhm… tied up when I left and didn’t tell me his name.
- Sandra: Well… what do you think of Wilbur?
- Richard: I dunno. How about Ted?
- Woo: Ted would be alright. As long as it’s not Rascal. Calling a raccoon Rascal is worse than calling a cat Pussy.
- Richard: No, wait! I’ve got it!
- Woo: Dear God, please don’t let it be Rascal!
- Richard: Let’s call him Rascal!
- Woo: Damn you, Sterling North! Damn you for all eternity!
were you inspired by woo tales? http://floppitycomics.xepher.net/
It’s very coincidental, the raccoon being named woo also. I’m just curious because my mind wants to make them the same character. Is Woo as common a name for raccoons as Rascal?
“Sandra and Woo” was not inspired by “Woo Tales” or vice versa.
Although the artwork of “Woo Tales” is very cute, the comic just doesn’t appeal to me and, after having a look at it, I don’t “get” the storyline of its predecessor. In fact I don’t care at all about Kat Smith’s Woo or her other characters and any similarities between the two Woos concerning their looks or their personalities are purely coincidental. With a second look at it, “Woo Tales” seems to get a real storyline instead of the motley drawings of its predecessor, a development which suits me.
Hey! Comic is lookin’ good. We should do a crossover someday, might be interesting. ^_^
Hello Kat,
Hmm, with a second look at it my first post was maybe a bit harsh. I didn’t want to give the impression that I think your comic is “bad”. The artwork is very good and I am sure that your comic appeals to a lot of readers, but it would be a lie if I would say that I enjoyed the storyline.
In fact, I believe that this “issue” can be good for both of us! For example, if someone points out to a reader that there is another comic featuring a raccoon called Woo, he might end up reading both comics. And getting new readers is always a good thing. For a start, I have included a link to your comic on our link page.
Guest strips are one thing which are problematic on our part since I could only do some “ghostwriting”. Anyone who is interested in a guest strip would have to ask Powree first and she is *very* busy.
Hey that’s cool, it’s certainly not for everyone! No worries about the guest strip thing, I’ll probably fire some fan art your way in the future though.
It’s a real relief knowing that you’re cool with being on good terms, I’ll slap a link on my site as well.
Cheers! ^_^
Conspiracy! JK 😛 I like both comics and I [probably wouldn’t have mentioned anything if I hadn’t found them both on the same day/hour.
This cracked me up. I loved “Rascal”, it intorduced me to the world of books. Raccoons have been my totem ever since
Is it also a coincidence that the person who tried to name him Rascal has the same last name of the person it’s referenced to…? <_< I’m wondering if that was an accident or not.
gosh, i used to have a plushie raccoon called rascal.
Sterling North is screwed.
I don’t quite know who Sterling North is, but this first look into Woo’s mind is hilarious ^_^
… Didn’t this page used to say “Be damned” instead of “Damn you”? o.O
@ FerreTrip:
Sterling North was an American author of children’s and adult books in the 20th century. His award-winning best-seller, “Rascal”, details how he raised a baby raccoon when he was a kid.
What does ‘Nomenclature’ mean, if anything?
@ JA_of_MN:
It refers to the way in which something is named. For instance, ‘standard nomenclature’ in biology is the system scientists use to classify plants and animals, with phylum, genus, species and the other categories being in a specific order for any scientific name.
The reference is lost to me, but this page is still very funny! XD
he already has fliping coller
Wow, I played Sly Cooper and read the book Rascal xD This is excellent!
I just found this and haven’t laughed this hard in a while. Sterling North was my great grandfather. I sent it to my entire family and they are equally entertained.
@ Kat:
Just a heads-up; I’ve found your site to be swamped with malware. You might want to look into that.
I always thought “Bert” was a reasonable name for a Raccoon… but that is probably because I used to be a fan of Mary Poppins and thought Raccoons looked rather like they’d been sweeping chimneys.
@ FerreTrip:
Sterling North was the writer of a book called Rascal, one of the…”classics” of American Literature.
Personally, I’d pick “Rocket”
Wait, that terrible owner in the last comic was a “Mr.”? I thought he was a woman! (Because of the small ponytail.)
Fun fact, the Rascal anime made so many people import raccoons into Japan that they started doing massive damage to the country since they have no natural predators there.
You can no longer import raccoons to Japan.
