- Sid: I think democracy is the best possible political system!
- Woo: You do?!
- Shadow: That’s great!
- Woo: Who supports the new law that all present squirrels should be eaten by a fox and a raccoon?
- Sid: VETO! VETO!
- Woo: I’m sorry, but a majority is a majority.
- Sid: I think democracy is the worst possible political system…

Ooh, I hope you didn’t kill Sid off. I haven’t been able to find him since this comic.
typical politician
Wooooo…..
You started a full on discussion about politics…
I WOULD care, if not for my age (13) and the fact that gaming is more my genre.
But, what happened to glorious COLOUR???
Oh well, a one off is better than none at all.
By it’s very definition Democracy lets the majority override the minority. Sometimes that works for us, sometimes it doesn’t. If the margin is 49% to 51%, the majority wins, but does that mean you should ignore what the minority is trying to say? In a purely Democratic system, yes, yes it does.
As far as I can tell, every other form of government is treated like a dirty word, so much so that I couldn’t remember the ‘pros’ of any of them before a ‘con’. And yes, there had to be ‘pros’. I think the great battle cry of most of the nation is no longer Liberty and Freedom, but “Don’t touch my stuff! and if you don’t agree with me you’re [insert insult here].”
Don’t worry, Squirrel Girl will save him. She defeated Doctor Doom and Deadpool
Ah, the problems of democracy… 🙂
@ Gabreilsthoughts:
Yeah, but when are both parties ever equal?
the founding fathers never wanted a true democracy in fact that is one of the things that they feared would happen
As an American who usually likes his country’s political system (…kind of…most of the time…and technically we’re a republic) I’d say that the idea is that the judicial system protects squirrel-like minorities. Except when California overturns its court’s decision (Prop 8).
And, what chrisleech said above me. The drafters of the constitution were quite frightened of the “vagueries of the people”. The father of America’s democracy as we know it today is Andrew Jackson, the president responsible for the Trail of Tears.
You know what Mel Gibson said in “The Patriot”: Why should I trade a tyrant that is thousand miles away, for thousands of tyrants at my doorstep. XD
@ RadChad:
One must remember that the United States is NOT a democracy, but a Democratic Federal Republic. Democracy is actually considered one of the worst forms of government, whereas a Republic is considered one of the best forms of government. Pretty interesting stuff…
Democracy is the majority will respecting minorities.
🙂
I’m loving these strips, your fine humour and the way you draw.
@ Accursed:
This is why America is a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy.
A democracy is three wolves and a sheep voting on what’s for dinner.
A Constitutional Republic is where the sheep has a gun and a list of what’s not on the menu.
Sid was right to change his mind about democracy. Socialism is a better alternative for him “Because, in Soviet Russia squirrel eat YOU!”
It’s a good thing America is a republic!
@ JA_of_MN:
soviet russia was communist
I said it once, and I’ll say it again: this comic is SO MUCH like “Housepets!”.
Democracy can be interpreted 2 ways: government by everyone, with one vote per person; or government by “the governed”, meaning that an attempt, at least, is made to link influence on a decision to the extent to which the person is effected by it, in which case Sid would be able to outvote Shadow & Woo and have nothing to worry about
LOL Such true words Woo….. 😛
Wow. Politics certainly does have a way of ending friendships, doesn’t it?
The only good government is a dead government.
Or perhaps a little less cynically… a government is useless if subject to the same vices it exists to protect against… which all human governments inevitably are.
The best one can actually hope for in a government is actually a single benevolent ruler… No shortage of them in fantasy… but in reality humans tend to have human concerns, human desires, and human flaws… The best you could do is to find the fairest, most honest and impartial person you can and then put them in charge… and even then you’d just get a “so-so” sort of government.
We’d be better off with a big computer in charge, essentially.
Go go technocracy!
Otherwise… Anarchy forever.
This is so one sided, he should know better then say that in front of two carnivores XD

.17HMR recoil may be low for humans, but it would be far too much for a squirrel. Hell, the gun would probably weigh more than he does!
I absolutely love this comic. My siblings have basically this exact discussion all the time, and frequently we make jokes about holding a supermajority.
Good old democracy…
Yup. Everybody loves democracy until the guy they don’t like gets elected.
This is exactly why we need a direct democracy (regulated via a Constitution 1 All creatures deserve respect )
If you’re reading this in the UK, 2016… 😉
In ancient Rome, the power of Veto actually prevented the bill from even being read, such that it couldn’t be voted on. You spoke too late, Sid.
Democracy is about consensus, not voting for stuff like that.
