noooooo, this is so sad.
(gasp) oh no! sniffle* sniffle*
…Well that was….dark.
10 weeks already? That was a jump, but is that Sid already, squirrels give birth so fast?
I can feel this is going to be a sad part, but I still have hopes on things turning out well in the end. 🙂
She can’t go now!!!!
I can’t tell what that critter is that’s after them. D:
I think that´s a wolf.
Gestation period for a European Red is roughly 40 days. They are weaned at about 10 weeks, so poor Sid would have been at about that time period. Pretty rough to be on one’s own that soon. 🙁

According to the references for this panel, it’s a marten…or more specifically, probably a pine marten.
Aw, poor Sid. Hazel, you’re from the Autobahns land, should be used with cars faster than that.
A minute of silence fot the squittel lady who outwited the authorities of a whole contry. Or, at least, of an airport.
So Hazel was preagnant before she went in the plane?
Not to be insensitive, but I’ve always wondered why squirrels don’t try to get between the wheels of a car(where it will pass right over them).
Many animals just stop when a car is coming at them and let themselves be hit. Back in 09 in Colorado, a prairie dog stopped right in the middle of the road as my grandma was driving down the road. Just stopped and stared at her. Sort of what Hazel is doing right now.
Hazel’s heart has to be thundering by now.
My first impression was that Sid tripped and Hazel saved him by pushing him out of the way. Now that I look at it I realize that Sid tripped and that Hazel was in the middle of running back to get him before the predator did when a car came along and hit her.
Sad time to be sure. To be honest I (and I’m sure others) did see something like this coming (something had to explain why Hazel wasn’t a character) even if we chose to put the idea off in the back of our minds.
WHY?!

Yes, a moment of silence for a devoted mother, that reminding me of this song

For people who already play Disgaea, you know what event is this.
…Oh.
*sniff* =,(
OH NOES!
That was mean… Hazel looked so _happy_ in strip #0232 until she grabbed that breaking branch… she didn’t deserve to end like this.
A moment of silence 🙁
Ooh, I’d kill to have that license plate…
finally completed reading all strips both in english and german ! pffiiuuu !
thumbs up from romania ! great webcomic, men ! keep it up !
I’d say that she got saved by Shadow which is why it’s so dark.
But I guess that would be wishful thinking.
At the other hand, isn’t Sid telling his lifestory to one of Shadows Kids right now?
And why do I feel the urge to listen to time of dying right now? 🙁 *sniff*
It will be interesting to see how lil’ Sid manages to escape from the marten all by himself…

Standard instinctual defense mechanism: Freeze at the sight of a potential predator…”Maybe it won’t see me.” Unfortunately, that doesn’t work with a car.
I have also seen squirrels who have learned to not freeze when a car is coming, they simply run faster and lift-up their tail in the hopes they make it across before the car crosses their path.
…Wait, what’s going on here? All I see are two squirrels being chased by a predator. For starters, how did that transition from the strip before, and secondly, who are the two squirrels anyways?
D:
Why do I feel like I missed a comic? One moment Hazel runs into the forest, next she exits with another squirrel.
@ Lurker: That’s life, unfortunately. What wild animal that has died actually deserved it?
@ Tim:
It’s hard to notice at first glance, but to the left of the first panel is a box that says “Ten weeks later”.
The other squirrel is Sid.
@ doug:
In actuality it wouldn’t help very much. The air currents under a car would throw a little animal up into the machinery underneath and then bounce them down the road after it passed.
They might survive, but its just barely better than the wheels. Not to mention reaction time when surprised by something a few hundred times your size coming at you that quick.
The marten certainly narrows down the area in which this story could be taking place. The American marten is found only in limited areas of the U.S. and much of Canada.
He was a great Hazel.
He collected a sum of 100000 nuts, still he didn’t think that was enough.
He died wile fighting that four wheeled beast!
may he rest in peace in Paradise ;_;
Ohhhh, she was already pregnant with him. I get it now. I never got that until I saw the “ten weeks later” and there’s young Sid.
@ Frank:
Clearly, beavers.
Damn thee beaver, damn thee! *Shake fist*
Moxie Man:
Well, technically, it works. The driver doesn’t always see the animal, after all
Still though, this is like saying that, “Technically, decapitation will get rid of that headache”. It may technically work, but at the same time the result is not worth it
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
wow.
Oh no! Poor Hazel!
How terribly tragic!
Bloody fast forwarding. I thought for sure it’d be all happy after she escaped the Airport. First time we get to see baby Sid and he’s in so much fear. *whines*
This happens more often then one might think but still…GAH!
Talk about a Cliffhanger! Yet sad….I admit I cried at the last pannel…….It keeps me saying “NO DONT DIE!” as if it will change the course of the whole comic And I honestly think the chances of Shadow SAVING sids mom is 1 to 609.4 I mean Realy Shadow tries to EAT sid every day (Well ALMOST every day) and Hazel…….Well we all saw the last strip didnt we? everyone lets take off are hats in respect……Unless……..
@ gaboris:
No, I think that the other squirrel must be Sid’s father.
guys its a freaken squirrel.. the Ninja of the animal kingdom..shes not very tall either.. she COULD just ..i dun know.. duck?

OK I’m not an animal biologist or any animal expert but I don’t remember any indication of Hazel being pregnant at the start of the backstory, and even if Sid was born between those 10 weeks I doubt he would grow that fast.
Even if that was near-accurate growth, it doesn’t excuse the large plot gap between the two strips.
@ DiDi: Have you ever seen how squirrels move? Very fast, very twitchy, always looking behind their back. Squirels live in fear. All the time. Most rodents do, for that matter. It’s the tragedy of being the bottom of the food chain.
@ Nivarion:
Well, I read somewhere the air pressure under a car doesn’t actually cause the animal to whirl around like crazy, but it hits the poor thing with the force and comfortability of a sledgehammer. Internal bleedings do the rest. The animal is crushed in it’s own body…
I still do have hope Hazel survived. Maybe the car hit a tree or whatnot instead of her. Otherwise: R.I.P. cute one.
Been loving your comic from day one, just never got around to posting. so Hi!
poor hazel, hope she’s okay…
NOOOOOOOOO HAAAAAAAZZZZZZZEEEEEELLLLLLL!!!!
