The current story arc started with this comic: Irrhetorical Question.
The original ladder theory. (contains not safe for work language)
- Caption: The next day.
- Larisa: Thanks so much for your help. That was so nice of you!
- Landon: Good luck on your test!
- Benjamin: Hey, Theo, looks like somebody just climbed up Larisa’s “friends ladder” all the way to the top.
- Landon: “Friends ladder”, what?
- Benjamin: And the clueless chap’s not even aware of the ladder theory!
- Theo: Tragic.
- Benjamin: Then let’s enlighten the nerd, Theo. We boys have to stick together, after all.
- Theo: Flip chart, please.
- Theo: All boys rate girls according to their attractiveness and place them on a ladder.
- Caption: 10 – Girl you’d French kiss right in front of your mom
8 – Girl you’d French kiss
6 – Girl you’d kiss
4 – Girl you’d kiss on the cheek
2 – Girl you’d kiss on the cheek in exchange for a new Xbox game
The Abyss – Girl you’d only kiss if she’d chop off your feet with an axe otherwise
- Theo: Girls, however, have two ladders. One “real ladder” for boys they’d like to kiss, and one “friends ladder” for boys they’d like to be friends with ’cause they’re soooo nice.
- Caption: 10 – BEST FRIENDS FOREVER!
8 – Boy she’d talk with about other boys
6 – Boy she’d go shopping with
4 – Boy she’d do homework with
2 – Boy who’d better sit three benches away

I find it interesting that everyone is ignoring the fact that a (presumably) American character just said “chap”.
@ Bucc-i:
Hah! someone else noticed that the forth wall has been broken! the characters are aware of the artist! if this contiuses we’ll have a character creator fight.
@ OrphanDidgeridoo:
you seem to have been pretty fortunate…from your comment, i’d think youd never been in a “special friendship” with a girl.
Hey now I lost the game. http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/index.php?title=Game:Abyss&offset=63
@ AmbiValent:
Agreed… this thing disturbs me deeply. If someone actually “scores” people they interact with either of these ways, I have a hard time believing there isn’t something seriously wrong with them. (Okay, the ‘sex’ ladder is comparatively forgivable, but still creepy.)
The idea of a ‘friend zone’ bugs the hell out of me. You’d think of someone as a lover, but you couldn’t stand to have them as a friend? A romantic relationship that formed from a prior, platonic relationship has a better chance of success… or at least, if it falls, it’s less likely to fall in flames.
@ s4i:
You’re going to have to clarify it for me my friend. What did I take from you?
The most I can do is expose the truth. After that you’re on your own. I have no desire to take anything through subtraction. I’ll be the first to acknowledge I am inspired by others and that I am influenced by the things that like. In as much as, I try to understand the things I discover including the things I don’t like.
I believe that facts can influence opinions and that there is a difference between a rational belief and an irrational one. There is just as much logic as there is nonsense in the world. If you want me to pity you than It isn’t happening, because even if life is predetermined an individual’s choices are not.
Friendship Ladder seems like an eufemism for TV SITCOM GAY BFF not like a real friendship ladder, the “go shoping” and “talk about boys” are not what I do with my girl friends (well meybe go shoping, girls have great taste)

So naive… It is GUARANTEED is going to burst and fall in FLAMES
Ahh, Theo, you adorable dork. So convinced he has girls figured out at an age where girls don’t even have girls figured out!
Woe betide those who should dare to mention the dreaded female race on THE INTERNET of all places.
Learning!
I love these comics. I’ve read them all a few times. I did notice that the link to the ladder chart is has two “http://” causing a broken link. Although it looks like it isn’t causing any issues.
When climbing life’s ladders, always be on the lookout for the snakes between the rungs.
@ altengal:
May I please make a point? A theory is not something easily proven wrong. It was a hypothesis, which has been tested extensively and has withstood that rigorous testing. As a science major, this is one thing that really irks me.

I know that friend ladder only too well 🙁
While we’re explaining to boys how girls have a 2-ladder system, we’re also revealing to the girls that boys operate with only a single-ladder relationship system. Perhaps we should not be giving away the secrets of all those “platonic friends secretly hoping for more” out there?
@ Tales of Shadow:
There goes that forth wall again, unless they never bothered putting it back up after the last time it was demolished.
Honestly… the friend-zone isn’t a bad place to be. At least you have someone to talk to there.
These days I’m a permanent resident of the abyss.
Whoop! There goes the 4th wall…
@ Cloymax:
Yes, I liked that bit of fourth-wall breaking there with the artist’s hand.
Also, I used a similar theory in one of my comics, but it was more of a dating *pyramid*.
I don’t know about that… I mean, I’m just generally not attracted to many people in “that way”, and my placing of someone on either ladder is not necessarily gender-exclusive, so everyone I’ve ever know, excluding a special three individuals, landed somewhere on the “Friendship Ladder”.
Ah! I’m male, by the way; I need to make my point, after all.
This type of depth of understanding is so rare nowadays! Upon reading just a pair of your posts,
I subscribed right away. Mind you, I only subscribe to sites with really
