Sid is still single? and the 2 species can mate?
The damage’s done now, if anything I’d eat it just to not let that sudden orphanity be in vain
I think that now would be a good time to introduce Ruth to Shadow and Echo…
“Shadow has been a friend and protector since forever, Echo spared my life even though she was ravenous, and their cute little kits will positively rend your heart with their lamentations…”
@ Filias:
Novil has said previously that this is not going to happen.
Of course, the “responsible” thing for her to have done would have been to either euthanize or adopt the cubs. Or find someone else to adopt the cubs.
I will point out that folks were not up in arms that time Woo and Shadow reached into a hole in the ground and scarfed down the mouse couple we got to see cowering in the back of their den. And there was cheering when Woo ate Tweety.
unscrupulous killer…yet.
Gasp! They’re holding hands! They must be dating!
the unscrupulous killer kills for sport. while she has every intention to eat at least part of her prey, that makes her scrupulous indeed
No, the problem is when you realize you *are* one, and have to deal with the consequences.
@ DanialArin:
That’s because Tweety is an asshole.
Ruth should adopt those cubs then, right?! Or am I the only one who thinks so?……. Then again, those cubs probably wouldn’t too happy about it, huh…. :/
I hope she gives that meat away for someone else to eat, otherwise the mama-Lynx’s death would’ve been in vain.
If she decided to addopt the cubs she would need to kill alot more just to feed two big and growing predators, and then where would she be with her twisted morals?
you can’t make an omlete without breaking eggs = unborn bird children. thats just how life on Earth works. and being vegetarian is not really an escape from this principle. I never heard anyone cries over plucked flowers, or eaten seeds, and plants are just as alive as animals.
if she eats nuts without a thought she should be able to eat cubs without remorse.
the only way to truely not cause harm while getting energy to survive is be photosynthetic and no animal figured that out yet.
maybe she could take the cubs to that woman who raised sid and shadow
I love the third panel. There’s a lot of emotion in it.
@ DanialArin:
Unfortunate. They seem to get along swell. Though I guess they are friends and there’s that.
I was just thinking how it’s unlikely Sid will ever find a mate as his species is all across the Atlantic. And with her reputation as the “insane squirrel” predator, it seems unlikely Ruth would find a mate, either..
That’s almost like my reaction to half the stuff my girlfriend says to me, usually the stuff involving rights and politics or a story she’s rewritten about fifty times. Don’t tell her I said that. 😛
Why use “unscrupulous” when there’s “ruthless”?
Thank you Sandra and Woo for extending my vast and ever-growing vocabulary with unscrupulous.
I like this turn of events, because it makes people think, or at least -should- make people think. IMO this comic is not about not eating meat, its about killing being a bad thing. Everyone has a family. Gang violence is bad. War is bad. Think about their kids, no matter how different you may think they are.
Seen from an other perspective, this is deeply ironic. After all, Ruth is a meat eating squirrel, not for survival but because she is feeling smug over other animals. She is kind of an inverted vegan human. And now she is feeling doubts about her way of life… think about that!
If I see one more person mention cubs I think I am going to start screaming. They are “Kits/kittens”. Feline.. Damn it people, come on. Get your anthropology in order.
But still, slightly cruel, but a good take on modern society.
I don’t think she should completely give up meat. Just do a little more research before shooting down any old thing. Some things deserve to die, some things need to die, and some things want to die. No matter what death is unavoidable

She did not die in vain; simply by dying she saved Ruth’s life, and that of countless other small mammals.
And suddenly I’m in the mood for a burger…
@ Old Brit:
Yeah, I don’t really get why everyone else seems to think it was a kill for food – including, apparently, the squirrel herself – when it was clearly self-defense.
The food was just a ‘lucky’ side-effect
Leave us not forget that the Lynx attacked Ruth and she defended herself. A panel showing the cute little kits devouring Ruth’s corpse wouldn’t have the same ‘Awwww’ factor, now would it?
Humans over-anthropomorphize animals that they like all the time. In a strip such as this, such things are canon. Animals are still animals however and ruled by their instincts; including self preservation when attacked. Fortunately, for us anyway,, they’re not all packing heat like Ruth. 😉
@ Omega:
It’s cubs actually ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_lynx#Reproduction_and_life_cycle )
@ Filias:
Sure, they can mate. But can they produce offspring?
@ DanialArin:
that was because by nature shadow and woo are carnivores in shadows case that all they can eat.
I like this comic, but PLEASE give us some closure on those bobcat cubs.

I’m sure they can. Just Google “Liger” it’s a cross between male Lion and female Tiger. It’s way bigger and stronger.
@ AckAckAck:
As far as I know it’s also pretty much sterile (at least the males) and has most of the times other disabilities from birth, plus with his weight that he can’t exactly support? I think I read that somewhere so yeah, he’s bigger, heavier and stronger, but he’s also utterly ‘useless’ to support himself in the wild and he can’t reproduce anyway.
@ Ratzmaus:
Actually, Ligers are often found to be fairly healthy. It is reported that the main reason they likely don’t occur in the wild is that tiger and lion habitations no longer overlap, but some ancient myths and folktales are thought to be remnants of ligers from times when they had.
Just like those polar/grizzly bear hybrids. For a long time people just thought it was an extinct bear fossil, until they actually found one in canada.
I wonder if Ruth will give up being a predator for good? If so, I could see Sid helping her learn (or relearn) prey survival skills.
I just realized Sid’s last line as a double meaning. He could be saying indeed to the fact that never being a predator, he doesn’t know what that feels like or indeed to the fact that Ruth is a squirrel she is not, by nature, a killer.
@ Filias:
Maybe he just wants a neighbor more than a mate right now. They only met a short while ago, maybe a month in their time
@ AckAckAck:
I thought we were talking about squirrel species!
Uh, Ruth. You do know TRUE predators (which you are not) have no choice when it comes to food. Whether their next meal has offspring or not can’t have an impact on their choice (unless it is to choose the offspring as the meal, in which the parent may disagree).
Nihau wrote:
You’ve got your facts confused, I think. First of all, the eggs we eat aren’t baby chickens- they’re not fertile eggs and therefore could never grow into chickens. Second, plants aren’t as alive as animals- they don’t feel, think, or act on their own accord. They only react to their environment, which doesn’t really count as living.
Is Sid going to score??
Someone has to say it, so it might as well be me…
At least we now know Ruth isn’t ruthless. 😉
XMinusOne wrote:
That would be true if Ruth had simply been on her way somewhere, or resting, or enjoying the scenery, etc.
But I believe Ruth was hunting. She set a trap with herself as the bait: sitting on a rock with her gun ready, in a small clearing where predators could see her and she’d have a clear shot at any approaching predator. She planned to kill the first predator that came along. Waiting for her prey to attack first does not make it self defence.
On the other hand, Ruth wasn’t a cold-blooded murderer either. She killed for the same reason as any other predator: for food. The only reason it seems “wrong” is that we think of squirrels as nut-eaters. Most people don’t realize that squirrels have been known to supplement their diet with insects, eggs, small birds, snakes, lizards, and mice.
Woo? Sid? Is that you? 😉

@ DontLookAtMe:
You are right about the hunting bit.
I am not so sure about the squirrel diet, though. Rodents tend to be scavengers and gatherers, but not hunters. I have seen squirrels eat insects and eggs, but I am not so sure about birds, snakes, and lizards (all of which could turn the tables on the rodent).
And I have seen mice co-existing with squirrels.
@ Idon’tspeakscottish:
Our eggs from the supermarket may be eggs that were never fertilized, but most eggs eaten in nature are fertilized, and no animal will pause to check… And frankly I didn’t mean it quite that litterally. I was hoping to be understood more metaphorically.
as for plants, ther has been enough research to show that plants are able to do more than react to their environment, and they are definitly able to act on their own accord… and quite nastily too, albeit in a more quiet fasion than animals.
regardless, its every person’s private choice and opinion how to see life on Earth. I choose to see myself as part of the whole ecosystem, and try not to mix human social moral codes with the everyday reality of nature at large.
Aw, this one hurt me man. Trigger warnings could be a good thing… I hope my call will have an answer.
This strip and the one before and after have to be the most disgusting thing I’ve seen posted here. There was no good moral or point, it was simply stupidity and making light of a tragic situation. I’m not sure I can look at this strip the same as I used to and I definitely won’t be recommending it to others again for a long while, if ever.
Haha, and this is why I’m glad I’m vegan! :3 (Definitely not saying you shouldn’t eat meat — if you like it, it’s fine by me, it’s all just preference, so no offence intended here!)
And I haven’t said it yet, but I think I’ve enjoyed every strip of the comic so far (started 2 days ago) and I just love it!! : )
@Someone I agree. You already have blood on your paws (both literally AND metaphorically), so why not just get it over with, and eat it? You probably won’t to eat Lynx meat ever again, but still.
@ Ratzmaus:
Actually ligers display the phenomenon known as hybrid vigor when a hybrid strain displays greater strength, endurance and fertility than either parent strain. Best of both worlds. They can mate with other ligers and produce offspring and it’s been repeated up to at least four generations.
This proves that lions and tigers are different racial strains of the same species just like different races of humans.
