[0512] The Duel

Oh no, it’s that guy! Go check out Gunnerkrigg Court if you want to see more of him!
- Sir James Eglamore: Not bad. But I bet you can still learn one or two things from me.
- Cloud: Or you from me.
- Sir James Eglamore: Where I come from, sassy back talk is usually punished with five laps.
- Cloud: What about a deal? The loser has to do ten laps!
- Sir James Eglamore: A student begging for a harsher punishment? Now I’ve seen it all!
- Mr. Walch: Here! Paragraph 17, section 2, explicitly forbids any kind of duel between teachers and students, in particular–
- Sir James Eglamore: What did I just say about sassy back talk!? Five laps, and be quick about it!
School regulation can’t get in the way of epic things!
I’d be more confused about why they would have rules like that if I didn’t remember Cloud and Larrisa go to that school.
STAY OUT OF THIS, MARIO
Cloud should be happy he isn’t dueling Jones. 🙂
Muhahahaha! Brilliant! 😀 There’s no room for rules lawyers in this strip!
I wonder what happens if the contest ends in stalemate? Five laps each? 🙂
I must say… Thank you for introducing me to another interesting webcomic =D
So there is actually article that is particularly about duels between teacher and students?
So there were a precedent?
I am LOVING this.
I hope to see more of Eglamore in S&W
Also, since he was introduced as a teacher from their “Sister school”, does that mean that the kids’ school is associated with the Order too? Because whoa.
Those are some AWESOME battle panels! Powree is really on fire with this one.
Oh, and Cloud manages to graze Eglamore in the third panel! Does he have the upper hand, or is James only toying with him? Wait, don’t tell me! I’m gonna go read Gunnerkrigg now…
Have to compliment Powree on the art here. Great work.
To optimize your comic reading experience and amplify the levels of absolute badassery and epicness present, I invite you to open this link in a new tab and let it play as BGM:

Wow, his name is Sir James Eglamore? Dude’s a friggin’ KNIGHT!? I was going to say how much I loved this guy, but after noticing that, I can no longer describe how much I love him as a character. XD
If that school have that kind of rule then then my hunch is right. There are some secrets the school not yet revealed.
Probably there’s going to be a student exchange program too?
I LOVE this cross-over!
No, no, no, NO!!! The far-more-important unwritten rules state that something has to happen to that rulebook at this point! It must catch fire, be shredded, either with weapons or telekinetically, be frozen and shattered, be consumed by giant wasps, or something of that sort of nature! Action cannot proceed until this happens. Where are you, Larisa?! The story needs you!! >:=)>
Where do I find where he comes from? And how can I go there?
There should be one teacher like this in every school!

There is a link just under the cartoon itself. Click on the name of the strip to trigger the link.
The top row of panels is SO EPIC *o*
Very dynamic drawings. Great job!
I took a class in sword fighting once. It was awesome.
hmmm gonna follow that webcomic…looks good too…
also…loved the action on the top panels….rlly well done…
@ illeatyourself:
Read the comic. His position is so much better than just “knight”.
I wonder if this crossover is canon for GKC

When I first red “optimize your comic reading experience” I though you were a spam-bot. Well, that got sorted out when I finished reading the sentence.
Still looks like Eglamore is sorta asian.

Larisa goes to this school. Who knows what other rules theyhave.
Technically, absolutely blocking with a blade instead of seeking to deflect and shift is bad swordplay when against someone of presumably higher mass. :3
Else your form fails and the blade is driven up against you, which may be unhealthy or detrimental for any immediate need for parrying in the future.
EPICNESS!!!!!!!!! Eglamore is awesome ^_^ I’d love to see a crossover with GC too!!! EVEN MORE EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the good work 🙂
Welp, thanks to these 2 comics I went through and read through all of Gunnerkrigg Court in 2 days…
@kobrag i would guess Cloud has been trained in japanese swords fighting techniques 🙂 (which are single edged) compared to double edged swords like the ones those training swords are based upon 🙂
anyway, i would guess it’s not a wonder their techniques are not correctly matched 🙂 each type of sword having been made with particular fighting techniques in mind 🙂
I read teacher’s speech bubbles in thick posh accent. Epicness X 100
School regulations? Seriously? In all of the wold of fiction, who’s ever paid heed to them?
@ Auriga: That was a fantastic idea!!!
In reality, Medieval sword fighting includes punching, kicking, and shield bashing.
Am I the only one who feels the Eglamore is acting weird here? I mean, if he would punish sassy backtalk with five laps in GC, some of the main characters in that comic would be marathon runners by now.
Anyone else a bit concerned this came up enough they added a rule to forbid it?
@ pip25:
One: He says “usually,” not always or for every time.
Two: the main characters in his comic are pretty unique, even among each other.
Three: He never said he punished that way.
Four: This fight is cool.
duel starts then they clash and stops at Round 1.
…since when is Eglamore a knight?
Oh my gosh.
I love Gunnerkrigg Court (and Sandra and Woo, of course!).
My life has just been made.
YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND MY LOVE OF CROSSOVERS.
*squee!*
Let’s hope Coyote doesn’t want to meet with anyone for the next week.
That final line made me laugh out loud.
Why do I get the feeling that Cloud is about to really embarrass that teacher and make him run ten laps *laughing out loud*
The best duels are the ones where the duelists are clearly forming a camaraderie mid-duel. ^_^
This comic: Officially the most epic battle scene at Sandra and Woo?
Also, mayby this leads in to Cloud, Sandra(possibly Woo, too(I wonder if Sandra will let Woo talk in Gunnerkrigg Court?)) and Larisa(?) going for a visit at Gunnerkrigg Court?
@ Vorlonagent:
for sure. Jones would wipe the floor with BOTH of them (she already has done so with James).
I wonder how Cloud would fare if he met Coyote… or Larisa met him.
I am certain Larisa and Anne would get along famously. BOTH have a thing for fire.
…is totally fine with this!
If he’s “Mr. Englamore” from England, why does he look japanese, wear chinese clothing and use a long sword that is way too short for him?
@ Kobrag:
They are obviously using stage-fencing. Nothing unusual about that, as proper longsword teachers are hard to come by.
@ oak:
I haven’t read that comic, but they said he is a teacher at a school in England, not that he came from England. Maybe he is from Japan, prefers that style of clothing, and then moved to England?
I think Annie and Larisa would get along incredibly well. Lar has a thing for fire, and Annie is a fire elemental (mostly). Put them in the same room and watch the sparks fly (literally!)
And wouldn’t a conversation between Coyote and Seeoahtlahmakaskay be interesting??
