Check out the great fantasy/sci-fi comic Gunnerkrigg Court by Tom Siddell if you want to see more of Sir James Eglamore!
- Sir James Eglamore: There’s an important lesson to be learned here!
- Cloud: Which is?
- Sir James Eglamore: Never let your guard down!
|
I had found more fun if it was the other way around.
Knowing Cloud, that defeat and punishment just make him STRONGER!
@ chrisjenl:
Yeah, but Cloud is still the student and James the teacher, I find it more fitting this way P=
Didn’t really expect Cloud to win…but James you buttmunch.
Also, it looks like the Janitor WAS doing his laps and not just getting out of the way.
not fair
Touche pussycat!
oh maaaaaaaaaaaaan…..to think he would use that trick on a kid, even if it’s cloud….that’s not very fair xD
I like this ending. The only way Sir James could beat the mighty Cloud was to cheat! 😉
I find this absolutely hilarious. I can see Sir James doing this with all his students. And it’s a great lesson for Cloud. I doubt he’ll let his guard down again, especially around Sir James.
I just finished reading all 43 complete chapters of Gunnerkrigg Court thanks to this arc. Thanks. 😉
@ ‘Thias:
I LOL’ed when you called their gym instructor a janitor :))
@ mario:
No, all is fair in combat, a lesson that needs to be learned….in a real situation, when your life is on the line, it is real-life ‘no disqualification, no rules’…..i think Ye Thuza would concur…
as Gen Patton once observed “The object in war is not for you to die for your country…the object is to make the other guy die for his.” If Cloud does go back to help in Ye’s homeland at some point, that lesson may save his life and allow him to safely return to Sandra

That was really underhanded. Does not fit with characterization of JimmyJims.
But… he didn’t say “un-pause”
Those poor hearts never even stood a chance…
@ Ajedi32:
Me too! I have even ordered the 4 books of the series. Instant fan i guess. 🙂
strange behaviour: if you click the “previous” link, the previos strip appears without the “next” link =/
@ Antonio R:
ok now there is the link 😀
@ Lyserg.Z:
That was not the janitor, the Cloud’s usual PE teacher. I guess he has to get back in shape.
How does that go? Youth and enthusiasm will never overcome experience and treachery. Yeah that fits.
Eglamore, you jerk! >_<
Can’t believe no one else has said it yet…
All’s fair in love and war!
A bit anticlimactic for Cloud, but really, he never had a chance.
Take a look here: http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2013/09/26/0514-klonk/
Eglamore said “Now, observe!” and then immediately gave Cloud trouble. This is not a thing you can do if you’re just a little bit better than your opponent. If you are only little better, you could end up in a situation where after saying “Now, observe!” it takes you over half a minute before you have an opening. Eglamore knew that right after he said that, he would have an opening. The only way he could possible know that is if he’s so much better he has an opening pretty much every second.
It was rather foolish of Cloud to make that deal. Hopefully he learns not only not to let his guard down, but also some humility.
Finishing move! Poke of Injustice!
That, is exactly what a good martial arts teacher should do. Never let your guard down after a fight until you are certain it is over, and have made certain of it

although all fairs in combat, this was more of a sparring match between 2 swordsmen.there’s no honorable victory in such a match from a cheep-shot. theres no honor in a cheep-shot period.
Rule Two – Cheat and Win!
I’d say it was cheating, but it was in fact teaching…
That just now was a pun, wasn’t it? This whole storyline is one big pun, isn’t it?
Also, I hope it doesn’t turn out to be a dream sequence or a big-lipped alligator moment and WILL be referenced again. “Hey, Cloud remember that one time when you were attacked by vile hearts with that British swordsman?”
*screams from mountain tops* EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEGGGGGGGGGGLLLAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOORRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
That is all.
Gotta love the cheap shots…
@ yumi03:
oops
I don’t know where my mind was
Evil floating hearts are one thing, but what I don’t understand is how an ordinary American school got partnered with Gunnerkrigg Court.
@ Plaid Wolf:
Ah, but this was not combat training, this was a sporting duel, a test of skill. As such, basic rules of sportsmanship apply. Had they been engaged in a training session, James would have been perfectly correct to end the match in the way he did. This was not the case, however. What James did was pull a cheap shot and abuse his position of authority to declare himself the “winner” of a test of skill. Cloud has every right to be pissed, and not at himself.
Eglamore you meanie. Teach Cloud the way you do with Parley….. or Jones 🙂
What, no boxbot cameo?

Who said anything about ‘honour’? This was just a sparing match, just because they teamed up against a common enemy, Cloud shold not have forgotten what they were doing prior
Also: would love to see return match between Jimmie and Cloud’s mother (while she would probably respect Jimmie’s lesson, no-one beats her son… except her ;))
Remember that scene from Enter The Dragon, where Bruce Lee instructs a martial arts student to never take your eyes off your opponent, even when you bow.
@ mario:
That’s five laps for you.

Not really. It was incredibly cocky of Cloud to challenge a visiting master the way he did, which demands a harsh response. While he never really showed that side to Sandra, it seems his skill was starting to go to his head. Hopefully he’ll take this lesson to heart. (No pun intended)
I should have seen that coming.
