- Edward: See you soon, Larisa.
- Larisa: Bye.
- Edward: Your warnings were more than justified. Larisa is a wild girl.
- Edward: But she seems to have her heart in the right place.
- Landon: You think, dad?
- Edward: I do.
- Edward: Your mother, on the other hand…
- Priest: The Catholic Church no longer burns witches, madam.
- Harriet: Not even in crystal clear cases?!

Riiiight, asking someone over the phone to commit first degree murder.
Fun.
Larisa has experience with burning.
Now I’d like to know what Landon told them…
Cool dad, though.

See Larisa? You DO have something in common with Landon’s mom.
I noticed that on the last comic the “next” and “Latest” links are missing.
Also -as was to be expected- Larisa left quite the impression.

Stop focusing so hard on the negative aspects of something. Think positive. She just wants to be nice to Larisa by making her part of a big fire. (jk)

Probably something like “She’s a great girl but she’s kinda “out there”
There are so many things wrong with that phone call, I don’t even know where to begin.
Awwww darn it, you guys beat me to the burning witches/Larisa’s pyromania joke! No fair…
Yeah I’m just gonna LOVE her.
There are many words I would use to describe Larisa, not all of them nice ones even though I really like the character. But “witch” definitely doesn’t feature among them.
But then “witches” more often than not just happened to be anyone with a behaviour you weren’t used to. Or just didn’t like, depending on how careful accusations were treated in the respective parts. So Larisa’s pretty much on par if that’s how you want to distinguish them.
On another note: I really like Landon’s dad! Calm, tolerant and with a good head on his shoulders, yet not seems to be irresponsible or easily manipulated.
(Mind you that while in the previous comic, he did have a glass or two, he was still rather clear of mind. Enough to stay fully fluent in his language and be able to recall things by heart in a heartbeat. He did let Larisa pour wine, but not drink it. And he was pretty much just checking out what she was up to.)
You wouldn’t believe how much Landon’s parents physically resemble my own parents! And a little bit their personalities, too, hehe.
Harriet: Look, I can prove it! She weighs the same as a duck – when she’s forced to do bar exercises! And she turned my husband into a patsy!
Later…
Harriet (to mobile): Hello, yes, right, further to our previous conversation, I am trying the old water test. She’s in the pond now, and if I recall correctly, the water will reject her if she is a witch, but she will sink and drown and not be able to date my son anyway if she isn’t. So, what does it indicate if she sinks under water, but doesn’t drown? I mean, there must be something wrong about her… she’s standing on the bottom now, waving at me!
Larisa: I think I’ll go for a walk!
Harriet: YOU’RE NOT FOOLING ANYONE, YOU KNOW! X-(
More Python references FTW! >:=)>
“Your mother, on the other hand…” “… is a psychotic monster of whom I live in perpetual fear. I’d divorce her but I fear she would kill us both in a fit of apoplectic turbochristian rage.”
What impresses me the most is that Edward has already recovered from his consumption of alcohol, judging by the lack of the shaded nose.
Gas Bandit wrote:
Well, the catholic church doesnt…exactly…recognize divorce
@ Derpamon:
More like third degree… get it… because fire…?
There’s probably a reason why I’m the first person to make this comment.
@ Gas Bandit:
“Sorry madam. Especially not in crystal clear cases. While we no longer burn witches here at the Catholic Church, I would like to assure you that our burning skills have not gone rusty. As you might not realize, madam, crystal clear cases, especially if well-constructed, are not permeable to air. A fire that is set alit inside a crystal clear case is soon extinguished. We take great pride in our burning skills. Anyone condemned to burn at the stake is to burn and not suffocate at the stake.”
Yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyup this comic makes total sense. Yeeeeeeeeaaup
Also um Harriet Larissa has the ability flash flare. So burning her would only restore her health.

Larisa the pyromaniac Pokemon although they prefer drawing peaceful art if provoked they burn enemies with scorching heat. Proceed with caution.
There is nothing crystal clear about Larisa being a witch. She has not invoked demons or anything of the sort.
Now that Sandra and Woo’s universe is connected in some way to Gunnerkrigg Court, I suppose it’s possible that Larisa is related to Antimony. Which would, after all, explain one or two things …

Holy smooth moves Batman! 😀@ Sarusig:
Actually, one item on Jeopardy! indicated that witches were never burned at the stake. They were always hung, because “witches had made a deal with the devil and were therefore immune to fire.”
How exactly do you “burn” Larisa?
Gas Bandit wrote:
I would love to post a clever comment but all I can think about is Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
A part of me no longer thinks Larisa is the crazy one. Another part of me knows it’s easy to simplify something when next to an extreme. In other words, I’m impressed Landon’s mom succeeded in that.
I found this strip a lot more funny than I probably should have. Also, fire and violence? I’m surprised Landon’s mother doesn’t like Larissa (jk)
@ Frank:
must make it confusing when a person does do divorce and then remarry in the legal system.
@ Lucario:
Lucario wrote:
That’s not true at all. If that’s what Jeopardy said, then they got their facts mixed up somehow. Burning at the stake was indeed a very common punishment for witches, for centuries and across many different regions. Of course, it wasn’t the same everywhere, but it was very common. A quick check on Google or Wikipedia will tell you all about this history.
Derpamon wrote:
It is interesting to note that the denomination that burned witches were the Puritans. The Catholic Church had nothing to do with it.
@ Lukkai:
Witches: …or had property you wanted.
My first comment ^_^
While I generally like your webcomic, there was one thing I needed to say about
todays one: The catholic church wasn’t into witch-burnings.. While members of the church advocated it, it itself was seen as heresy (since burning a witch means you believe in pagan
magic and believing that power can come from another source than god was blasphemy)
If you went to the spanish inquisition with the accusation that someone is a withc it was much much more likely to suffer yourself – for promoting heresy..
People tend to claim every evil thing in the middleages was the churchs fault as if the people
of that time were some sort of hive-mind oO
Dang, any thought I may have had about Harriet having a reasonable excuse for her attitude is NOW gone.
Edward is standing there fully sober just moments after having indications of being drunk, so it seems he was not actually drunk.
It seems Landon warned his parents Larisa is a bit… unusual… but she actually impressed a reasonable person with her ‘good heart’ (which we readers know she has).
Harriet is simply an opinionated, idiotic, fool.
*facepalms* Harriet is the worst kind of ‘christian’. And I use the term Christian in this case very loosely.
Not really accurate at all as the Catholic Church never burned witches…
As mentioned before, the catholic church had only a small role in the trials of witches in the mediavel age. The “Hexenhammer” was written by a dominican monk, but used mostly by wordly authorities.
And if these trials were still proceeded… I think Edward would be a single again since a long time with such a wife, because a lot of husbands got rid of their furies by accusing them as witches.
Burning Larissa? But she’s in good term with fire. Burning her simply turn into…… friendly fire.
Burning witches? She should invite Larissa, she loves a good fire.
@ Mariah:
Villagers burned Witches not the church.
I thought it was heretics they burned at the stake, not witches.
Exhibit A: Edward – How Christians are SUPPOSED to react to people who don’t hold their same belief system and values.
Exhibit B: Harriet – How Christians USUALLY react to people who don’t hold their same belief system and values.
Echon wrote:
And the biggest problem with that is how Exhibit B is the type most seen.
Which is really annoying for a Christian doing his best to be of the Exhibit A variety.
Landon’s mother: Born in Salem.
So, Larisa is good with Landon’s dad. His mom though is just… well, let’s just say she’s one of the people I think of when I think of the evil’s of humanity. Seriously, witch burnings? Salem this is not.
“M’am, in case you hadn’t noticed the pope is trying to be kind of progressive these days. Please stop calling, we beg you.”
I wonder if Landon would have a similar double life to Dexter in Dexter’s Laboratory. (As in having a secret laboratory, doing experiments, and having deals with NASA.)
That would be cool, but it might be harder to develop jokes for that kind of story…
Ah, well…
She can ignore the laws of physics, so I’m reasonably certain she’d also be immune to fire.
