[0605] Teenage Pregnancy
└ posted on Thursday, 7 August 2014, by Novil
- Caption: Sandra and Woo characters on avoiding teenage pregnancy.
- Richard: The 28-pill packet contains seven placebo pills. This way, you automatically remember when to begin the next packet.
- Lily: Can a 13-year-old female even have kits still?
- Woo: Very doubtful.
- Larisa: Don’t be irresponsible, Landon! If we wait another month, you’ll knock up a teenage girl!
- Ye Thuza: If you get Sandra pregnant before she’s finished high school, I’ll separate your head from your body.
@ bogwombler:
When my daughter was about 3 her numbers included eleventeen, twelveteen, and otherteen.
Her usage was not consistent enough for me to figure out what value otherteen was supposed to have.
I think Ye Thuza’s is the best approach . . . I can think of another line to add to it . . . “And just so you know, in this context ‘head’ does NOT refer to that portion of your anatomy with eyes, ears nose and mouth!”

Choice? What choice? Can anyone remember Larissa giving Landon anything even remotely resembling a choice?
Still, he’s a lucky guy…
@ Ominous:
Mine were taken daily and stopped the evil time of month. I love them.
Gah! Larisa, what’s the matter with you?! Poor Landon barely survived the last system crash he had…
I can’t comment on the Female portion of this. I raised 4 boys. I would guess that you would need a different approach then I used. I can say that the last panel does work. As long as they Know that it’s not a bluff. They can tell. Even then they get the Idea.

I don’t agree with your interpretation of the last panel. The way I read it Ye Thuza is specifically talking about pregnancy, not sex. So she’s telling Cloud that relying on the cycles method, do the pull out or just leaving it to Sandra is not an option. Knowing what we do about her it’s fairly safe she’s explained the mechanics of reproduction and the available options for preventing both pregnancy and venereal diseases in excruciatingly embarrassing detail to Cloud. I also see Yuna sitting in on this, taking immense joy in seeing her brother being embarrassed by the subject.
For some reason I picture Yuna as growing up to be a girl that is as forward and self assured as Larissa, but with the values and self control of Ye Thuza. I also think that when her time comes she’ll be on the prowl for a partner that’s something of a mix between Sandra and David, someone that will stand proud beside her. And that was quite off topic… even for these comments…
I sure did! 🙂
Okay….just a bit of clarification if possible.
In the third panel, is Larissa actually trying to get Landon in bed for real? I mean, that’s now a cannon thing?
I’m not mad or anything; it seems like something Lar would do if the mood struck her. It just is kind of a ‘wow’ moment that we’d see something like this point blank in the comic. Don’t get me wrong: I’m by NO means a prude; kids have sex-it happens. I just was taken aback to see it in panel and it be a ‘real, it happened’ kind of thing.
Pretty sure Landon said no the first time, considering Larissa counter-arguing him with her statement. But if she’s going to pull out the big guns (so to speak) I’m not sure them, combined with Larissa sheer will-power and personality, won’t do poor Landon’s willpower a fatal blow.
Aren’t the characters kinda young to put them into these situations? I mean, It does happen IRL but it’s unsettling to imagine them as people who have sex… they’re just kids, they barely qualify as teens.
So Larisa will be thirteen in a month? Good luck avoiding her advances on you, Landon. XD
Ye Thuza: the only 100% effective method of contraception known to man.

Larisa is Larisa and Sandra and Cloud aren’t in a sexual situation yet. Being told how to avoid an unwanted pregnancy doesn’t put you into a sexual situation by itself. That the parents tell Sandra and Cloud how to (or merely just to) avoid an unwanted pregnancy also doesn’t imply they are actually having sex.
Parents can not know things like “my child will make her sexual debut in two years and five months, so I can wait two more years before even worrying about it.” This means you cannot take a parent teaching a child how to avoid unwanted pregnancy as a sign that the child will have sex soon. It’s very likely that the child then waits, say three years, before having sex for the first time.
Shouldn’t this comic have shown Sandra and Larissa having their first menstruation before this episode? You know, like, first things first?
Loving the number of different perspectives in this strip. Brilliant.
…also, I’d like to know whether fight or flight won in Landon’s head.
@ Ominous:
Exactly. They are often iron supplements to make up for the blood loss on heavier ones, too.
@ John Willow:
I doubt we’ll find out exactly what happened, though I was hoping for a little more, bringing back that teacher who was dragged away at the start of that arc. Personally I think it’s most effective the way it was done, a simple puff and disappeared forever, leaving a mystery behind. Which is the only use that creature was good for. Sure would like to know how Ye Thuza did it though, there’s a few people I have the misfortune to know who NEED to vanish!
@ Lukkai:
13. The reason is quite easy:
It’s ten, eleven, twelve, thirTEEN, fourTEEN, etc. So only numbers containing the “-teen” part make you a teenager…
@ Troll Science Man:
Seriously? “Babies will be jelly”? “AIDS” jokes? Dude, sick.
Time is a valuable resource and a potent enemy. Waste it, and it will waste you.
@ Jumtrev:
She went *puff* and will never be heard from again. You read the previous strips right? Ye Thuza said what would happen if she didn’t change course. Do the details of how Ye Thuza managed the silent murder and corpse disposal really matter?
Congratulations Landon, you won. Didn’t expect this strip to go that far with characters this young, but looks like the writer is starting to introduce some more mature themes.
@ John Willow:
Go back 2 strips. Cambridge met with an unfortunate, non-Ye-Thuza related accident. The official and totally truthful story.
YAY! Woo is back! Man, how long has this strip been more “Larisa/Cloud and friends??”
@ Jabberwock:
“Shark Week” I guess that makes you the prey one week a month?
@ The J.A.M.:
Yes. Yes she is. *drools*
@ Rarefoil:
I think it is more of a get in the habit of taking a pill everyday thing. If there were no placebo pills, she might forget to start again.
I like Ye Thuza’s method best. >w<
Ha! I knew it! You’re trolling your own audience!
Getting sick of the crazy in the comments and decided to try and burn it out? 😉
Funny though, particularly Larissa (who I am certain has no interest in being a teen mom), and Ye Thuza.

I suggest: firsteen, seconteen, thirteen …
I’ve finally read them all and have caught up
Just don’t… you know, “do it.” It’s not that hard.
Especially if you can’t get a girlfriend, like me.
Awww, I made myself sad.
Has no one noticed the joke for Larisa’s panel is:
to avoid ‘knocking up a teenager’, she has to do it *before* she’s a teenager.
Larisa is just using clear logic, not sense.
Goal: avoid being knocked up as a teen
Solution: don’t be a teen (yet)
She misses other points in the blind rush to find her solution: (actually getting pregnant, underage activity being considered even worse than the original problem, etc.)
Tunnel Vision. Solve exact/immediate problem, ignore all other concerns.
(also, she seems to really want to do these things. being more ‘mature than her age’ can get her in trouble)
That startling moment when you remember they’re all still twelve.
The last panel is entirely accurate for modern Asian mothers. I’ve certainly had that threat before.
And this is why I think that Landon’s going to be good for Larisa.
Given the way Ye Thuza holds her sword, is she actually threatening Novil?
@ Landbark:
Well, the fact they don’t age isn’t true at all.
If you look at the first strip, Sandra looks quite a bit younger than she does now.
I’d say she was 7-9 years old then, and 12-14 now.
I guess it’s only a matter of time to see them pregnant.
If I ever become a parent I’ll probably follow Ye Thuza’s example. Teach ’em responsibility and put the fear of parent into them!
@ Anime fan:
A bit harsh, but probably quite efficient.
That is so funny. It put a big smile on my face. Thanks for sharing.@ John:
So I recently found Sandra and Woo.
Sadly, I cannot claim to have read it in a single night. (Mainly because I actually take the time to read the comments, I have a weekend job and weekday obligations, and catching up in the 600s is harder than catching up in the 500s is harder than catching up in the 300s is harder than catching up in the hundreds is harder than catching up in the thirties.)
However, though I am a bit disappointed that I will now have to wait for new Sandra and Woo, I must say, I am incredibly happy at the same time to have read such a wonderful story, and look forward to reading future updates and hopefully getting comments in on them earlier.
In the mean time…off to read Gaia!
I was always hoping Lily and Woo would have kits eventually…you know, after all of the ‘father to all my kits’ thing.
@ Ominous:
Yeah, haven’t you ever heard of birth control pills? You take the placebo ones, which I believe are just sugar or something, so that you stay in the habit of taking them but your period can still happen. They do offer some that don’t have placebos, which means no period, but those are rare and tend to have more consequences. Though, I will say most of the ones I hear about only have 4 fake pills, not seven. Girls don’t have week long periods unless something’s wrong, which means the cycle starts again a lot sooner than those pills would…
…it just occurred to me that, if Larisa really has something worse than diabetes that she knows she’s likely to die young from… it’s possible that she might view early pregnancy as something to embrace. (Assuming it’s not an easily inheritable condition.)
Woohoo, we’re back in humor town. Please stay in there longer this time, comic. Pleeeease.

Oh, come on, the ‘canon’ thing is that Larisa is teasing him, and Landon passes out (‘bluescreen of doom’) before anything remotely serious could actually happen.
Thirteen/Twelve year olds having sex already?! Wow they are kind of stupid aren’t they. That is kind of creepy.
@ Kat:
Actually, it’s increasingly common. Also, hormones.
Larisa’s is kind of disturbing Oo;
And Clouds sound like what my parents have told me lol
For some reason, I find the implication of Larisa and Landon either going to have sex for the first time here or have ALREADY had sex before and doing it again to be……adorable and endearing.
