Patreon campaign for Sandra and Woo
After all these years, the day has come where we (Novil + Powree) have to ask you to support us financially to make sure that we can continue to make our comic Sandra and Woo. Therefore we’ve decided to start a Patreon campaign for Sandra and Woo. We’ve never had any luck selling merchandising so advertising revenues are currently our only source of income from the comic. And, as you can see in the header image, those have really gone downhill during the last months. While Powree is still able to buy something to eat every day, I believe that she and I deserve a bit more than that for our hard work every month.
You’ll also get some neat rewards in return for your monthly contribution. You can check out all available reward levels on the Patreon page and select your preferred one. To collect some of the rewards, you’ll have to create an account on this website which is already set up for that. I have also already uploaded some of the promised stuff. If you have further questions, you can find more details on our FAQ page.
Here are some of the offered rewards:
- All ads disabled. (Bronze level)
- See new comic strips early. (Silver level)
- Download archives of all comics, drafts and other artwork. (Gold level)
- Comic strips in their original size. (Diamond level)
There are also milestones for the total pledge amount. You can see them in the left sidebar of the Patreon page. If the first three milestones are reached, we’ll commit ourselves to publish a certain number of strips for a certain time period. You can pledge more than the amount given for the highest reward level to make sure that the next milestone is reached.
By the way, our new diamond patrons will immediately be able to suggest a name for a female co-worker of Sandra’s dad Richard who has a good chance to become a semi-regular character like Landon.
Yours is the first plea for Patreon support that actually made me register. Good job.

Thank you. I spent a lot of time preparing the campaign.
@ Novil:
I’ve now signed up as well – so that’s another few currency units per month in the proverbial tip jar 🙂
Happy to support artists I appreciate.
🙂
Out of curiosity, why are your ad revenues in free fall? Are you getting less traffic overall, or are less people just clicking on ads, or what?

Normal advertising banners generally generate less and less money. That’s why you have all those obnoxious lay-over ads etc. on commercial websites.
The number of entirely new visitors is also going slowly down and those are particularly profitable.
@ Novil:
Hi I would rise recently I had to disable all the ads here. Not I don’t want to suppport you anymore but the loading time of the ads is going up and up. Youre page took sometime to 10x time to load than without it. usualy it is 3x the normal time.
I am very sorry that I couldn’t contribute because I am lacking finances too. All I could do is share this website to my friends (my whole school, in fact because I am a bit known). Will that help?

That surprises me because the ads on our website are loaded after the rest of the website has already been loaded.

Well, in the past there were quite a few browsers that loaded everything including background stuff (such as ads) before displaying anything, but since everyone uses latest up-to-date stuff now… clearly that is not the problem. [insert sarcastic smilie]
Just giving a note that I’ve never noticed any significant loadtimes anytime I’ve been here, so Opera is safe from that ‘trap’ at least.
Been a long-time reader, figured it wouldn’t hurt to throw a few dollars your way every month!
I really like this webcomic so you get my support on patreon.
I’ve read both Sandra and Woo and Gaia for quite awhile. So I don’t mind supporting them with a few dollars a month.
Wow! I was actually thinking about Patreon shortly after the last S&W update and was going to ask about it once the next comic was posted!
My favorite Patreon milestone goal is one made by Tom Siddell of Gunnerkrigg Court. For $500,000 per month, he will print and eat the entire comic.

This kills the cartoonist.
Your timing couldn’t have been better. I just signed up for Patreon two days ago to support another web comic I like. 🙂
@ Novil:
I think the cartoonist would have died of shock first when he found out he was making 6 million dollars a year.

That’s disturbing to hear. I wonder why. Maybe you’ve saturated the market you’re advertising to? I often see your ads repeatedly on the same sites… mostly other webcomics.
Stupid question. Am I missing a printed books of some of the stories?
Patreon did some very unfair stuff to the admin of 8chan so I won’t support that platform anymore. I might support a Gratipay campagn though.
Dunno if I wanna contribute something *every* month, but would be happy to make a one-shot donation. Have you got a tip jar link, or can I work that through Patreon, too? (Never mind answering, let me check first.)
Incredible…
Novil wrote:
may I suggest an option – how about ability to start the adds again even registering?
They could implicitly be down, but for me it would not matter I have fast enough connection.

Yes, there are not a lot of advertising opportunities left. And I don’t think it’s possible to more than double our current readership in any way. There’s just a natural limit of readers based on the comic’s content.
FDominicus wrote:
I don’t understand your question.

I’m not familiar with the details, but the outcome should not have been particularly surprising regarding the content of 8chan.

Patreon currently doesn’t offer one-time donations. But I may be able to offer some of the rewards to such donators. Please understand that I have to think about that for a while first.
Paeris Kiran wrote:
I don’t think I’ll do that.
Thank you so much for doing this. I am so happy I get to help support comics that I love.
You might get more money if you made the rewards more expensive. Maybe make other rewards that offer physical items, like a poster or something.
Could you elaborate on the milestones a bit? The difference between 7.5 pages per month and 8.5 pages per month isn’t very significant compared to the 3x difference between said funding goals.

My only thought after shipping the 25 poster packages: Never again!

Every milestone adds another year of updates. We’re currently not able in any way to update more than twice a week, but we *can* promise to continue working on our comic.
@ Novil:
Wait, so you mean there’s a possibility that sandra and woo might end after 2017?
Well, This is the first time i am a patreon. I couldn’t help because i love this series so much. I just wish i could donate more but i’m kinda broke and the dollar price in brazil nowadays is so damn high!
@ Novil:
I was wondering if one can buy the comic i printed form. And or make a one time donation.
Unfortunately I think the lower income is due to the frankly disgusting practice some ads have of late, noisy, in the way, distracting, you name it. So people at the very least turn off plugins automatically starting, because ads are those that use it most, or they use ad blocker, and both things hurt artists.
That said, ads here have never really been annoying, but yeah I had to add the site to exception list to make them load because other places ads are just annoying :(, and for some reason, the companies rather then going “maybe we should make our ads less annoying” they go “People aren’t watching our ads, lets make them more invasive and annoying and more of them!” which only causes more people to block, and again unfortunately hurt artists 🙁
@Novil: Following the emails I get, the thing seems to work quite well. Is there a plan to let the users of the German S&W-version in? I do not need the badge there, but access to the archive would be great 🙂

Yes. But first I have to take care of the English version. There’s still a lot of artwork that I need to upload and that’ll take a while to collect.
