[0709] Pandering To The Audience
└ posted on Thursday, 13 August 2015, by Novil
It’s So Meta, Even This Acronym!
- Zoey: Ugh! This author is the worst!
- Michelle: I thought you liked his books?
- Zoey: I liked the lively world and interesting characters in his early stuff, but now he’s just pandering to his audience in the worst way possible.
- Michelle: In what way?
- Zoey: The newest book in his series contains nothing but corny wish-fulfilling fantasies, as if it were lousy fanfiction.
- Zoey: What makes an author betray all his ideals like that?
- Michelle: Don’t let it bother you. There’ll always be spineless worms who easily succumb to the temptation of quick fame and money.
… but where’s the code indent style discussion?

If we ever gave you our approval, then what would you have left to hope for?

Score!
My first reaction was: what? Well, that came out of the blue, considering where we parted with this little story the last time.
Then I started reading and spotted the self-reference, or at least I think that’s what it is.
And then I began wondering about the interpretation. Is this canon now, or is it just another humorous aside? I guess we’ll see soon, but minor characters though Michelle and Zoey are, it would still be interesting to see at least a little more about what they have been up to.
Well, to date Zoey and Michelle are second in the “Which characters would you like to see more often?” poll, Yuna’s fourth, just behind her parents, while top spot is occupied by her brother.
But… but you *asked* us!
Nice
I…. I’m torn between laughing for the meta humour and squeeing from cuteness overload.
Well done!
So I’m guessing where we left off with Michelle burying her head under a pillow is because she realized she liked the kiss.
Either this is a fun and pandering cut-away OR someone is in for a rude alarm clock awakenng
Hmmm… Sounds like Zoey just read Twilight book four: Breaking Dawn.
Yes! This is what I want to see!
You just picked up a new Patreon backer.
You brilliant jerks! Selling out and giving the viewers what they wanted. We should all be ashamed for absolutely LOVING this comic strip.
…um… did I miss an update?
YEY. More lolita lesbian action. Pander to me!
you cheeky bitch i see you game 😉
I know that Zoey just came out couple of month ago but when did she get her girlfriend?
@ Auroro:
Off-screen, it seems.
Okay, this is just mean
Am I the only one who thinks he’s trolling us?
Zoey at least your favorite author doesn’t kill every character you come to love
@ Gamesman:
He’s definitely trolling us. As if our wishes would be fulfilled just like that.
Well, much as I like the idea that Michelle decided that she did like the kiss and that these two are shipped, I fear that it’s more a Zoey waking up in tears because it wasn’t true. But I hope not. Budding lesbians need love, too.
This is brilliant. Your funniest comic in a long, long time.
im more concerned if its a joke or cannon kiss. cannon wouldnt make sence though
@ Gamesman:
Nnnnnnnnnnnnn-ope! 🙂
I sort of hope this isn’t a dream, and we’re about to go into flashback mode.
(Though to be honest, my first thought was “were they just always like that?” I did know some nauseatingly twee pairs of platonic friends at that age.)
TIL writers are xkcd fans
Y-U-R-I Yeah !!!
Well, Zoey, it’s usually not the Author.
What all too frequently happens is that the Author has Finished with the story but, it Sold so well that the Publisher demands More of the Same Old, Same Old.
And refuses to even Consider publishing anything “New or Different” from that author.
Because “New or Different” is Risky. It Might Not Sell as Well.
Profits are Sacred to the Publisher.
So, the author looks at the kids College Fund (or lack thereof) and writes what the Publisher demands.
As a for instance, it’s why Conan Doyle Killed Off Sherlock Holmes.
Then, had to bring him Back to Life. They just wouldn’t let him Stay Dead.
.
The joke is most ironic.
Haha, Why does it seem like all my favorite shows, books, and comics are all run by trolls.
To be honest, this was my reaction to the Narnia books and to much of The Return of the King
Ah, to be young and innocent again
Out of curiosity when did these two become a couple? Could someone tell me what issue/episode/strip# this happened?

It didn’t, its a joke, Novil is making a joke that a good majority of their fans would love it if these two got together.
As a Patreon supporter, this is offensive. How dare you introduce such shameless pandering, even as a joke, especially on one of the worst anime cliches in existence………….(Just kidding, I love you even more now, and I’ll keep checking this site every day. Yuriyuriyuriyuriyuriyuriyuri hnnnnggggg)

IIRC, it’s also why there’s a Godfather III. Gives new meaning to Michael Corleone’s (in)famous line: “Every time I try to get out they keep pulling me back in!”
Queue Alarm Clock stage left.
This is a thinly veiled rant about Final Fantasy, isn’t it?
@ Jerry:
These references aren’t as much fun if you don’t include the links to TVTropes (which you can do … testing…) to send others into the labyrinth 🙂
@ Jerry:
Which supposedly you can do (I do prefer websites which allow one to edit one’s own comments…) – does this work?
@ maarvarq:
One last try…
@ maarvarq:
OK, you do need a slash at the end of the URL as in the instructions, but you also need text before the left_angle_bracket-slash-a-right_angle_bracket at the end, unlike the instructions.
Some will be pleased. Some will hate. Nothing has ever pleased everyone.
@ maarvarq:
Dammit, beat me to it! xD
Also, I do believe the first panel is the only one taking place in the “real” world and the rest is just Zoey’s Imagine Spot – take note that in panel two onwards Michelle’s demeanour has changed drastically and for each panel she’s escalating the situation:
1. Getting closer.
2. Giving Zoey a kiss on the cheek.
3. Cuddling up to her.

Of course not 🙂 you still ignore my suggestion to SKUB problem to simply force programmers to teach computers to work in analytical continous mode rather than discrete numerical calculations.
Hee hee! And there’s the TAKE THAT at all those shippers who want a neat, quick and totally unrealistic resolution to all character relationships in comics. 🙂
I wonder whether this is a one-shot. Maybe reality isn’t being warped here at all. Maybe Zoey and Michelle went through a completely believable off-screen storyline, which brought them together as a couple? The events of which we’ll soon see in flashback form, and which will completely satisfy us?
…It could happen! I’m allowed to dream, damn it! I don’t care if it makes no sense whatsoever: Zoey deserves some happiness!
@ Novil:
Maybe they are talking about encoding characters in a string of code?
