Serious cuteness overload in the last panel.
- Sandra: Oh, Liz, I’m–
- Larisa: Please, Sandra. Let’s rather do something fun instead of talking about my Wolfram syndrome!
- Larisa: Do you think Woo and Lily would let me play with their kits?
- Sandra: I don’t know. Maybe.
- Larisa: Fire’s really fascinating, huh, Vega? Do you want to see a bigger one?
- Sandra: Please don’t corrupt the youth, Larisa.
- Larisa: Already happened!

Actually, there have been multiple times where superheroes have come up with cures for things that can’t be managed with modern technology. The Hulk, for example, had a story where he was dying of AIDS only to be saved by Reed Richards.
@ Sgt_flyer:
I’ll say it again, the nasal spray was likely a hormone, probably Vassopressin. That’s a common medication used in the treatment of Wolfram Syndrome to replace some pituitary function. It would actually be very surprising if she wasn’t using it, seeing as it’d basically be replacing her renal function.
So, does Larisa think Sandra named them? Because only San knows about Woo’s talking.
Also, Larisa’s pills were probably Tegretol, an antiseizure medication commonly prescribed to WS sufferers. It also reduces nerve pain and has an effect on depression, both of which are common to WS patients.
… I just hope we don’t get to see the worse effects of WS anytime soon.
Larisa’s too endearing of a character to actually see her suffer like that and/or die.
I know deus-ex-machina cures aren’t Novil’s thing, though, so I’m not holding out hope for that. At least… Don’t actually show the degradation going on. I don’t think I could handle that particular drama bomb.
There are two things you can do when you learn your dyin, live what little life you have left to the fullest or fall into a deep depression. I am glad larisa is doing the former.
awww : ( recently started reading this comic and now I’m super sad
Calling all geniuses: Landon, Yuna, EVERYBODY! You now have a mission: Cure Wolfram Syndrome. You have less than 10 years, and your budget is whatever you can beg, borrow, steal, blackmail, trade, or sell from your inventions. Go.
Does Landon even know….so that he could prepare for the worst. Are we going to see the disease in different stages?
While everyone talks about Larisa’s condition, so far very few have asked how did she know the kit’s name. I’m also surprised that Lily has become so tame with Sandra already considering their previous (in comic) encounter.
Wait….what! Seriously! DAAAMMMNNNN Just dropping a bombshell on us like that?
Since Larisa was treating her Wolfram Syndrome as a secret in the warehouse exploration arc, I have to wonder why and how Sandra now seems to know the secret.
I can only guess that either Sandra has always known because she’s Larisa’s best friend (which would explain a lot about how little Sandra reacted to Larisa’s earlier behaviour) or Larisa told her “off-screen” somewhere in between. I think it’s more likely to be the former than the latter.
So perhaps at this point the only people to know about Larisa’s Wolfram Syndrome are Larisa, her parents, Sandra and, probably, Landon (because I can’t see Larisa keeping information that important from her steady boyfriend).
To all those wondering how Larisa knows the kits name: Since Larisa doesn’t know that Woo can speak English, Sandra probably told her that she calls the kits that.
As for why Larisa asked Sandra if Woo and Lily would be ok with her plating with their kits… Larisa is smart enough to figure out that it’s not safe to go and take a racoon kit when the mother is near. She is wondering about Lily’s attitude in regard to humans, and if it’d be safe to go near her kits.
@ Melkior:
Don’t forget when Larisa told Zoey [0528] Larisa’s Big Secret
@ K:
Lily and Sandra have been introduced by Woo.
She knows Sandra is cool.
I’m more surprised at Larisa being allowed near their offspring.
@ Edda:
You might have realised this comic isn’t exatly grounded in reality, what with talking raccoons and the like.
Hopefully, somebody invents the right form of gen-therapy, so she can live to a ripe old age and set fire to the retirement home.
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
@ Aggrax:
If Snappic is the same as Snapchat, the only place the pic has ended up permanently is on their server.
That is, if Larisa has set the proper timer.
@ Konrad:
People should indeed remember rules are made for people, and a 13 year old sending a nude selfie to her boyfriend shouldn’t be kiddie-porn.
Now she’ll probably show him face to face.
if she has wolfram syndrome, wouldnt she already be experiencing loss of colour vision, and blindness? a brief bit of research shows the vast majority of cases with full blindness by age 14. is she just lucky and only has the diabetes portion?
@ Asrial:
Now she’ll probably show him face to face.
I would not be surprised if this is at least part of what Larissa meant by “I can’t wait to give you your REAL birthday present once you’re back!”
@ Hideka Valheim:
Possibly, although the blindness usually stems from diabetic retinopathy, which is bleeding in the back of the retina. She has her diabetes seemingly well under control, which might save her vision for a few more years. Though, she’ll still have a diminished field of view.
She probably already has a certain amount of color blindness. That does happen early and is an important diagnosis factor in girls with WS, as it’s rare for women to have color blindness.
I wonder if her particular eye characteristics in the comic are an indication of any of that. It’s possible, but her design has always had those pupils.
Spikes wrote:
How so? Asking if they’d let her say hi to the kits?
An animal doesn’t have to be sapient to be protective of its offspring, and I’m pretty sure Larisa would rather not agitate a family of raccoons.
If she has color blindness, i wonder how advanced it is – since she can still do nice colored paintings 🙂 – and WFS induced blindness comes from the neurodegenerescense – while she can prevent the diabetic retinopathy by managing her diabetes, there’s not much she can do about the degenerescense of her nerves. (Afterwards, the line is a bit blurred to know how much WFS symptoms are in her – if she already need to prevent muscle seizures and such.)
KillerOh wrote:
I agree. 5 years of waiting for this, and it’s just quickly blurted out and blows over immediately like it wasn’t important at all. Not to mention, originally it was claimed to be a secret, but if her best friend already knows…
At least now we know how The Great Fires (http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2015/05/14/0683-the-great-fires/) started
@ MidoriLuna:
Explains why she wanted her boyfriend to have their First Time while they were NOT teenagers! Explains why she also wants to get pregnant ASAP!
Does Landon know?
OK, I understand Larissa now.
I only hope Seeoahtlahmakaskay doesn’t find out about this. Remember what happened to Prometheus?
@ Mechwarrior:
Superheroes are allowed to do and receive the impossible. They aren’t allowed to give these gifts to the world at large. See, Hulk also had a kid who was his friend, and eventually it was revealed he had AIDS and he died of it. Hulk can be cured from the incurable, but his Joe Schmo friend on the street can’t. It looks like its trivializing the issue, and can be kinda offensive.
WOW! Suddenly Larisa’s character makes a lot more sense! She isn’t simply being a hellion just for the sake of it. She’s going the full-on-afterburner route so she can get the absolute most out of her life, because she know’s it’s gonna be short. Better it be short and sweet.
This also explains why her family pretty much lets her get away with murder – with her prospects being what they are, why be a wet blanket on top of that?
“Sure, sweetie, we can get you that flame thrower. Just make sure that anything you set on fire is going to be something no one will miss.”
I used to think something was wrong with her parents, but now I applaud them.
Of all the things I was thinking Larisa might be dealing with, I have to admit this was not one of them. Mainly because I’ve never heard of it before. Good on her for living life to the fullest. =D
But there one thing I’ll point out. In Larisa’s speech bubble in panel one, the “rather” shouldn’t be there. I’m not sure if anyone’s pointed it out yet, but it’s bugging me.
Oh, and on the other hand, I can totally see Cloud’s little sister rigging up some transhumanist way-out for Larisa.
Don’t deny it – I know she’d go for it. She could totally be a jet fighter! /me waves at Jeph Jacques over at Questionable Content.
Ooooh…
Just looked it up, that’s far more severe than diabetes type 1.
She has to get her living in while she can. Heck the early stages of occular degeneration are probably already setting in.
On the other note, that kit does look thrilled by fire!
There are worse scenarios, knowing there’s a Death Note style timer over your head Would explain her zest for life and kinship with fire. Only two questions remain. How advanced of a state is she in it and how well do those meds she has treat it?
Meanwhile Lily either knows what’s up and approves or Really likes head scratches.
@ Sarusig:
IT’S BEEN SO LONG BUT I REMEMBER NOW!!!! Given I only started this a year or so ago, but still.

So THATS how we got that apoclyptic future Smoky warned us about!
Larissa teaches a racoon to set fires and because it is being protected by a god, nobody dares to stop the little thing from burning down every forest in the world! @_@
@ Cirom:
I think thanks to the blessing that anyone who harms her kits will suffer immeasurably she might.

I hadn’t forgotten and darnit, I intended to include her in the list and then somehow forgot to! O.o
I wonder if the wolfram syndrome already was set in the last comic or if the author just waited for the comments and picked the most fitting/consensus there :D.
Well at least she is safe from ever reaching the age were the more severe impacts would hit her. Since this comic seem to have adopted a similar timescape like i.e. the Peanuts I don’t think we’ll see the characters ageing in any serious amount ever :).
Fun fact. This particular ailment has a funnily confusing name. Wolfram is the scientific name for tungsten. Tungsten has very little to do with the disease other than the name it seems.
Thank you for all of the subtle hints about this before now. They all make me giggle now that I know to look for them.
@MidoriLuna
Now if anybody would read it? ( sarcasm )
I think that was very well laid out.
( nevermind, comment 34 )
AND “Sandra did know!”!!
and “
”
LOL
@Jerry
Hmmmmmm
@Sgt_flyer
I know a few people with color blindness, and from what I understand it varies to a degree. as in they can see that there’s a difference but can’t make out what’s what or they can lot less accurately.
@ Qwertystop:
Sandra told her?
Damn, and i thought i had it hard with my epilepsie. still, Larrisa has kept a positive outlook about it and thats what counts!
Even if her pyromancy take on perverted forms from time to time 😉
@ Jerry:
I have MS, a much, much less devastating disease than Wolfram’s Syndrome. When I was diagnosed, my first neurologist told me I’d be crippled by 60 (and with her skills, she might have made it 30, so I got a new doctor quick!). Knowing how hard it was for those close to me when I was diagnosed, and when other people find out, I can tell you that the way Sandra is reacting is not the way someone would react upon first hearing about a serious disease. She’s definitely reacting more like someone who knows, and has come to terms with it to a certain extent. She reminds me of how my husband is when I have symptoms.
I also connect with Larissa’s “I’ll be blind in 10, dead in 20”, sometimes I feel like saying “I’ll be crippled at 60, so why should I give a damn what you think?”
Fire corrupts; absolute fire corrupts absolutely?
Oh man. I’d never heard of this condition. Guess I missed a few days.
I’m still waiting for the Goldman Sachs Wall Street Bank thing that was spoiled at the beginning of the arc. Also, the black hole in Larissa’s front yard might be an interesting issue.Maybe Yuna can use it for something…
Living her life like a flame. One day, she’ll go out, but until then, she’ll burn bright and happy and free.
@ Gram91:
I think that’s the joke. Either way I agree.
Btw nice avatar.
Somebody has probably asked this already, but does Landon know about Larisa’s Wolfram Syndrome?
… She’s gunna die on panel isn’t she? ;_;
