- Sandra: Don’t worry too much about it, Woo. Everybody forgets something once in a while.
- Woo: But not something like this!
- Sandra: I’m sure our readers will forgive you if you give your very best in the next episode.
- Woo: That won’t help Shadow.
- Woo: It was his only story arc this year. And I ruined it!
- Sandra: Aww, Woo, you’re way too good for this world.
- Woo: I thought I was better than all those slackers who go on a “temporary” hiatus.
Uh oh…
I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
Woo’s ears are adorable in this one. But it’s weird to have such an extended fourth-wall-breaking arc, complete with emotional manipulation.
Not that I’m necessarily complaining, mind you.
Poor Shadow…
I hope I’m wrong, but it feels like Novil is telling us that SW is going on hiatus.
oh dear. if theres a hiatus pls dont be too long at least =(
Ouch. Shadow’s only story arc, and he appears in one panel. Let’s hope Novil revises that!
@Lookfar:
Novil has already stated he’s running out of ideas for S&W. I think it’d be alright if he waited to get more, but it is very, very hard to draw readers back if you have a much-extended hiatus. That is specifically why I stopped reading Unsounded – they announced a multi-month hiatus, and I said forget it, I’m not coming back.
Nothing can help Shadow now… Also, I think this was the hiatus. A nice one, as far as hiatuses… hiati? Just hiatus? Whatever, as far as they go, it was nice.
Simple solution, Shadow v. the Swamp Monster episode. No glory for Woo.
Looks like a warm fire, can I pop down next to you woo?
@ Pony-kour:
I’d think that hiatuses hiate, do they not?
I think the comic is coming to an end, is gonna be the rude awakening. Woo decides to quit, after he lets his fox friend down so bad.
Lucario wrote:
You’re missing out.Two latest chapters were chock-full of character development, plot advancements and awesome moments just on about every page.
@ Lucario:
Really? ‘Cause Unsounded is actually doing pretty good right now.
@ Lucario:
Well, I don’t know when that was, but Unsounded is currently updating. If you’re talking about Ashley’s one month breaks in between chapters, that’s routine for her. She’s showing no signs of stopping and is usually very punctual.
Ouch, low blow there on the hiatus
Aw drats. I hope we’ll see updates on an irregular basis, rather than a hiatus altogether.
I’m an offensive, I find this slacker. (Well, was – I recently tried to pick up on my unfinished writings but it’s not easy with a new job prospective that demands so much preparation.)
So this is what happands when an Artist can’t come up with a new story for a character..
Guess Shadow will return to the shadows.
Q: Is there any reason why Woo can’t go help Shadow with is story arc in the morning? Why does a delay in Shadow’s swamp monster arc mean that it has to be skipped and that it can never happen?
@ Booyahman:
Hiatuses gonna hiate.
I’m sorry but I don’t really get it.
I read S&W regularly and I really don’t understand what this sequence of strips means … maybe it is something that was discussed in a separate forum or on social networks (that I refuse to read) or in comments (that usually I don’t read ) ?
Read his Twitter feed for April 23 guys.
I’m supposed to be the NOOB here, not you!
.
Woo looks so sad. He will have to make up for it.
On Thursday most likely.
@ Lucario:
Another favorite comic of mine had loads of smal Hiati (week or two) and a couple month long ones and when it got down to only being able to post one or two comics per week and every other week another break and on even months nothing at all I decided it wasn’t worth the frustration. SO yeah, a long hiatus would definitely be toxic fo S&W
@ Lucario:
To be fair, Unsounded does that at the end of every major chapter/book. And state when it is going to start up again (and thus far, I don’t think they’ve broken from their target resume dates)
I’ve been in tight spots before because my job’s enforced ridiculous amounts of overtime, thereby nearly eliminating my time to work on my comic, so I think Slacker is the wrong word for that. Hiatuses – for me and most every other comic I follow that has them – are because life punches you in the face, murders your free time and then runs off. You recover sure, and some artists need the break so they don’t burn out.
Then again, plenty of other webcomics never go on hiatus and manage to maintain 1-2 months’ worth of buffers. If I did webcomic’ing for a living I’d have that too (plus better artwork tbh) – but as it is now I’m lucky to get two weeks of updates done ahead of time and I only update twice a week @_@
@ TvTropesgotmehooked:
Perhaps you can link the tweet ion question or point out where on this site it is? Because I don’t see it.
I didn’t realize until now that the “Woo and Shadow vs. The Swamp Monster” thing was a breaking the 4th wall thing, as I was interpreting it all as in-world. I thought they were putting on a play for the woodland creatures, and somehow Sandra knew about this play. Seemed weird considering we never heard of them putting on plays.
@ lokitsu:
I can’t seem to figure out Twitter links on my phone. I don’t have an account and I’m not downloading the app anytime soon. So I’ll copy-paste. 🙂
On April 23 Oliver posted:
“There are webcomics that don’t update for months. And I get yelled at when I post a page one day late…”
Sorry if that was a letdown for anyone. But that was the joke and most of you know that by now.
.
I get the impression that if Novil were to go on a hiatus he would let us know. And if he were to actually decide to end Sandra And Woo it would be with a bang, not a whimper.
I could be wrong, but I got the impression that he would give us a warning first.
If he starts giving out more hints to decode the Book Of Woo that would be a possible red flag for me. It seems like he put great care and thought into it and there will be considerable fanfare when it’s message is decoded. (I hope!)
My final reason why I don’t think he is ready to end this journey? Examine his last post.
@ Novil:
He listed each comic with four digits. 0001 0002…
This could mean nothing at all and just be a habit. But I tend to look deeper into a person’s writing style and choice of words. He is a programmer; everything not commented out affects the end result of a program.and we know that Oliver is a bit of a perfectionist.
That’s just my 2 cents worth. Grain of salt required. Reading since February, the whole archive and skimmed through most of the comments. Joined comments section last week. I got a small laugh out of this strip. If he decides to go on a hiatus, even 3 months, I’d have no problem at all. If that’s what he needs.
@ il biggo:
I lol to that. 🙂
@ Lucario:
I know what you mean. I was a fan of Brainslug, but the dude updates like 4 times a year now -_-
If Novil does need just a little time for ideas, one thing that could be done is to have a week or two where we get one-panel artworks (and Woo-parodies of famous art).
We could always use some more art.
Also, outside of one of the most recent setting-things-on-fire, I notice that Yuna’s invention shenanigans never seem to involve anyone other than her family. There is definitely potential there to have some fun with other characters too.
Somehow, this went unsaid this far, so I might as well: Shots fired!
To be fair, I did see a few comics that came back from hiatus, and began updating regularly (*cough* Miamaska *cough* Homestuck *cough*). But I’ve also seen ones that came back only to reboot the strip.
October the 19th, 2008 was when the first S&W. That’s 8 years running. I love this comic and would love to see it continue… But if we are near the end I wouldn’t be upset. I’d rather it end on a good note then have this great comic ran into the ground. I think “Everybody Loves Raymond” ended early so they wouldn’t ruin the show by running out of ideas. One way or another I’ll be here to see this to end (no matter how far away that is) and I’ll be here to see the beginning of something new (if the artist so desires).
This whole ‘we are actors in a comic strip’ thing does not work for me. If we’re going to go down that road, then nothing in the strip should be taken as ‘real’, including the characters. They are living on sets, ‘Larisa’, ‘Cloud’, ‘Sandra’, ‘Woo, and so forth are not their real names since they are actors, ‘Larisa’ does not have Wolfram’s, the actors playing Cloud and Sandra are not really a thing, etc. It means no drama is truly possible.
@ GnarlyDoug:
On the contrary, it works… I see it as everything being real, but we’re allowed a glimpse into their lives and they know we’re watching, so sometimes they try to put on a good show. Other times, they forget about it and their real lives are more important, but sometimes they have a plan for what kind of show to put on and tonight, they forgot.
The first tag is called “breaking the fourth wall”.
This is gonna be good.
I spent the last too weeks binge reading this comic. So worth it!
@ Nickisbored:
Welcome! I just arrived as well!
.
Okay, no more walls of text by me for awhile. I got my thoughts out!
@ GnarlyDoug:
Almost every story in almost every possible form of fiction breaks the Forth Wall at least once.
Doesn’t bother me.

I will figure out how to link soon. Phone hates copy/paste!
Woo needs a hug!

Hug given
Did you have to use the “You’re way too good for this world” line in that last panel Sandra? My inner Elan (which thankfully is strictly quarantined to the parts of my brain delegated to spotting plot points by my inner Roy Greenhilt) is screaming about how she’s doomed Woo…
Of course I have become plot paranoid as well so that just might be all I’m dealing with.
Pfft any hiatus is shorter than the likes of white noise and f’n ronin galaxy, reds planet too? lol
@ MonsterMakerNo3:
That was cute!
noooooooooooooooo D: I CAUGHT UP! SO SAAAAAAAD!!!!!!!!!!!
There’s a page missing from the ‘breaking the fourth wall’ tags, when Larissa takes an axe to break it in a very literal way.
[0652] Axed Scene.
Oh the delicious irony
And the irony continues…
