@ Max Void:
Haha, nice last line. You made me laugh. 🙂
(I’m kinda still using XP on one computer!)
Some older systems that can’t handle Win10 get lucky, no forced update.
I just voted on Top Webcomics. I want to see it jump a rank!

The long wait for Monday has begun. 🙂

There are reasons to question the use of “burglar”:

No kidding, they pretty much resorted to malware-esque practices already – you can disable that popup but it’ll pretty much just re-enable itself unless you’re very careful, disable Windows Update, or use a third party tool.
For people who actively don’t want Windows 10 (yet) due to, say, driver incompatibility, it’s a lot of hoops to jump through.
Honestly, the stories I hear make me very glad I switched to Linux ages ago.
@ Sapphire225:
I know right?? It’s tried force-downloading it to mine twice now, each time I had to force shut down my laptop to keep it from going through, now it just shows me a message to schedule an upgrade on my dash that I can’t click out of, even when I try deleting the program file that makes it do it, it just reappears immediately
@ Anon:
I’m in the process of buying parts to make a new computer. If it wasn’t for the fact that Linux is not compatible with the setup I’m going to make, I would have switched to Linux. Unfortunately, I have to use Windows.
@ Sapphire225:
that actually happend to a friend of mine.
@ Sapphire225:
Heh, I just turned off Windows update and blacklisted it.
We are using a PC with Win7 at a system control PC at a particle accelerator’s detector when last week suddenly Windows was telling us to reboot within the next 10 minutes with no cancel option…
Luckily we designed our software to not destroy the setup on OS system crashes or reboots, but that also felt like one of these moments…
I will just leave this here.
https://www.grc.com/never10.htm
I updated to Windows 10 on my tower—bought a laptop that had it, and I liked it. I still like it…but I wound up having to buy a whole new tower.
“Here, have a Windows 10 upgrade for free! Even if you don’t want it!”
To be honest, the upgrade to Windows 10 has been the least painful Windows Upgrade I had to date. And, I believe, the only one without data loss.
The only lost functionality I’ve experienced thus far is the terrible window frames. I’d like my old 9x-like theme back, Microsoft.
But other than that, everything else either retained compatibility, or took only a short Google search to fix.
Also, SMB shares on guest account are actually LESS of a pain than what Windows 7 made them back in the day.
Oh, and to those complaining about “Microsoft Spyware”: You only get to make that complaint if you’re using Linux, not if you’re using Windows 7, and definitely not if you’re using Mac.
And if you ARE using Linux, then you shouldn’t be concerned about an automatic update applied to Windows computers only.
Also, don’t forget that even if you disable the upgrade, you’ll just suffer more pain once your current system hits EOL, and no longer supports the software and games you want to use or play.
Oh my God this is so “relatable” LMAO
I turned off my PC when the impossible to cancel win10 upgrade popped up, and then on the following day I found out the Hard Drive had died.
Next time, I’ll download Never10…
Hmph. Not impressed. Microsoft has nothing on Disney and their tactics. There’s a reason Snowden only released US government information, if he had released Disney info you think he would have made it to Russia? You think he would have released Disney info, even? The truth is, Disne
@ AzyWng:
There’s nothing bad about 10 inherently, but just as an example: Windows 10 has some performance issues with games. As a gamer, it’s not in my best interest to upgrade. My PC is also ~4 years old a bit specialized. I’m worried that Windows 10 may mass with my RAID and such. As such, I don’t really want it forced onto my PC and it could really break things.
GIVE IN PUNY MORTALS! IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME! HA! HA! HA!
LOVE THIS!!!
Also I remember falling asleep during a Smash 4 stream and when I woke up the blasted laptop had Win10. Same thing happened to my mom when she passed out watching Netflix.
Good thing WIn10 is basically Win8.2 cuz I would’ve been pissed.
@ Mortar:
Considering even a basic Walmart external hard drive costs over $100, and the “upgrade” is basically sneaking onto computers, it’s really not as big a PEBCAK as you’re making it out to be. Then there’s the fact that, even id external hard drives weren’t expensive and online backup didn’t cost money, failing to back up the old OS data doesn’t magically make Microsoft trying to force Windows 10 on everybody right.
Win 10 so screwed up my previous computer that I went out and bought a Mac. Not the best solution but at least it keeps me from having to be eternally watchful for Win 10 malware.
Eh, the closest Windows 10 comes to my hardware is running in a VM on my Windows 8. Wich I only still have because I am too lazy to downgrade to 7 already.
When somebody asks me about wich OS will be the next XP (long lived windows) my answer is:
75% Windows 7
12.5% Windows 10
12.5% something like Linux
Vista and 8.1 can be continue to run for the time being. But new ones should be 7.
Of course with Windows 10 they are in a unique position go get over all the flaws, thanks to much more seamless versioning.
As with many things of MS: The idea and reasoning was sound. The implementation abysmal.

I see what you did right there! Well played, sir.
I am platform agnostic myself, having to work on machines with various OSes. They all have issues of one sort or another, but with the initial announcement of Win10 and the good reports from the field, I was hoping that MS would be improving on its previous wretched record. Stuff like this, though, reminds me of why I have to keep my Win7 SP1 machine disconnected from the Internet at all times forever no matter what.
I am a big believer in “use what works for you”. What works for me for most day to day stuff is a fairly customized build of BSD Unix with probably too much attention paid to its UI bling….

Oh, so you want these guys to die a slow, lingering, painful death.
If you guys are unhappy with a free upgrade of Windows I’ll suggest you try one of the alternatives…

…or if you also need new hardware: http://www.apple.com/
@ Sapphire225:
Bad news for you. Windows 10 is already on your computer, all 6 GB of it. It just prompts you to install it, although I’ve heard of one case where it supposedly installed itself.
All versions of Windows since Win95B have back doors installed on them so that Big Brother can spy on you, but Windows 10 takes the cake with all the built-in spyware. I never recommend it, due to all the technical issues people have complained about after installing it.
This was hilarious because immediately before viewing this my computer told me it had scheduled an update on its own, which i then cancelled.
OK funny, AS someone running 10 and with a good deal of time with older versions you can disable most telemetry monitoring if ya look around
@ Sapphire225:
it did try with me, it did it to my brother with an unscheduled update. fortunately I was able to stop it from doing it
I don’t get it, everyone is saying that the Win10 update is so pushy, but I have literally never seen a single one and I’m running Win7… Is it because it’s an OEM version, maybe?
Top kek
XD That’s really funny!
I installed Windows 10 once they told me and did not have too many problems. Didn’t know about the spy stuff though, I’ll have to disable that.
The old desktop at my parents house is hooked up to a printer we’ve have for ages and once I upgraded it was impossible for me to hook up my laptop to it. So I have told my siblings to avoid upgrading for now. But if it is as pushy as you say, then I’m a bit worried since none of them know how to deal with that sort of thing. And something tells me the printer isn’t the only thing that will stop working.
I get the jokes about Windows 10 forced updates, but i don’t see the problem here.
If you don’t like it so much just uninstall it, and install back the old Win 7 or 8.1? That’s what I have been doing anyway.
I’ve seen quite a bit about these wind. 10 updates reeking havoc across the U.S.A. I think that might be why I found this to be gold. That and I always had a little joke where the IRS would act like the mafia whenever someone wasn’t paying there taxes. To the point that the real mafia was scared of the IRS. It reminded me of my little joke.
Today, my laptop forced me to download Windows 10. this is really relatable.
Time to get comfy.
Haha. Nice username, g Linux:
@ Sapphire225:
yes, that it’s, again. It’s been snuck on 3 of my machines so far, the monitor stopped working on an XP Pro, because they kept trying to turn on the camera…. the monitor was to old to have a camera. Almost tossed the monitor befire the next monitor had a problem and it was discovered WIn 10 was loaded even though I’d opted out repeatedly, seriously, it takes newer and better hardware then my machines have, and IT WILL NOT RUN THE PROGRAMS I NEED TO USE.
How can they sell us something unless they break it first? How about old time quality, morals and ethics, provide services we’re dying to have instead of stuff that hides anything we’d found useful in the past.
All Win 7 machines begin to stop working well when they loaded it in an unlabeled update. Seriously, if they are that insistent we run their newest best spyware, I think it will cost me less in the long run to learn Linux.
@ Francisco:
Dual hard drive/OS’s in my new machine, XP Pro that runs all the programs I must use, and Linus to get online.
@ Francisco:
Yes, legalized terror delivers. What’s on your machine is not yours, it’s theirs, don’t give it up they’ll make your life terrible.
I still have my grandfather’s slide rule. Just in case.
Just upgrade to Ubuntu Linux already and forget corporate greed and insecurities.
Scott wrote:
That’s exactly what I’m going to do on my older machines in a week or so! I used to make fun of Linux but now realize how smart it is to have full control of one’s machine.
I also used to make fun of Apple because it’s annoying as hell that they put ‘I’ in front of everything, but at least they don’t force everyone’s device to upgrade all at once! Also, their video software seems great. If I were an artist that’s the only reason I would buy a machine.
@ Lookfar:
Lol, that’s awesome. I seriously want one of those old ‘adding machines’ that use vacuum-tubes. 😀
@ lookiemookie:
You CAN refuse, but it takes a bit of work – https://www.grc.com/never10.htm Download and run – it will tell MS to NEVER upgrade and gives you an easy way to delete the (average) 6.5 Gigabytes of preload upgrade data files.
If your system is flat out too old, or you have to keep using an old multimedia or Dongle attached program that insists on Win7 or XP and they can’t upgrade the program (often because the company is gone) you have to keep the old machine on the old OS.
@ Heather Trails:
If their compatibility checker determines there’s no way you can do the upgrade, it won’t offer it. BUT they keep checking for updated drivers and work-arounds… Laptops are a huge problem, because they do a lot of cheats with the motherboards and BIOS to keep the chip count low.
And if they figure out a solution for your system it will start downloading the 6.5 GB of files overnight, and then start pestering you.
IDK how this is meant to be funny. This is how my laptop got the update, my sister’s friend arrived right then and it turned real awkward. She thought she’d walked in on some collective cross-family BDSM session.
No means no, Microsoft.
@ Sapphire225:
I think I upgraded to win 10 about a year or two ago, just see what the hype was, the first thing I did was uninstal the CRapps (the apps I didn’t need, as in ALL OF THEM). Shut the system down to see my Ex. Started the system up next day, and the first thing win 10 did was to reinstall all the crapp.
Rolled back to win 7, ended up with a system running rrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyy slow (almost like Microsoft think that by dumping enough crap on system to slow it down I’ll upgrade to the faster win 10)
not really just nuked the boot drive and reinstall win 7
That’s how you know this is a work of fiction:
Microsoft people can get Windows 10 up and running.
@ Scott:
I’ve been on both Linux and Ubuntu’s websites. They don’t have the hardware drivers for the setup I’m creating (or for this laptop).
