They were laughing when Donald Trump promised…
… to make anime real.
So, who’s laughing now?! Checkmate, liberals!
I don’t understand why they made the ad so depressing. I think that it’s a neat concept which should not only appeal to workaholics/otaku/hikikomori without a social life if done right. It should be more like a virtual friend instead of a wife replacement. And there need to be mods to load the appearance and the personality of your favorite characters.
I’d get a virtual Kurisu Makise with whom I could talk about quantum physics in a heartbeat. Of course I’d have to make sure that she doesn’t see my computer monitor or she’d call me a “pervert” all the time. *g*
If you go to their website, they’re saying that they will be making more avatars of all kinds, in the future. I have a feeling they’re going for the most desperate base for now, to make money for later development. If they can’t sell these to lonely single guys, then they have no hope of making enough development money for other avatars. If they can get voice recognition for other than Japanese, too, that will help sell it.
Fortunately I speak Japanese…
🙂
Having played Steins Gate 0, let me tell you, a digital Kurisu causes way, way worse problems than seeing your screen. Way worse.
Gotta say, I was expecting something somewhat different from the headline.
Wonder if we’ll get these in the states. It’d probably come pre-installed with a Trump avatar with lifesized hands.
Oh, god, I just pictured Trump in a maid outfit. Thanks, Novil.
@ MidoriLuna:
That should cure you from that thing called sleep for quite some time…
But can it make coffee? Because the first thing I thought just from the thumbnail is that it looks a bit like a coffee machine.
Jokes aside, I’m not sure what to think of this. The technology itself is cool and I could see it being really useful as a kind of personal assistant to help with things if you want, but using it as an alternative to an actual relationship the way it shows in the ad just seems a bit sad/creepy to me.

Glergh! Thanks for that bit of nightmare fuel… D:<
You know in some ways this might be the evolution of a pet. I mean it is like a dog in that it is there for you and offers you comfort and reassurance. It is not a bad idea for people who live in apartments and who are not able to have or take care of an animal. Of course it can never replace real human interaction but it might be useful to help people with extreme anxiety and other social disorders. I have a good friend who is a Psychologist at USC. I will discuses possibly using them with him after the holidays.
All I could think of is having one with Sesshoumrau. XD
“On my way home!”
“Whatever, peasant.”
“10 minutes!”
“How dare you keep me waiting. You’re dead.”

Let’s face it. It will be hacked and used to create virtual ponies.

Can’t not see Dr.Kreiger from Archer LOL
Could be my personal emperor Palpatine…
I’d love to have one of those as an avatar for my icinga monitoring system.
Rommie announcing “The Magog just punctured your mail server” would just hit it.
I doubt they’ll be available in other languages soon. Japanese is way way easier for voice recognition than other languages like english (or german).
I like the development. Maybe I simply like technology.
Not so much depressing as the work life of a Japanese salaryman. They work long hours and much of their social life is drinking with the office staff. Add, the second fastest aging population and a flat lined economy for a couple of decades.
The concept is neat, but the functionality shown is relatively simple and if that’s all.. i think it will become boring really soon.
I wonder how deep it can theoretically interact with smarthouse facilities and network connection. Turning on and off light is fine, but could it check if the fridge is almost empty and order some food? Or could it check if one of your favorite webcomics was updated? How about checking if one of your relatives have a birthday next week and ordering him a present online, or at least setting up a remainder? Or maybe connecting to another local gateboxes to organize a district-size flashmob?
US version should definitely include a Pintsize avatar with a dedicated few terabytes HDD for NSFW content.
Quantum Physics… It took me like 2 years to actually understand it… (And I mean on university level, because my major was Physics)…
Who would want to live with someone you couldn’t touch? That thing is pathetic and so is the poor soul who owns it.
…..small holo display can it display crysis? ^_~
This kind of tech could have so many video game-related applications…

@ 1oldbear:
Eh I’m looking at it like a interface for something like Amazon’s “Alexa”. It’s not like virtual assistants haven’t been shown for years in Sci-Fi settings, but the tech had to have started somewhere.
Ok, i knew something like this would come some day(more than eneugh manga and anime about the subject) but somehow it does’t sit right with me, i mean, i’m single to, but i would’t want some anime figure in a box as roommate even if someone gave it to me for free.
Then again, the Asian Otakus bring the word “exstreme” to greater heights then nerds here in the west and are known for their anti-social behavior, so for some it might be an answer, or make it all even worse..
We’ll have to wait and see.
-whispers aggresively- ANGELIC LAYER BETTER BE NEXT, I WANNA FIGHT CUTE CUSTOMIZABLE ANIMU CHARACTERS IN A HOLOGRAPHIC ARENA
Hurm…does it come with the option to make your OCs as the avatar? Cuz, y’know, that’ll be awesome!
Having binge-watched “Her,” “Ex Machina” and “Artificial Intelligence,” all of which have nothing ultimately good to say about the technology, I think I’ll keep living my life old school.
It bugs me a lot that these Japanese images infantilize women, though I suppose it’s unavoidable that certain types would want them depicted that way, even here in the States.
My take on the tech isn’t so much as wife replacement, but rather as a virtual companion for elderly people. Especially a person with dementia might find such a technology helpful, as they can keep reminding a person with memory problems about their daily routine, about recent events, and monitor their health at the same time.
It would be neat to have as a virtual companion (be waifu or friend), though as someone mentioned earlier, options would be nice.
I, for one, would love to have either a Megumin (KonoSuba), or Manako (MonMusu)
@ shazz_smifff: …You just had to make it worse for some of us. Welp, you owe me a new bottle of bleach…
@ Rock:
Could be worse, think of Hillary or Obama in a French maid’s outfit.

I prefer infinitely to live alone and occasionally accompanied by a real woman than living with that thing. The Japanese are going extinct.
