Now use that mallet on the ignorant asshole!
Well, Sandra is no Cloud. But next strip is probably Cloud trying this and breaking the hammer, or something like that. 🙂

How is he ignorant? He accurately called Sandra out for trying to fuel her strike with rage.
Anyway, Sandra can always try to improve her technique, this could be done by, for example, not being full of rage. I doubt she has the strength to get a great score even if she had a perfect technique though.
Crystalgate wrote:
“Chinese cartoons”? He’s clearly a parody of one of those redneck types.
Well yeah, imagining doggie get hit by a lady isn’t enough… You need to be on the level of Matilda at least, if you want that to work…
@ Xezlec:
Chinese cartoons is pretty much a common joke at this point. People who know will use the expression. It’s not a random joke (though it might be here).
If I were that guy, id be more careful around a girl with a mallet, wimp level strength or not, lease she shift her aim about half a metre to the left, and .7 metres higher.
Oh who am I kidding, Sandra’s more of a gunner/summoner class anyway, give her a sphere accelerator and let her summon a raccoon and she’ll kick any jerks ass.
Rigged!!!
…Not to mention that Sandra was probably handicapped by using the mallet provided. If she had pulled her own mallet out from hammerspace and used that, she would have been assured of a better result. >:=)>

Something tells me that Larisa would be good at this game…

@ Crystalgate:
The point is that he shouldn’t make fun of her… or anyone for that matter.
@ Bizkit:
He’s a carnie. That’s his whole job.
And then Woo jumps on the button?
Next page, Cloud hits the target so hard, the bell at the top is knocked off and hits the jerk on the head.
Larissa would just pull out her flame thrower. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nZQZya7nA8
@ Bizkit:
It’s his job to get people riled up so they’ll get angry, spend more money and try to prove him wrong. Nothing personal, just business.
*Boop.
*Expert mode engaged.
*Bell sent into orbit.
@ Bizkit:
That has nothing to do with him being ignorant. Note that I questioned the word ignorant, not asshole.
@ Crystalgate:
This guy seems ignorant, though, because he assumed that she watches “Chinese cartoons”.
It’s pretty clear that he’s referring to Japanese anime. As a fan, myself, I think calling it that is very ignorant – even rather insulting.
As Jim pointed out, their job is to try to get “people riled up so they’ll get angry, spend more money…” They’re both laughing at her performance. Perhaps he said that just to get a rise out of her. But it’s also very possible for people to be that ignorant.
Ooh big man laughing at the upper body strength of a tween. They are surely comfortable in their masculinity, which won’t shatter at the slightest provocation at all
To be fair…actually, she just got above ‘toddler’ and that IS embarrassing.
I’m quite sure real anger can help one let go of inhibitions, and thus hit stronger, but certainly not by a lot.
Cloud walks forward, lightly steps on it.
“DING prizeprizeprize”
@ Crystalgate:
“Chinese Cartoon” the tag is anime and manga, i am plain sad i had to point it out for you.
@ Mechwarrior:
aah, that sounds beautiful, just sound of it is pleasure.
Those things don’t work on force anyway. You have to hit them with LEVERAGE.
This guy must be crazy, picking on overachiever’s girlfriend without any plot armor.

I bet Cloud knows about Leverage. Maybe a 30 second tutorial would…
Next is a 10 Weeks long training arc, where some creepy old guy let’s her diliver milk on an remote island
She…she didn’t even reach the level of “Wimp” at her best…that’s…
Something tells me that if Cloud tried it, the bell would be launched into the stratosphere.
Jim R wrote:
Exactly. Nothing personal, it’s just business.
She’s a young, teenage girl, and not conspicuously into sports. She can’t expect to hit the bell just by concentrating, grunting a lot, and going into super-Sayan mode.
Plus, her technique was all wrong.
Crystalgate wrote:
Her technique was not that bad as far as we can see – wide overhead swing, fast strike from above, throwing her body forward, too, to gain speed use gravity, her problem is short arms and lack of strength, not technique. And while Cloud certainly would do better, he shouldn’t really ace that, he is trained but he is still a kid, he may be an almost professional kung fu fighter, but speed and fighting technique don’t help you at high strike, it is a 90% pure strength test.
Ima go all South Park and call “shenanigans!”

She’d have more leverage if her grip was closer to the end of the handle and both feet were on the ground. Body strength counts, but good technique makes it a lot easier.
May I direct the attention of the congregation assembled to the expressions on the faces of Cloud and Woo in the last panel? I sense a foreshadowing in the Schwartz.
Typeminer wrote:
As in sports like baseball or tennis, or swinging an axe, it’s all in the wrists. This maximizes the speed (and hence the momentum) of the meat of the bludgeoning device at impact.
and now Cloud, who will probably blast it trough the top end of the chart.
From what I understand, the carny hammer game is rigged to be very much less about strength and more technique. You have to hit it directly on the top, else most of the energy moves the button cover around instead of the actual one underneath. Control is so much more important that visualizing someone kicking puppies is counter-productive.
Next time you level, take a dip in Barbarian, Sandra. ^_^ That’ll do it.
I think it’s rather mean for Cloud to be smiling at her misfortune. The others can say what they like, but Cloud should be at least concerned or supportive…
He must be talking about Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf. Funny Chinese cartoon.
@ 1oldbear:
She sold that for luna.

That was going to be my guess too. 🙂
I’ve actually used these things – and if it isn’t an electronic one or rigged, the system’s pretty interesting. You need to hit it on the edge closest to you, thus applying the most force on your side of the pivot, which makes the ringer go higher. If you hit square on the target, you’re closer to the middle of the fulcrum, and it isn’t going to go as high.
The first time I ever used one, I rung the bell three times. 😀 Two years later when I came back, the woman just handed me the prize. I still paid for the ‘ring the bell’, but I didn’t have to go through with it. 😀
[SGA]
It’s all about technique and accuracy. you want to start near the head and end with your hands at the bottom of the handle. that gets you your acceleration. You should aim to have the top 2/3 of the head strike the plate right down the centerline
I’m an 11 year old boy and I just read the entire series this night/morning
Christopher LaHaise wrote:
I was quite happy with hitting the bell at my son’s school faire, until the next dad came along, and they had to take the thing down and fix it. (He lodged the traveling piece under the ringer.) Still, not too bad for a 58 year old desk jockey. Wood splitting technique helped.

Who will have the next try? Cloud or Woo?

True, anger and hatred are usually much more efficient in pumping chemicals into body that may momentarily allow it to exert peak performace not avaiable regulary.
Now would be a good time for Woo’s expert mode…
