- Sandra: You don’t spend a lot of time with your kits…
- Woo: You think? I’m rather surprised that Lily lets me stick around at all.
- Woo: Usually, female raccoons even chase away the fathers who do show an interest in their kits.
- Lily: We’re kinda stupid this way.
- Canopus: Mom, come quick!!
- Arcturus: MOMMY! M-O-M-M-Y!!
- Sirius: WHAAH!!
- Vega: The tiger devours the helpless prey!

Yes, well, but usually interested fathers would be interested in killing the male offspring, wouldn’t they?
I sense a callback to the first Calvin and Hobbes comic 😀
@ Rock:
Aren’t males interesting in killing other male’s offspring rather than their own offspring, male or female?
@ kazunori:
OMFG you’re right! Kudos to Novil for this reference to a true classic and to you for noticing it!

Well, in that case Lily would be fine, she agreed with Woo to only have kits with him.
It would appear the only one helping out Lily is Vega!
Yay, talking kits!
You still about over two years left before they’re ready to leave.
I can only tell wich one is Vega, because the others dont have their “signature” behavior… Plus Vega is the only one who inherited Lily’s brighter mask color.

And possibly the females if they were feeling a mite peckish. But I don’t expect this cartoon to get into that little corner of raccoon behavior.

@ Senok13:
well, the one Vega is cannibalizing upon (Sirius) has black feet, unlike all the other kits.
it was also earlier stated that Arcturus has a black dot on his forehead, making him the one facing away from Lily.
this leaves the last one to be revealed as Canopus!
Was Woo playing with a yarn ball? I see a yarn ball on the bed in front of him.
Just too funny for words. Thanks for the late evening chuckle

The black dot was added by Woo, using a marker. That was the joke in that strip. I see no reason to believe it’s still there. Arcturus and Canopus are probably indistinguishable in the artwork as drawn.
In fact, A more recent strip (not tagged with Arcturus) does not show a dot, confirming my suspicions. http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2016/02/22/0763-buyers-remorse/
Oh never mind it is tagged with Arcturus, I just messed up. But it still confirms my statement that there’s no dot anymore.
I hear immitation is the greatest form of flattery.
How unfortunate that Lily didn’t at least get a sandwich out of her ordeal like I did.
Lily is a brave mother, taking care of all her children alone.

A quick Googling showed me no information of this. Raccoons do engage in infanticide, but I saw no information about males targeting their own male offspring. Can you give me a link?
As for competition, the idea with mating is to pass on your genes, and your own offspring will do so for you, male or female. In average, your children, when they get a child, passes on half as many of your genes as you do when you get a child. This means that a male raccoon’s male offspring needs a 50%+ chance of robbing their father of a mating in order for it to pay off killing them. This strikes me as unlikely.

But why isn’t the reference tagged?
@ Commentary Ver.2.72:
I think it is more satisfying to realize a reference oneself rather than have it blatantly revealed in the tags. Is definitely a balancing act for an author or artist.
And now I’m on an archive binge for a comic that started in 1985; please send help. 😉

Calvin and Hobbes reference! Good one!
@ Crystalgate:
some times… infanticide is done for a number of different reasons. sometime there is not enough food to feed all the kids. sometimes it is because its another male’s kids, sometimes a better mate came along, other times we just dont know why they did it.
