It’s a chess joke.
Is this a reference to the way Cloud’s parents play with my little pony toys?
If Nightmare Moon can’t rule Equestria, then she’ll take Northia by hoof or by crook!
@ OriginalName:Sandra is the ‘queen’. The my little pony doll can be considered the ‘knight’. look at where Sandra is standing on the tiles relative to the doll. You’ll notice that this is where, in chess, a knight can attack a queen, but a queen cannot attack a knight.
@ thefinalstarman:
I had assumed that sandra was a ‘king’ and princess luna was a ‘queen’, and in chess a king can’t advance forward into a board placement that would result in being put into ‘check’. Which if allowed, would be a fatal mistake.
I’m looking at the “princess luna” tag. This should be good. 🙂
Well played, Novil 🙂
Knights are represented by their mount in chess, hence the horse shape. Princess Luna here is a horse, hence can represent a Knight in a standard game of chess. The floor is chequered, and our Queen Sandra is in captive range of our Knight if we go by placement on the ‘board’ relative to each other. Hence Sandra is under threat of being ‘killed’ by Luna. Captain Obvious out.
Didn’t get it till I saw the Chess tag and noticed the floor. Knight takes Queen.
@ athroughzdude:
Ah, yes. Queenguard.
Subtle… very much so…
Mate? (Gulp!)
,,,you’ll shit bricks.
Princess Luna is queen of the (k)night.
Yeah, it went screaming over the top of mine. Any help?
@ thefinalstarman:
Gracias. I was too hung up on the horse to notice the floor or link it to the ‘queen’ comment.
I expected some joke about Queen Elizabeth.
So I guess Woo is a bishop. I never knew he was religious.
More like Woo is a pawn.
Woo is a raccoon. 😛
…as long as it doesn’t drop anything ON my head as it passes!
Heh. It’d been a while since this comic got me to chuckle out loud.
Ah. I understand the chess references now! When I first looked at the comic, I’d thought about the crecent on the pony’s flank and the writer being German. What with Sandra being a wonderfully strong, intelligent girl (I’ve
@ OriginalName:
It’s a Chess joke. Look at the floor panels. She’s two up, one across from the Pony(Horse/Knight). The Knight always moves in an L shape, either 1 step in one direction and 2 in another or 2 then 1. She’s under attack…

Thanks, captain obvious!
Oh.. That’s why it said “Deepfog”..
I wouldn’t have gotten the joke without seeing the tags or the comments.
If this strip makes it to the book, I wonder how many people will get it without having to look it up online.
Everyone’s talking about how Luna represents the Knight (or night), but interestingly enough, there’s an alternative chess piece called a Princess. Its moveset is a combination of a BIshop’s and a Knight’s, and is generally denoted as (KB)!
Here’s the wiki article for Princesses in chess.
OMG. Novil, that one is GREAT. Totally took me by surprise.
Check it over carefully, mate.
My little pony the sign of the beast
In part it’s a chess joke, count the tiles.
Princess Luna is the best Princess.
Always has been.
Even if she wasn’t night themed, and I wasn’t a nyctophile, she’d still be the best Princess. She doubles the fun!
Also, as many people have pointed out already, it’s a chess joke. Knight (horsey) takes Queen.
@ dzamie:
No, it is denoted as ‘NB’, as a kNight is denoted ‘N’, to avoid confusion with the king ‘K’.
KB would be a so-called ‘Dragon Horse’, a promoted bishop in Shogi that can move as king or bishop.
“…What? Wait… is it because… no… dang, I should get this one… a horse, killing a queen oooOOOH THERE IT IS!” …Followed by a minute of slow clapping. Is she invisible to them, or an inanimate model, or what?

As a non chess person, thank You!
No connection, really, but the first thing that came to my mind was a joke from something*positive
http://somethingpositive.net/sp05282008.shtml
Nightmare moon and chess?
Well played.
Will Northia get a new ruler or will the Queen be able to move forward?
Ponies! =D
As mentioned earlier, Luna could be a Princess (as she is obviously a princess) chess piece, or maybe also a Nightrider/Unicorn/(K)nightmare. (Since she is night themed and an alicorn which includes unicorn in a way)
As she was Nightmare Moon before, this might also be a fitting chess piece for her to be. They move like normal knights but can go further, so the joke would still stand. 🙂
Oh nose! Sandra is about to be mooned!
Joke is funnier and deeper still. Luna is both a horse (knight) AND a princess (queen). That means Sandra is in checkmate.

Ok… but is there a fairy chess variant with a Raccoon piece? And what can IT do… sneak?
My first thought was Famine pony, one of the ponies of the Apawcalype from the current storyline in the Devilbear webcomic. 🙂
So Sandra is shown stepping into to square which indicates her turn is over and immediately gets a sense of her own death. Then we see Nightmare “I am the night” Moon AKA Princess Luna at a knights move away from Sandra.
I think I broke something laughing. Nice visual gag!
Discovered check is always a beautiful thing
For those not familiar with the My Little Pony franchise, Princess Luna is the “Princess of the Night” in the show, so not only can she be considered the part of a knight in chess (being a pony/horse which usually representships that piece) making it a chess joke, but she also represents the (k)Night in the My Little Pony show, making for an amazing double-pun (and probably the reason she was chosen over any other pony).
